The Supermarine Spitfire, preferably Mk. IX. Very rarely does an aircraft get such an incredible combination of history, design excellence and sheer good looks all together. And she still makes people stop in the street and look...

Second choice... hmm... theres a lot I could choose, but to actually travel in, I'd go for a hot air balloon. I don't really think theres any other kind of flying experience quite like it...

My number one choice about 5 years ago was

F-16 Fighting Falcon

Now I would have to say

F-22 Raptor, or the F-35 (don't know the name) w/ VTOL.

I still love the old F-16 though.

Oh, and for Prop driven... The P-51 Mustang hands down. ;)

Gee, Snoopy's Doghouse, is a favorite of mine. Damn...I used to have a toy of it, and you just reminded me of it for the first time in decades. Now I probably have to go hunt for it on eBay.

Out of real-world airplanes, my fave is probably the F-4 Phantom. Because:

1) When I was quite a little kid, my parents bought me an F-4J model kit. I think it was at the Goddard visitor center in Maryland. I never properly finished the kit, but I enjoyed looking at the picture and fitting the parts together.

2) It looks cool and mean. I never understand why so many people think the F-4 is ugly. To me, it's the first American jet fighter that looks "right". With the exception of the F-86, most everything before it looks antique (e.g., the original Phantom I, Banshee), funky (Demon), or corny (century series, Corsair).

3) Although it had flaws as a dogfighter, it was a jet that did everything for much of the Cold War, as an interceptor/air superiority fighter/tactical bomber, serving with distinction in war and peace with the USAF, USN (and Marines), and many allies including Britain, Germany, Japan, and Israel. It was the only plane that was used by both the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds. It was in US service from 1961-1995 (the last decade or so in the Wild Weasel role), and remains in service with other nations.

I don't really have a second favorite--I like a lot of other planes. Maybe the Hornet simply because I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of Graphic Simulations' Hornet flight simulators.

The Su-27IB / Su-32 / Su-34 ( Int'l Air Power Review says -32, Modern Russian Air Power says -34)

It has the capabilities of a full blown strike fighter. It has equal air combat abilities to that of the Flanker, and can outdo the F-15E in the strike role....

And it manages to do that in an aircraft with a lavatory, a galley, a bed for sleeping, a cockpit big enough to stand up in, and side-by-side seats with automatic massage functions! :D

The L-39 Trainer / Light Fighter

It's a bit of an odd choice, but I've always liked this aircraft. If I were to buy any available aircraft for my personal use, it'd be one of these. They are good looking, well engineered, and have room for two. They have very stable flying characteristics, but also manage to be surprisingly agile. It still remains, after years, one of my favorite Flight Simulator aircraft.

Mikoyan i Gureyvich MiG-25/31

Why? Two huge former cruismissile engines strapped to an airframe...

Lavochkin La-5FN and or La-7

Worlds fastest prop back in the day next to the MiG-3. The La-7 managed to have the first Prop vs. Jet kill against an Me-262. Plus, they just look brutal... mmm radial.

Honorable Mention:

Sukhoi S-37/Su-47

Why not? :D

Vostok 7

P-47. Most people like the sleek lines of the P-51, but for a flying milkbottle, the P-47 was one beutiful airplane.

F-5E Tiger II I have always thought this was one of the coolest look airplanes ever built.

most of the same reasons for me except for #1.

i mean, the F-4 was the only fighter at the time (and still is today) able to mount two Vulcans in it (or in Gunpods, whichever u want) so it had more firepower than most planes had except for the AC-130 and AC-47.

the Skyraider would've saw action in WW2 had it lasted a couple more years, and the O-10 was one of the best planes for the Observer role and the calling in air support role whilist in the air.

The OV-10 also has the advantage of being able to carry ordinace of its own (4x .30 cals and various rockets) as well as 5 trooper. It could also be converted into a flying ambulance. Very cool if you ask me.

Most 2 favorite aircraft? Man, that is hard. I have a huge freaking list. Well, I need to narrow it down.

F-14 TOMCAT -That is the absolutely my most fav fighter. It was designed as the fleet defender and it has offensive capabilities nicknaming it the "Bombcat" as well. :D The Phoenix missiles can shoot anything down in 100 miles. I believe that the valks are based on it. So I hope.

Now I have to figure to which other aircraft...

  • a. A-10 Warthog - if you need a tank division destroyed absolutely overnight, this is the baby to do it with. B)
    b. F-117 Nighthawk - if you to need sneak in to destroy the AA defense at night so you can use the A-10 to destroy the tank division, this bad boy does the job. ;)
    c. B-2 Spirit - need to lob a nuke or the MOAB and you want to make sure they never know or see it coming, this is the one!
    d. F-22 Raptor - gotta protect the A-10s, F-117s and Spirits from enemy fighters. :o
    e. AV-8B Harrier II - If you are in the Royal Navy or USMC, this sucker is your best friend when you go on the amphibious assault.
    f. AH-64D Longbow - you want to ambush em, this be it.
    g. F-4U Corsair - Greatest all around fighter and CAS during the Pacific Campaign in WW2.
    h. B-17 - Bombed the crap outta the Nazis and their manufacturing capabilites.
    i. Spitfire - finest brit fighter in WW2. It was essential in the defense of Battle of Britain.

I forgot one more... the AC130U Spectre Gunship... 2 words: can you "Airmobile Firebase"? :D

The 25 is an undeniably cool plane, but it has problems. The leading edge and nosecone have to be replaced after every top speed flight. But, have you heard the stories about Iraq's 25s in the Ffirst Gulf War? They proved themselves against US aircraft. There's a thread on the LO:MAC forums with info, I'll dig it up.

some facts on the foxbat

not bad for a dud old bird

somtimes speed does win lol

Gulf War Experience -

Did you know that a MiG-25PD recorded the only Iraqi air-to-air kill of the Gulf War? It dropped an F-18C on the first night of the war--then went on to fire another missile at an A-6 and buzz an A-7, all while avoiding escorting F-14s and F-15s

An isolated incident? How about the single Iraqi Foxbat-E that eluded eight sweeping F-15s then tangled with two EF-111As, firing three missiles at the Ravens and chasing them off station. Unfortunately, the Ravens were supporting an F-15E strike, and the EF-111's retreat led to the loss of one of the Strike Eagles to a SAM. Oh BTW, the Foxbat easily avoided interception and returned safely to base

There's more. When F-15 pilots were fighting for the chance to fly sweeps east of Baghdad late in the war, itching for a chance to get a shot at an Iraqi running for Iran, they weren't expecting the fight that a pair of Foxbats put up. Two Foxbats approached a pair of F-15s, fired missiles before the Eagles could get off shots (the missiles were evaded by the Eagles), then outran those two Eagles, four Sparrows and two Sidewinders fired back at them. Two more Eagles maneuvered to cut the Foxbat's off from their base (four more Eagles tried, but were unable to effect an intercept), and four more Sparrows were expended in vain trying to drop the Foxbats

The Iraqis had a total of twelve MiG-25PDs at the beginning of the war, of which maybe half were operational at any given time. Imagine what trouble they would have caused if there had been more. The Foxbats, when well flown, proved capable of engaging allied fighters and avoiding them at will. Only the limitations of their weapons proved a problem.

My favorite non fighter would have to be the Lockheed SR-71 Spy plane. I love the design of this aircraft and it was hella fast. I remember the first time I got to sit in this plane at a Navy base. That will be one of those wonderful things i'll never forget

My favorite Fight is a toss up inbetween the F-22 It's the best of the best in it's class.

Or the classic F-14 comcat. Can't not love this plane.

For those wondering, the forums Cmd McBride mentions in the above post are at http://www.lo-mac.com/

Interesting anecdote--I wonder how much is true! Hm. At least some is corroborated. Lots of reports that Speicher was the pilot of the Hornet downed by a MiG-25.

Oh, hey, you're on the LO:MAC Forums? What's your SN? I think you may have replied to my thread way back, at least someone made a Macross remark in reference to my Shin Kudou handle.
