The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
Scyla replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Diecst reviews MTs Meteor: Now I have to say I like what MT did here but there are a few things I don't comprehend. First, why is there nothing on the underside of the wings. I can't imagine that it would costs that much to produce two pieces more. On the other hand maybe the would need another set steel molds to cast those since the wings are fairly big. Nevertheless I would have paid the price. This is a general issue with most of the 3rd party items I receive nowadays and across the companies. They start to implement engineering techniques to save money, something I usually see with HasTak. No trap doors to hide obvious robot elements, omitting parts, not painting areas, etc. One of the reasons I was intrigued by the 3rd party movement was that they're not limited by the same restraints that HasTak has. However the MO nowadays seems to be: not just good but good enough. I can understand why they do it (to safe money) but I don't like it. Compared to my other collectible toy lines the Transformers always seem to be lacking in aspects that are important to me. The other issue is that this Starscream follows the new animation accurate style of the recent Masterpiece releases by Takara. I know why they did it because it has a wider appeal now but here is my reasoning why this might not be a sound decision: I thing that Takara will release a new Masterpiece seeker mold since the MP-03 mold is that old. I believe this and a new Optimus Prime will be announced soon which will cut off the demand for Meteor. Also MT produced the MP Megatron for my collection. Despotron and MP-10 just look grand together. MP-36 not so much. On the other hand you have a good chunk of the MP collectors that want their toys to follow the design aesthetic of MP-10 so there is a market for a new Seeker mold that neither Hasbro nor the 3rd party market satisfy yet. Maybe MT thought that this market share was captured by the ToyWorld Seekers but ToyWorld seems to be in a though spot right now and while I like what they did with the Coneheads I think a majority of the collector scene things they are too big for their collection. So everything they did has good reasons behind it. It just isn't aligned with my preferences so maybe my sensibilities are not representative of the market. Two other things. There seems to be an issue with the nosecone section not staying attached that well which is also a shame but maybe they will correct this with the main production run. I also wished they would have done something with the intakes on Meteors chest. Why not have them swivel to the side of the jet and flip the black bits so it doesn't look that obvious like a chest when looking at it from the underside. Well at least MT opted not to use the terribly swirly gray plastic for the main body (thank god) so maybe this is the Starscream for me.- 9275 replies

I still want a Big Convoy from PE in the style of Leonidas. Kuma, do you know if there are recasts of the Leonidas swords available? They are the only thing missing from my Xerxes. Maybe someone does a black and teal version of Origin Leonidas that comes with the swords and hilts.- 9275 replies

News from TFCon USA: 3rd Party slides: http://news.tfw2005.com/2017/09/30/tfcon-dc-2017-3rd-party-panel-slides-350384 Showroom images: http://news.tfw2005.com/2017/09/30/tfcon-dc-2017-showroom-pictures-349991 Super exited that MakeToys is doing a Galaxy Force Skywarp: Still wish they would have a mechanism to flip the wings over his head down. The prototype doesn't look as good as the Starscream looks though. Maybe this will change with the final production version.- 9275 replies

Thinking more about the SNES mini some more. For me Nintendo could release one SNES mini after another until the whole library is out there and I could be happy playing those games for the rest of my life. On the other hand I really like to pop the cartridges into the console so the new one doesn't give me all the nostalgia. I still don't understand why Nintendo have you the option to jam different SD cards into the slot of the console to recreate that. Producing these cards is probably a whole lot easier since they seem to have a problem producing the console. Another pro argument for buying the actual SNES games would be that I could get the European version of Contra III called Super Probotector where you could play as kick-ass Robots because Robots > Meatbags. Look how cool they are: The ones from the NES version where even more awesome: I'm just really concerned with buying the old SNES cartridges over ebay since there seem to be an awful lot of counterfeits around and there is no store any longer in my area where I could check them out before buying. I'd also need to buy some of games that where not released in Europe like Super Mario RPG which didn't run on the PAL SNES even with an adapter if I remember correctly. Long story short I will take a detour through the shopping mall tomorrow and see if they have some in stock there. If not I'm thinking about buying a Switch in spite.

Well they said theay keep me on theireaitinglist but after the NES mini I don't have much hope. It is a local store and not a big chain. Oddly the last time this happened was with the Collectors Edition of Vanilla WoW.

Saw the first two episodes on Netflix and I generally enjoyed it. Two remarks The opening is odd it looks more like an intro to Star Trek: Mythbusters where they look at how the tech in Star Trek looks. It doesn't fit to the series it tries to introduce. That is the same feeling that I got from the opening for Star Trek - Enterprise. What does this have to to with the show I don't get it. The other thing was:

I completely missed that the preorders for S.H.Figuarts Akuma from Street Fighter are already open: https://hlj.com/product/BANN19261 I'm glad they are going with the classic Akuma look not the weird SF V outfit so there is still hope for a classic Ken figure. I'd love to have at least the complete roaster of SF New Challengers in Figuarts form. Ideally with some memorable additions (like Juri) from SF IV. Not a fan of most of the SF V redesigns.

Nope, that is not for me. I'm getting MTs Thunder Erebus instead. Hope they do a God Bomber upgrade set in black. Speaking of 3rd Party toys. MMCs Insecticons turned out to be a huge disappointment to me. What are the chances FT does another release of their version? Maybe a three pack with an improved Forager? MMC really took a downward swing with their last releases. I have MMC Tyrantron (IDW Megatron), Turben (Stormbringer Whirl) and their two vulture audio cassettes on the way. From the reviews they look like at least back to status quo to me I wished that Turben would look more like MDMTE Whirl and they could have done that easily with more remolding at least in the hands and chest and still have it based on the Oberon mold. Oh well, at least he doesn't seem to have parts molded so thin that you can see passing light through them.- 9275 replies

Being on my third watchthrough of a UCS Millenium Falcon speed build I had the idea that Lego could sell add-on sets for the interior of the falcon. The way the inner sections are attached seems like easy to replace with a different build. Since I can't remember what other rooms where of any importance in the OT there could be some coming up in The Last Jedi. Maybe Disney said no to spoilers in the set and Lego decided the set was too expensive already and decided against more interior in the Falcon. Taking a closer look probably only the starboard aft compartment could be replaced since the starboard forward compartment is blocked by the dropping down gun and the battle damage. On the other hand it would take some major reconstruction of the cover plates to get access to this area. Its probably just an interesting thought I had. Would you be interested in buying and add-on set for the UCS Falcon?

But Hayates updated VF-31J was only shown with Super Parts equipped right? So why didn't they include those?

I've voted for the Gundam 00 Raiser since it is one of my favorite Gundam designs and I think a Katoki design of it would be quite interesting.

I'm surprised that the weapon container didn't get more use in the show. If I wherever Bandai I would have demanded a new container variant in every other episode.

It's on the 25th. I really wish HLJ would extend the shipping till the end of an calendar month. I often issue a shipping request and the next day an item becomes available and then the next item will take some time to arrive. Somehow many of the toys I order are released at the last third of a month. Maybe the next time I should ship in the middle of a month and not drag it out till the end. Anyhow, I went ahead and ordered a regular Max version.
-
Meh I need to ship my PW soon and I'd hope to include Milia in it. Thank you nevertheless.
-
Is there an exact release date for the standard Milia VF-1J?
-
Maybe Lego is lacking the ability to produce a set this complex to satisfy the demand extrapolated from the VIP sales. That said I think that the percentage of VIPs that are interested in buying the UCS falcon is much higher than in the general population.
