    Interesting. Is it just me, or is the announcer on that video pronouncing the name of the planet wrong? (turning a short vowel (the eh in heh) into a long vowel (the ee in heel).

    When it comes to "the classics", Japan looks to the Chinese ones, not the Greek/Roman ones. Let's sidestep the issue of religion in modern society and just say that it isn't very prevalent in everyday transactions, and just leave it at: one shouldn't expect the general person in Japan to have any familiarity with Latin. I blame Asterix.

    Dude. You guys complain about translations, and then complain about translators trying to be as accurate as possible when translating. Is there anything you guys don't complain about?

    You mean this: "フランス語では Gaule（ゴール）"? The translation of that is: "It is Gaule (ゴール) in French". Are you using a machine translator? Some important things are missing from your translation. As for the disambiguation page (this one, right? https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B4%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AB ) It's only the place name (地名) for ゴール that links back, and even then, it says that the (modern?) French place name is Gaule, and the English name is Gaul. Going back to the first paragraph, it says "the exact pronunciation of the classical Latin [Gallia] is ガッリア." Which puts a lot of weight on the side of the MF production team not using the phonetic reading, but the literal, or historical meaning of the name. There's nothing wrong with that bias. Classical Latin has its merits (above all else, it's not a currently spoken language. Making it extremely stable and unchanging). However, as a translator, I have to always keep in mind that I'm translating Japanese to English (not Zentraadi or a different language). And even though Gallia is a possible translation of ガリア, its meaning in English isn't as well known as the more common Gaul.

    This is harder to respond to - in the sense that it takes more time to explain. I think the shortest explanation would be: many Japanese automatically assume that all borrowed words come from English. Most don't bother fact checking (ie: it's in Roman letters = it must be English). The flip side is that there are also some English speaking Macross fans that automatically assume that if it's written in romaji, then it must be English, and don't bother fact checking (ie: making the assumption that Megazone 23 is 'correctly' read as two-three, based solely on the Japanese audio, while not considering that although many Japanese have studied English in school, many have forgotten (or never properly learned!) that the teens and tens (20, 30, etc) have a different reading). Should it be Gallia 4 based on a Bandai release? The only way to answer that is to answer: should we expect the graphic designers at Bandai to have an appropriate understanding of English in order to use English on their products? The only answers to that are ones that aren't clear cut.

    It all starts to make more sense if one considers that they prefer to be using domestic technology and manufacturers, rather than relying on foreign technology and manufacturers. That preference started with the rug being pulled out from under their feet with the F-22, when the US refused all overseas sales of it.

    That movie, probably more so than most others, is one where the viewer should just go to the flow. There's no real need to waste energy on deep thoughts.

    My impressions are that it is intended to be a stealthy F-15 replacement. As they couldn't buy the F-22, a lot of the features of that fighter are emulated in the X-2 'Shinshin'.

    It's backwards. It says "human size". That size (30 m) appears to come from the movie version. You're reference images appear to come from the TV version. You could say that one is accurate, and the other is in error. Or they're both accurate to themselves. I'd recommend going with what looks closest, but doesn't break the bank when you make it.

    I don't get some of the complaints that are being made at these things. They're not premium grade kits. They cost the same as a Big Mac (just the burger, not the set). For what you pay, you get something that is nice and cleanly molded, with a surprising amount of detail - for those people who like to spend the time masking, painting, and adding washes. The stickers are there for the people who don't have the skills/supplies, or can't be bothered with painting/washes. Aside from the models themselves, I really like the stands that come with them - the pivot on them allows for some dynamic positioning (posing quite doesn't sound right) when on display (a step above the VF-25/29 sets released for the MF movies). And the stands come with a plug in the back for the cover of the plug in the underside of the kit. Handy! But they are molded in colour. The VF-31 is two-tone.

    If memory serves, the 19A thru E are pretty close to the YF-19. The 19F and onwards were reworked. However, the craft that was truly made pilot friendly was the 19EF (from MtR).

    I think it's a little bit more complicated than adding a clear canopy. Two factors to take into account are: 1) additional molding (or molding complexity) because of the inclusion of a cockpit and pilot figure 2) they want to stick to a low price point, which inhibits additional gimmicks like clear canopies, because... - short version: people have less money to spend, and products cost more to produce. - long version: Japan is experiencing a money crunch because of the so-called Abenomics (akin to Reaganomics and the trickle-down theory - with the big companies getting richer, and employee incomes not rising) coupled with an increased consumption tax rate (meaning real income value is dropping), along with imports getting more expensive (at the very least, they need petroleum products for both the plastics, and the national power plants are using more overseas fuels). So... you could always try to swap over a clear canopy and cockpit from one of the 1/144 Bandai Macross 7 kits from '95.

    What about the VF-2? 3? 5? Or even the VF-16? Some of those have been mentioned, but aside from foot notes about being competing fighters or engines being used in other VFs, that's all we know.

    Makes me glad that I... stop following the latest releases back in 1999. Preserved my childhood. In all seriousness, from that time, I started doing PBP Macross RPing in the Palladium system. It's been liberating being able to tinker with game stats and tweak the rules, while avoiding all the melodrama from the production side.

    Tried a few episodes of BSG, didn't like it. I think it's too much of a stretch to say that BSG is the best sci-fi series. DS9 on the other hand, was very good. The first time through. I started a rewatch a few years ago and... stalled out in the 2nd season. SG-1 has high rewatch value. Sure, it's not as heavy on sci-fi navel meditations as those other series, but perhaps the tone of not taking itself too seriously is what makes it one of the better sci-fi shows? Which puts it up there with Red Dwarf, eh (similar tone et al). ... which brings me pause. Star Wars has a similar, relaxed sci-fi tone. Rogue One, by all appearances, is charting for a more serious tone. Will Rogue One be the diamond in the rough? Or will it get mired in melodrama and become the pariah of the Star Wars movies?

    I think the problem stems from the current design school mentality of thinking that there needs to be more detail on the screen, simply because screens (TV in particular) can display more detail. TOS aside, one quote I remember about the design process of DS9 went something along the lines of "I want someone outside the room, looking in through the window to see it, and instantly now that our show is on". The end result was something simple, elegant, detailed, but also visually distinct. Which I believe are some ideas that the current movie robot designers are lacking in their visual design vocabulary. I agree that Kawamori-san also seems to have compromised his Valkyrie designs when he started going down the road of making completely accurate designs (in the sense that there is no anime magic to get the parts to fit together), starting from the SV-51 in Macross Zero.

    Probably still using the VF-24, as well as the VF-25/27/29/30/31, but with perfect grade ISC.
