I want good dubs of everything, but I want my subtitled version with original japanese audio every time. There is a certain theme and feel to anime that is just not captured by dubs, no matter how good. Now, I'd be willing to let go of that rather negligible incremental gain from time to time if there was a quality dub available. Unfortunately, hardly any anime at all can be accused of featuring a quality dub and those that do have a good dub are barely a nose past the line of acceptability. I can't stand bad acting, whether it's live action or animated. Current dubbing standards - if they can be called that - do nothing but celebrate mediocre voice acting. What's worse, it will never get better if people simply endure the horde of bad dubbing work cause there is no incentive to do better. This past year, I watched Cowboy Bebop in japanese for the first time, having owned it and viewed it in english only for years. I was blown away by the differences in characterization and actually preferred several characters in japanese. I still watch the english dub from time to time, but even this mighty example has once again fallen to the original. Even as good as the Cowboy Bebop dub is, it's not good enough and it's sad to admit that nearly every dub aside from Bebop is worse. As for the great "reading versus viewing" debate that is ALWAYS a part of this discussion, I find watching subtitled anime no different than watching something in english while eating (something I do often). Like the incremental gain enjoyed by watching anime subtitled, the incremental loss from watching subtitled anime is negligible, in my opinion. In the absence of any real quality english dubbing, I'll go subtitled every time.

An acronym primer for newbies would be very valuable here on MW. GBP refers to the VF-1 Armored Valkyrie, GBP-1S Ground-Combat Protector Weapons System.

Wizard Entertainment has a big list of the Top 100 action figures according to them. Our 1/48 Scale Yamato VF-1A makes the cut at number 45 on the list, but is credited as a "Veritech" from "Robotech" despite being a Japanese product directly for Macross. Not sure how the hell to even contact them to note the error. Top 100 Action Figures, Page 3 (Yamato VF-1A 1/48 Scale at #45) Anyway, it's good news...sort of...

OMG, how ironic! I didn't know that either when I made the Fight Club reference. Hahahaha -
Not seeing anything except a directory.

I appreciate the effort, but that's way too small for me to use. Thanks anyway. I hope all is well with your family!

Macross 25th Anniversary and upcoming new TV series thread

I've ordered from Amazon.jp before and I live in Canada. Did the same thing Sdf-1. I've ordered CDs and Books. They all turn out fine. I am however, dreading the day I actually have an order problem (which is why I usually order small stuff). THAT will be interesting -
Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
Mr March replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The series is a melange of everything, so I wouldn't try to distill the series down to a single source for homage or reference. You have combinations of both eastern and western religious, political, scientific and literary influences throughout. Almost like a Cowboy Bebop medley, but less focused. -
Pages 102, 99, 96, 95 contains art I don't have. I also don't have the Neo Nupetiet-Vergnitzs nor the Zentradi Bolognese Stealth Frigate.

I would KILL for a high resolution scan of that valkyries-to-scale picture at the bottom of the page. Hell, mail me a photocopy and I'll scan it!

Attempting to find the book to which the following picture belongs: It says Newtype, so perhaps it's an issue of the magazine or one of the 100% collection books, perhaps?

This list needs more Yoko Kanno

Is that supposed to be a rear view of the VF-4? What is Lucky Star? What does it have to do with Macross? Why can't I stop asking questions?

Well, to be brutally honest, if there's even the hint of something weakening, that's enough to keep me away. Like I've said, I'm not interested in purchasing the thing if it's still a fundamentally flawed design. I also know there are users here voting in the polls that don't have a VF-0A Shin with broken shoulders but have stress marks and/or are not transforming it at all to avoid breakage. That's certainly not what I want out of the toy. I don't play with my Yammies and they are display pieces at best, but I handle them very carefully and I transform them at least once every few months. If the VF-0A Shin can't even handle proper care and a half dozen transformations a year, I want no part of it.

Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone

This might actually be a good thing. I didn't care for the NGE series myself, but I'm kinda interested in giving it another shot condensed down into 4 films. I might get a lot more out of it without all the filler of the series. I'm also eager to see the mecha in new animation, since I've always admired the EVA mecha designs in spite of my dislike for the series. The reviews actually mean very little to a viewer like myself, so I'm not worried. -
Welcome to MacrossWorld sircastico. It's great too see so many new members! Well, you sure picked a smashing way to make your first post. Those are great pictures! Your lighting is a little hard, but I really like your angles, closeups and poses. Good work! I only own two Yammies myself and the VF-1J is my favorite of the two (the other being the VF-1S Focker).

Can't comment on the picture with all the model toys, but I can direct you to some help for the anime series. Fellow board member briscojr84 has an exhaustive list of little known mecha from SDF Macross on his website. Here's a few examples: Unknown Aircraft FL-200 Mistral The brief shot was actually two Ghost fighters shown from the rear; that one big engine is a dead giveaway. They are QF-3000E's, as shown in the picture from my website. The two VF-1 stealth-like fighters are shown in episode 5 (DVD time index 13:40). As jenius has pointed out, I've given them the fanon name "Dark Birds." They appear to be low visibility colors for operation in space. Dark Bird from episode 5 on the Macross Mecha Manual Our good friend ChrisG over at the MAHQ also has a color picture for the Dark Bird, which you can see here: Dark Bird on the MAHQ Well, I hope that helps you in your exploration of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross series. Congratulations on your DVD purchase. The DVD set is quite the experience.

Macross Plus Remaster Box /Macross 7 TV/OVA

WHOA! Line art of the YF-19 special arm weapon exists! This has never been seen before! Oh man, I have to get a hold of that. -
I'd be lying if I said my fondness for the show itself doesn't play a significant role in my enjoyment of the mecha. I've actually disliked the design of a mecha before watching the show only to fall in love with the mecha when I become a fan of the show. I hated the Bebop designs before I watched the show, now they are one of my favorite set of ship designs But in the case of Kaiyodo's Revoltech figures, you don't even need to know anything about the shows at all to appreciate the mecha. For example, I know nothing about Getter Robo G or Shin Getter Robo stuff and the designs are very retro-super robot (a genre which I've never liked). But the figures are so cool I find myself admiring the mecha too. I could see myself impulse buying one of those figures if I happened to see them in a hobby shop here in Tdot. Or, in some cases I love the mecha, but didn't like the show. I've always adored the Evangelion mecha designs but disliked the anime. I can see myself purchasing an EVA soon

That'd be great if they moved on to bigger and better stuff. But I still lament that great site.

Well, it's not like we can take the books with us when we die. I mean ultimately, what am I gonna care in another 30-40 years? Still, I can't bring myself to destroy such a rare art book from one of my beloved franchises. But a little spine damage I can live with if it makes the M3 possible. The thought had occurred to me to buy a bootleg copy of Macross Perfect Memory and completely dismantle it. But I can't justify buying bootlegs, even to destroy them. The M3 would forever be in debt to organized crime, however minor a crime it may be. I couldn't do that. If you've got the picture, the time and a high resolution capable scanner, please submit the drone picture. I haven't received anything yet.
