Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
Off the topic a bit, but I'm curious... is anyone else having issues with the random image link thumbnails lately? They look like they're loaded on the forum, but then they link me to some other hosting site, and never load. Anyway, yeah, calling the HCM bad is like insulting the chunky monkey 1/55ths. Times change, valks got better. Well mostly.. this one just confuses me, but oh well. Still would be enjoyable to build I'm sure, I just don't feel like doing all the work to fix the things that bug me. -
I don't know if the lineart actually directly shows it, but it pretty much has to. The viewscreens under his feet in the cockpit are what he's looking through for battroid mode, just like the later VF-19s.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann

I wouldn't bet on them making any fancy variant designs, but it'd be nice if they tried. A VF-1D might not be much of a stretch, but I don't know how good the VT-1's packs will look with Bandai's wonky new proportions. Really, that's another thing I just can't get.. why did they feel that they had to entirely change the design of the leg packs? Could they not design a knee joint that'll bend far enough to accomodate the original design with the boxy fuel tank behind the leg? -
Oh, absolutely, but I mean I wonder if they'll try to work it in anyway. I can think of a couple of ways to make it work, but it would make the canopy connection fragile, and overcomplicated. It'd have to be a similar mechanism to the v.1, where you have the canopy attached to a separate structure that plugs in ahead of the instrument panel. Big difference is, you'd have to attach the canopy hinge to the peak of an arch shape, and have a second flap that could open to let the pilot out in battroid mode. It would be a mess. What's interesting about this one though.. they can't use the same cockpit rotation mechanism as the VF-19, unless they rework the rotation so the canopy doesn't have to open, or find some way to have both the front and rear halves of the canopy pop up together. I can't actually remember off the top of my head, but I don't think the VF-19 battroid mode fits together correctly if the cockpit isn't rotated. Considering the lack of a hatch behind the head on the YF-19 though, I wouldn't be all that disappointed if they didn't make the cockpit rotate at all. It would certainly let them simplify the entire mechanism in the nose.

Hehe.. I'm really looking forward to the purchasing of a 3d printer, once I decide on a particular type (that UP! 2 is looking good for the moment, but they're getting better/cheaper all the time). I've got a long history of custom designs I made for use in various games over the years, and I'm looking forward to fleshing them out as actual models. That ship actually reminds me of one of Kawamori's sketches for the VFX design set, the one that resembled one of the old NASA lifting body designs.

There's also the fact that that shot is reflecting a big blue planet. After all the trouble the tinting on the VF-1s gave theme, I doubt they'd revisit that to any great extent (though the 30th VF-1J seems to have a tinted canopy? Not sure about that one). I wouldn't be surprised if they rework the YF-19 to use a similar battroid cockpit gimmick to the one on the VF-19s, but as far as I know, that's not accurate, since the YF-19 didn't have that hatch behind the head, it had a bank of thrusters for use in Gerwalk. I really only want the Macross Plus YF-19, but having optional stickers for SMS markings might be a fun thing to include. Thing is, there's no way those packs would ever work in anything but fighter mode. Option parts will probably be similar to the VF-19s: neck cover, thigh covers, etc. I'm not sure if the shield will be as important for this one since I don't recall the shape changing significantly between fighter and battroid, but they might need a replacement to handle holding the gunpod/extra magazines, or to relocate the shield on the center of the arm.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
Exactly. Just because you didn't invent something doesn't give you an excuse not to build on what other people have already been doing for years. It's like they keep their design engineers locked away, sequester them off in some bunker so they don't learn of what other companies have already done (better). Just because it took Yamato two tries to get it doesn't mean Bandai gets a pass for a generation. You have to learn from your competition if you expect to stay competitive. It's a working design, sure.. but I don't see why they felt the need to completely redesign so many things that already worked, and sometimes worked better. See, for stuff like the knees and even the tail hinges.. I just don't get it. I cannot wrap my mind around the logic that lead to their designs. Like, what thought process would lead to the decision that they were the best option? They're not just inaccurate, and less functional than other pre-existing designs.. they're ugly. -
Technically though, that's accurate. The tails were only ever supposed to fold directly to the side. The sliding mechanism was just to get them out of the way of the feet on the v.1. I'm guessing whatever new ankle design they're using makes it so that isn't necessary anymore. As far as the purple canopy goes, remember, the VF-19 cad images had those too. It's just a software coloring.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
Not to mention the panel lines to nowhere that need to be filled or rescribed. I dunno. I think it'll look good, but there are so many design choices that I just can't comprehend. Doing something different, I get.. but so many changes didn't need to be made to the design, and they come off looking worse. And why the blue blazes did they need to make those retracting leg panels for such tiny arms? -

Actually, I'm curious. I don't see how that pilot figure could possibly work without glue. Is it confirmed to not need it, or is there going to be some point where it says, "Oh, sorry, yeah, this part needs to be glued together" ? -

Looks like it'd be a fun build, but eh. Just seems funny to me they can think up such amazing little features as the leg and waist system, then at the same time make such bad looking knees and fast packs. You know the sad thing though.. what I think bugs me the most of anything? The tail hinges look terrible. The rest of the weirdness can kind of be hidden in fighter mode for the most part, but could they really not come up with a better design for a tail hinge than a big dark gray ABS clip? Could they at least have molded it in white? -
It's been gone over at length multiple times in various threads; they have either manufacturing or design defects that make them act nothing like an actual ball. An actual spherical joint shouldn't have a point where it gets tighter or looser, and forcing the joint to where you think it should move to winds up stretching it out so when you return it to center, there's no tension anymore. One of my Fire Valks has had the feet stretched out so I can do a good gerwalk pose, but returning the feet to center lets them spin around like a propeller. Maybe it was improved at some point, since I've pretty much kept mine in fighter mode since the first couple of transformations. I only know that pushing the ankles back to get a good balanced gerwalk pose can loosen the ankles to the point that battroid mode can't stand up (without re-tightening the ankles somehow). I agree, having a working ball joint would be a decent improvement over the ratchets. Hopefully they can improve what they've already done for this YF-19. Either way, it won't stop me from buying. Just would be nice if they figured out how to fix the ankles so they don't do that this time.

Oh, it's been so long since I saw ID4, I actually thought one of the characters were named that, but I knew it wasn't Smith, and O'Neill really doesn't sound Jewish...

Wait. I'm thinking about this now, and I'm lost.... who was col. Oneil? Smith's character was capt. Hiller. I kinda wish they would base a movie off of the sequel book that was written, but meh. Too long after the fact now I think, and the book's setting was nothing like the current situation in the middle east... kinda wouldn't fit in current times.

I wouldn't count on double joined elbows, at least not anything different than the VF-19s already have. The way the arms transform would make it pretty difficult to add a double joint. I hope they do come up with a better ankle design, but I'll be buying it either way. Been waiting a long time for this one.

I thought he got promoted to general before he finally left SG-1? Seriously though, I'm tempted to think a mashup where they patched ID4 into the Stargate universe could actually work... and now I'm imagining all the ID4 characters replaced by SG-1, and I'm sad, because it won't happen.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
I do like how he ditched the included markings, and painted them on himself. It does look good when it's done well, but I don't think the leg mechanism in gerwalk and panel lines will look good without some significant reworking. -
All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!
Chronocidal replied to Keith's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
You know. The more I think about that game, the more I worry I will disappear into my computer room for years to make all sorts of custom content. Looking over the features... it's designed to support mods and local hosted multiplayer from the start, but I'm having a series of moments going "oh, whoa, we could do that" with every science fiction universe I know of. The ships are already built with moving parts, and a mix of thruster-based motion and standard science-fiction "airplanes in space" physics. I'm just drooling at the thought of building a dedicated Macross universe mod server. I don't know how much ground action there is, but the possibilities for all kinds of custom servers made for various science fiction universes is mind-boggling.- 6890 replies

Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
Chronocidal replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
Should have mine tomorrow afternoon, it's gotta go through that dumb cycle of arriving at my post office, trying to deliver when I'm not home and leaving a note, then telling me I can pick it up the day after. Is there some way I could just tell the post office to hold everything until I pick it up, since I'm never home when they're actually delivering? Short of getting a PO box, I mean.- 516 replies

The video source confirmed my suspicions. Plus, there's a good hint in the company they mention. I can't wait for this game. That is just too beautiful to put into words. My only concern now is that it looks so amazing, I wonder how the final product will ever measure up to people's expectations. Given the way games work in recent times, it's hard to fathom someone sticking to a formula from something like 15 years ago. It's been so long since I saw anything that allows local hosting and custom server mods, I'm worried it won't happen.- 6890 replies

Only way they're going to be able to do the wings sweeping back is if they use the sliding pivot detailed in the master file, which isn't a bad idea if they can pull it off without weakening the wing structure and attachment. Even if you did manage to embed them in the legs, the wings would slice directly through the shoulder mechanism if they folded like the animation showed. As far as being an aeronautical brick though, if you're going fast enough, wings don't matter that much. The underside of the plane is smooth enough that you'd probably get plenty of lift off the body, similar to how an F-14 or F-15 aren't supposed to actually need wings to stay in the air. I hope they just include the fast packs from the start, like they did with the first YF-21 release. There's really not enough material there to justify a separate release. They're much smaller than the VF-17 packs, and have no actual gimmicks to speak of that I remember.
-
I kinda feel bad for them with all this nonsense going on. I almost hope they add a partial pre-payment, or even full up front payment for pre-orders from now on. They'll probably see the amount of cancellations they get drop to near nothing. Actually, I wonder how they'd make out better.. selling their allotment and any others then can pick up with up-front payment from people who will actually buy them, or making a small profit on the ones they buy up from other stores when their shipment runs out?

Got mine delivered yesterday, funny, I think this is the best fitting and most carefully painted one out of all of them.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
I think a lot of the trashing just came from trying to wedge another VF-1 toy into the market that was significantly smaller, but not significantly cheaper. Due to the size of the Yamato VF-1 production runs, and Bandai's unwillingness to do the same, the Hi-Metal was never attractive to me when it was so easy to get the Yamato version. Due to frequent sales, and the scarcity of the Hi-Metal, the 1/60ths were generally much easier to get, and usually quite a bit cheaper. If the new 30th anniversary 1/60 VF-1 from Arcadia is any indication though, that might become a non-issue, and the Hi-Metal might turn out to be much more profitable in the current market. I don't think the Hi-Metal was a bad idea.. it was just a bad idea at the time, because Yamato was basically undercutting them by overproducing the 1/60th version. If this kit gets enough demand, I wonder if Bandai might actually pursue a 1/72 line of toys. Some people would love those to go along with standard model scales, and it looks like Arcadia still has the license for 1/60, so maybe there's an opening for Bandai to step up with a new scale. I'm all VF-1'd out personally, but I'd jump on some transforming kits of other VFs.
