  1. First time. The closest we ever got was the VF-17 Fighter/Battroid comb set for Macross 7 - which just isn't the same!
  2. Well, I'm happy that we're getting a VF-171. It's a shame that they're going to be out of scale for the VF-25/VF-29 non-transformable fighter kits.
  3. I think it's too early to say that. Who's to say that someone (Arnold) won't come to him with an idea on how to make a lot of money off of the franchise? Personally, I think a Terminator movie directed by Cameron won't be happening at all, unless the Avatar sequels really tank.
  4. The Monster is the only one who's mission role hasn't been largely replaced by Valkyries in-universe (not depunking or disputing the manufacturing/deployment cost discussion with this post). Out of universe, the Monster is probably the only Destroid that everyone really remembers, especially among non-fans! (Ie: Masamune Shirow mentions it in one of his art books).
  5. That's all true, but it's missing my point: the producers are still occasionally giving us brief glimpses of ground forces - and even the ship-based Destroids count, being walkers and all that.
  6. JB0, those are good points. I think it's fairly safe to say that we haven't seen what constitutes ground forces in Macross - simply because the focus is always on the Valkyries, and the stories never get around to making space to tell the story of the ground forces. We do have a few hints here and there (E.g. the Humvee like vehicles in M+), but as long as the story tellers don't feel a need to develop that side of the universe (like they did in SDFM), what we've got so far is more or less what we're going to continue getting. All that said, some of the games based on Macross do flesh things out a bit. Like the hover tanks in VF-X, the Destroids still in use in M+ Game Edition and VF-X2, or the new Destroid design* in Remember Me. One of the common traits among those games (other than reusing existing designs) is the presence of Zentraadi Mobile Weapons (mecha). Which begs the question: to what extent are the ground forces composed of Zentraadi troops and their equipment? * SDR-04 Mk.XV Maverick: http://www.mahq.net/mecha/macross/rememberme/sdr-04.htm
  7. I humbly disagree. I've had kids at my school (Japanese) get sucked into the classic Disney animated films - despite the language barrier (only English) - whereas the same kids (and my own!) are not as interested in the more recent Disney films/Japanese anime. Though everyone, myself included when I was their age, disliked having to sit through the opening credits. But I do agree that it all depends on the content of the story and the viewer (referring tangentially to the first episode of Macross Delta here).
  8. I think Ebert's mentioning of it is worth mentioning: "It's not merely bad; it's unpleasant in a hostile way." And my favourite line from that review: "The director, Roger Christian, has learned from better films that directors sometimes tilt their cameras, but he has not learned why."
  9. Interesting. Alas, one question answered, a new one forms (what does the "literature" position entail...).
  10. I can't say about Macross Delta, but Macross 30 was written by Kodachi Ukyou. A lot of the mythological references in MtR and M30 are due to him. A few months ago I asked the question if Mr. Ukyou was also involved with Delta, but so far I haven't got an answer on that (if so, it would explain a lot of the references).
  11. Ah, yes. Remembered why I wanted to post the timeline linky in the first place (apros for the double post): New Era 0001 - Macross's answer to Gundam's UC; and something that was promptly forgotten by the creative people behind Macross. http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/Stats/Statistics/Sourcebook/Timeline2012.php#Megaroad
  12. About a week ago, I wanted to post the link to the Macross Timeline that I've cobbled together over the years in a conversation somewhere on MW and... out of the hundreds of pages my current host is making available, it is one of the few that doesn't get displayed. Well, after ripping the timeline apart into separate pages, and extensive debugging, I've found the reason why. The current host does not like the word "proxy" (used in describing the purpose of the Zentraadi). Talk about wisdom-tooth-getting-pulled level of GAH! So... here's the working linky to the Timeline: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/Stats/Statistics/Sourcebook/Timeline2009.php The positive side of this is that the Timeline is getting a well-deserved polishing up and refinement. And the smaller portion sizes (of HTML) should make it much easier to plop down events as they start to spew forth from Macross Delta. Gah!
  13. Hmm... pion harassing pion? Nevertheless, I'm GLAD that the OT did NOT have combat droids. The Battle Droids totally deflate any tension in Eps. 2 & 3!
  14. http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/Stats/Statistics/Cheyenne/CheyenneII.php The picture at the top of the page has a pair of screen grabs from the series in action on the Macross Quarter. Note that they are in the 'armoured booths' that also first appeared in M0 on the Asuka II. They also pop up out of the handheld Macross Cannon when the Quarter uses it in a Daedalus Attack near the end of the series.
  15. If memory serves - he saw both, but only individually, never together. As both types of droids are a dime a dozen, Vader probably never gave them no mind. Which makes sense, as all the droids in the OT are passive agents. That, of course, leads into one of my major gripes about Eps.III: the writing goes so out of character that even R2-D2 violates Asimov's 3 laws of robotics. Something that all droids more or less follow in the OT (yes, there's that bounty hunter droid. But he isn't shown violating the laws ). So, continuing in the bad writing of the PT vein, it's arguable that even though Vader saw R2, he didn't recognize him, because R2 wasn't flying about, burning people to death.
  16. {Apologies if I've missed something in the conversation preceding this post} Didn't they start returning to that in MF on the Macross Quarter? Come to think of it... the last two (pre-Delta) Macross anime had it (Zero and F)! It'll be interesting to see if the trend continues in Delta - what with both elements already present (a Macross Quarter class and the Cheyenne II).
  17. I don't think that they will - it's a background mecha that fills all of the roles of the Destroids in SDFM (sans the Monster, but we all know what that turned into ). Nevertheless, I like that they appeared - as their design makes more sense for urban warfare, and it is one of the ques that this new series is a Macross series.
  18. Interesting. I've always interpreted that depiction to being akin to the WWII allies at Remembrance Day ceremonies, wearing their historical military colours. Never really thought about it in the context of what little is presented in concurrent and subsequent Macross stories. Due to Kawamori san's interpretation of the Macross official setting (each series is true, like a WWII reenactment is true), I think the most relevant context would be how they appear in Macross 7 (being that it was created in the same time period as M+). And in that series, we got an all-Zentraadi fleet (civilian and military). So... I wish Kawamori-san would fill-in a bit more of the 'great blank period' between DYRL and M+... (the games have done an admirable job, but a lot of things come up short).
  19. Okay. I never did follow Animage (they generally don't do any mechanical coverage at all), so any lamenting above has to be taken with a grain of salt, as it was in the context of Newtype.
  20. ?? How did this bomb get set off? I make an observation that the article is providing a less than comprehensive presentation of the new series, especially when compared to past articles in Newtype (if it even comes from Newtype), and not only do I get my head chewed off, but statements I never proffered are being attributed to me. Nevertheless, a further question to the OP: were there any other pages in the article? Or just the ones scanned?
  21. Yes and no. One of the pillars of Macross has been the mechanical side. It's the lack of emphasis in this marketing campaign (from Newtype?) that saddens me.
  22. It's possible that they just decided that Fold Quartz is common, and easily available (or inversely - because both sides are using elite squadrons, they people behind the scenes have put the best materials available into their equipment).
  23. Was that scan taken from Newtype? Makes me sad... as the focus is almost entirely on the characters, and the Valkyrie is mere window dressing in the background. [For comparison: the Newtype articles on MF did have a paragraph here and there on the Valkyries]
  24. Way back when, before Hollywood realized that sequels are a real cash cow, movie props were pretty much put out in the trash - it's comparable to when US auto manufacturers realized that there was just as big, if not a bigger market in replacement parts, and their cars turned to carp in the '70's. I remember hearing directors/prop master complaints about it in the filming of Back To The Future 2 (about 1), and 2010 (about 2001 - though, as Kubrick went to the extreme of burning pretty much everything but what made it into the final print, the props involved with his movies were probably deliberately destroyed, as opposed to the standard practice fate of the props in other movies). Having said that, there are some props that were rented out and made the rounds in various movies in that pre-sequel era.
