Ok, that actually looks almost airworthy. I'd love to see someone work out a full transformation from that shape.

Having bought a few of the VF-4 kits, I can't honestly say the detailing is bad at all, but the shape was a bit awkward, having been flattened vertically in terms of the angles of the wings and tails. What I do wish they would do is stop posting isometric views of their CAD models, because that is a terrible way to advertise. It distorts the shape horribly in almost every way, making the model look misshapen from the get-go.

Oh, I'm talking about the specific color breakdown for Mirage's version, since you know the base colors will be a smattering of white and purple. Will have to see someone build this one specifically to see what I'm thinking of.
-
Nice.. I want to see the parts breakdown on the 262, because I might buy several of them, and kitbash them with the existing kits for some fun color options.

Funny to think about.. this is the exact same trouble my original release Yamato YF-19 had. The arm assembly and design just weren't any good, and I believe that was during Yamato's "explodium" phase, the one where they kept churning out parts in this strange fragile plastic that would fail catastrophically. The plastic in the VF-19s was certainly much better, but the design of the arm really didn't change any.

I can definitely get why transformers fans (or robot fans in general) don't really like it, and I agree, the paint job on it looks lousy. I picked one up anyway, because it's a transforming F-14, and I'm more attracted to that than any of the other faults push me away. I'm already deciding how to strip it down and repaint it, because the default grime really is ugly.- 17117 replies

No actual knowledge of the processes involved, but if you think maintenance on land-based stealth aircraft is complicated, just imagine how difficult it is to keep up that process on a carrier, in a salt-water environment. -

Arcadia 1/60 VF-4A ‘Flashback 2012’ Premium Finish & Regular Release
Chronocidal replied to no3Ljm's topic in Toys
Seriously... wish they would just pick one definition of "premium finish" and stick with it. I get that they have to up their game to make it look worthwhile compared with Bandai's overzealous tampo splatter fest, but I was just fine with them sticking to just the markings, because I think factory weathering of any sort just tends to look lousy.- 1113 replies

They might be working current shipping into the total, because the additional charges there are not something you can really just shrug off at this point.- 17117 replies

See, on the one hand, yes, there is a lot they could learn, but on the other, I think the problem is that they are fully committed to making transforming figures that resemble the characters in the cartoon. They're working backwards from robot to jet, and don't have the freedom to innovate around a design that compliments both. Or, they're not taking the freedom.. they tried with MP-3, and while I think that's the best-looking Starscream ever made, all I ever seem to read on transformers-focused sites is criticism over not following the character design.- 9275 replies

Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII
Chronocidal replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah, much like the F-22A revised and refined the awkwardness of the YF-22, that F-32 design would have been a lot easier to stomach than the guppy. I don't think the intake on that concept art would have ever been sufficient though. Also, depending on who you talk to, the JSF program did lead to multiple aircraft. -

Ok.. I'm impressed, that thing is a whole lot cleaner underneath than I ever expected. I might need to order one. I think what's the most hilarious is how utterly VF-1-esque the transformation appears to be.- 17117 replies

The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
Chronocidal replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Just got my Nicee delivered, and while the tolerances are pretty tight, it's really impressively engineered. Also, after the plain brown box my oversized Greenscream came in, the packaging is impressively done. I might need to go toss out an order for their not-windblade soon. I think the part that surprised me the most was how smoothly it rolls. There's not a lot of clearance underneath, but even with all of the individual wheel axles on individually aligned hinges, everything locks together to produce a freely-rolling car.- 9275 replies

I believe they are shipping via ECMS, which can be tracked on their own site. I got my Kakizaki and Legioss order from them not long ago, and while the shipping did take a little while, it got here safe and sound. Tracking can be found here: https://consignee.ecmsglobal.com/brige/showtracking

Just got an interesting email from HLJ, and I'm not sure if it will solve anything yet, but it looks like standard shipping channels are slowly opening up. ] From the sound of it, we might be limited by item value to use that method, but it's a start.

Yeah, the prices are actually obnoxious, which makes the small size that much more painful. Comparatively, I can go pick up Bandai 1/144 Star Wars kits for single digit dollar amounts.

On the bright side.. maybe I'll have a chance at grabbing an original MP-3 when people start unloading their collections? I still love that one, and never got the original, just the Wal-Mart Skywarp when I saw him on a shelf by chance one day.- 17117 replies

See.. I'm just baffled. Can you even call it gaslighting if the people doing it are unaware of how ridiculous what they are saying sounds, and genuinely believe it? All the comments I see are just people who seem genuinely enthusiastic about this being a huge improvement over the older versions, and are simultaneously trashing the MP-3/11 molds left and right.. which I am just learning to read as "I don't give a damn about the jet, I just want a cool cartoon robot!" There's really no discussion about the jet at all, and the few critical comments are just buried under waves and waves of praise for the bot mode. So... It really all just goes back to Takara knowing their audience, I suppose. The jet is beyond fugly at any angle except directly above, but that doesn't matter, because no one's going to display it that way. They don't want a jet, they want Starscream, the character from the cartoon in physical form. Him having an alternate mode is just a footnote to their intention to display him in all kinds of iconic poses with other robots that just happen to turn into various vehicles, but will never be displayed that way either. Me.. I'm not attached to characters, I just like things that transform, because it's fascinating seeing something unfold into something else. That's pretty much spoiled for me when half of the "something else" is just hanging off of the "something" to begin with. It's my own fault for being too picky, really, but in the end it's just money saved for me.. that will probably end up spent on Macross stuff instead.- 17117 replies

That was mostly me, I suppose. I don't usually read much over there either, but this is one of those crossover events where I was curious to read what the members think. I guess I'm not calling them out so much as commenting on the differences in how the two communities view the product. It's just very strange for me to see that picture, and then read as the conversation is almost completely dominated by how perfect the robot is, how great it is to have extra heads, what the accessories are, how the paint is too bright, etc. Note that I'm not talking about the whole thread, just the last ten or so pages since that pic was posted. I know there was a little discussion of the gut earlier, but it seems to have just died out in the flood of people discussing everything else. The only person I saw directly pointing out the giant belly tumor in alt mode in that photo was actually someone else from this board. It's like everyone on that board has given the tapdancing elephant in the room a free pass, just so long as he wears pants that don't clash with the furniture. Frankly.. I'm a little envious. I wish I could look past that mess of a jet, and just enjoy the robot, because it really does look like a very nice figure.- 17117 replies

I'm guessing it's 1/144 again? Why can't people just make models big enough to see on a shelf?

I guess someone just decided that Starscream was being left out, being the only airplane transformer without a giant box of robot parts under him. In other news, Takara realized that one of the chairs in their corporate headquarters had a broken armrest. The situation is now resolved, as they hired someone to break all of the other chairs to match. I'm actually not sure what bothers me more though.. the giant box of robo-chest, or all of the people on TFW falling all over themselves in love with this. Like.. I guess I'm happy that they're happy? At least it seems like Takara knows their target audience well... I guess now I just know that I'm probably not a part of it.- 17117 replies
