  1. Watching pivotal works outside the time they caused the pivot will, understandably, diminish their returns. It's not just about your age at the time you viewed them, it's also about how things changed after they came. Star Wars is a great example. It was mimicked and studied and the whole genre morphed because of it to the point where, coming in brand new, you might easily find it inferior to many of the films that benefitted from its existence. Of course, there is also something to be said for being in the target demographic when you consume the content.
  2. Unless something is breaking on their artist proof for the marketing photos, there won't be any changes between this and the production version.
  3. The whole domestic violence rapey subplot could probably use some tweaking... Someone in Hollywood had the same thought and gave us Stealth.
  4. I got mine en route also. Yay!
  5. It wasn't just that Dr. Yueh was above suspicion, they got rid of the suspicion element all together in the movie. Maybe some of the 'wow look how much water there is on Caladan' scenes could have been better used.
  6. It'll be interesting to see how the show is without the theme song invoking heavy nostalgia every second along the way. Cowboy Bebop had such a cool universe to operate within though so I'm hopeful. Curious if there will be something live action brings to it or if it feels like moving away from animation only hurts it.
  7. I bet the Emperor's family will be Asian. Ken Watanabe? Lots of good possibilities for Irulan also. I like the Joffrey idea for Feyd.
  8. What does this actually improve?
  9. That is gorgeous! nicely done. Hadn't seen that before... and it will now be forever associated with that pose in my mind.
  10. I read the original three Dune novels and couldn't take any more after that. My wife is a huge Dune fan, she encouraged me to read the later books, said they have a more modern structure and flow to them. I was too burnt out to go down that road though. There's only so much hemming and hawing over prophecies that I can take. The funny thing about Frank Herbert's writing is that the character's thoughts are what move the plot forward and there's plenty of exposition through dialog... it's almost as if he was writing to intentionally make the story ill-suited for film or television.
  11. So true! The soundtrack felt more like a wall of noise more often than not... like someone slamming their hand on the deeper notes of the keyboard whenever drama needed to be reinforced. Also noticed this... to the point it was distracting a couple times. "Shouldn't the heat be totally oppressive here?" Speaking of all the political intrigue that's missing and the failure to fully understand the motivations of the characters because of that, it really seems like they should have gone the trilogy route and ended the first filme with Leto's false tooth. The second film would be Paul's ascension to the backdrop of Beast's tyranny. Then the final film would be the big showdown and the beginning of the jihad. Maybe the real end game here should be an HBO series in the vein of Game of Thrones.
  12. It feels like there's a few "why" questions missing to me. The emperor kicks the Harkonnens off Arrakis because he fears how respected the Atreides have become and that they can somehow challenge him. I don't really get HOW anyone challenges the emperor though. Arrakis is a trap, the Atreides go there and are easily ambushed. What was the false pretense that was used to remove the Harkonnens? Did the Emperor tell the other families that the Harkonnens were doing a bad job so they lost their most-favored family status? Then, when the Harkonnens retake Arrakis, what story would be told then? If the emperor gave Arrakis to the Atreides, then wouldn't they need his blessing to retake it? The movie mentions that spice production is down and the Atreides want Kynes to go to bat for them and make the case to the emperor that the Harknonnens left them in a lurch but there didn't feel like enough connection between those scenes and the return of the Harkonnens. It feels like we needed another exposition bomb speech from the Baron where he laid out that the lack of spice production would allow him to step back in and retake the planet without furor among the other houses. The one speech where the Baron explains to his nephew that the Atreides are being set-up for a trap could have been expanded just a little bit... or they could have added a quick scene with the other families complaining that someone needed to do something to resolve the lack of spice production. The ambush as it plays out in the movie just feels like a little too obvious of an ambush.
  13. I watched it in IMAX today, thought it was about as good as you can get while remaining basically faithful to the source material. They spent a bit more time on Caladan than they needed to but otherwise I thought the things done to tighten the story up were wisely selected. A "slow burn" is a good way to describe Dune so it's no surprise many criticisms about it are that it doesn't match the pace of SciFi that followed it and was more tailored to screen adaptations. I think I should watch the first Lord of the Rings film to see how it stacks up since it had a similar uphill battle being a portion of a larger text.
  14. They tested those waters with Macross Frontier but it didn't go far.
  15. I would love an animated Macross the First. My kids want nothing to do with super old looking anime. Of course, if I'm going to get my kids watching it, I probably would need a dubbed version also... so more than one hurdle.
  16. Not a peep here. Maybe I should also be checking with PayPal.
  17. Step 1: Post in the "what's it worth" thread. Step 2: Post a few more times in other threads. That will make it so you can post in the for sale thread (there's a minimum post count).
  18. I'm with you! Definitely a store of last resort and hopefully not the next NY.
  19. This argument about the way these characters SHOULD be acting based on how they were in SDF Macross are equally crazy to how they're described to be acting in the new movie. So, no harm no foul.
  20. The slow part is beyond my control, I have noticed it going down and coming up a lot lately but I don't know why. Email or PM me when you come across broken pictures. I think the last update to Wordpress broke a bunch of things but I have no way of knowing what is and isn't working without clicking through it all... and while I'm doing that, it will take forever on my own. EDIT - Also, if anybody with web skills does know some tricks I can do to improve either of these things, let me know! I'm just a content guy... everything else gets quickly beyond my skill set.
  21. Given the emblem is M&M with blue and red wings, I think we might infer that both Max and Milia are related to Xaos. While you're probably right, in a science fiction universe that only loosely grasps canon, none of the points you raise really matter. Misa and Minmay have been missing... that doesn't rule them out in even the slightest way... in fact it would lead into the intrigue of the situation. Milia and Max were both soldiers and politicians and apparently owners of an air circus or something... but they also explored numerous new systems so a scifi jackpot could have easily been had. A scifi writer can easily kill characters and resurrect them an episode later using any number of scifi plot contrivances... making a character suddenly wealthy and powerful would be barely an inconvenience.
  22. I said I get my macros info from anymoon
