  1. When we say the 98 Zilla movie we are talking about that US abomination right? (Just making sure there was no Japanese movie the same year) I NEVER considered that a real Godzilla movie - and I even liked the Godzilla 85 movie with the flying Norelco razor ship. (I think that was Gojira 1984 in Japan)
  2. > There's also neat missions that make you travel in time to the 23rd century and interact with the crew of the original enterprise which was always fun. STOP! You will get me to try the game again! (Maybe I just need to read a book during the long voyage bits...)
  3. Thanks guys, found the thing. Sadly I then figured out the game is just not for me, far too much sitting around watching the ship travel from system to system. I'll most likely play it off and on a couple times a week.
  4. I love the 3 story shorts episode they list, and the wedding of Leela and Fry sounds awesome. It needs to end with the words "It's not really dead as long as we remember it". (and then come back as a Netflix show)
  5. I just started reading the first book, do the books and the show differ significantly later on? Having already seen the show I don't want to read the book if there is not a significant difference, the writing is great but I only have so much time ina day - and there are lots of books I have not read yet.
  6. Hey guys, help out a total loser nube at the game. I've got anomolous sensor data, some lady says to basically put it in the slot south of here. South of there is just a transporter pad. What do I do with the stuff? Any sites for a newbie to go and learn? (the online help was lacking at best) edit - especially with the "Go here, talk to X" missions. Is there a map that shows how to get to X most of the time (I get it if searching is required but finding a guy at Star Fleet Command should not require knowing what level he is on and then going there to hit the level map) (be kind, I admit to being ignorant...)
  7. Wife and I saw it today, we both give it an 8 out of 10. Predictable but well done with only one major WTH (what the heck) part.
  8. It is also quite different from the show so watching it does not ruin anything.
  9. There are a bunch of people that remember Star Blazers but have no idea it was Yamato in Japan. They may be trying to catch that audience. Small as it may actually be. Or they may be trying to re-use the trademark they have on the Star Blazers name for rights purposes. Either way is it a win! SB did a great job sticking close to the original (for the time) and if anyone wants subbed only versions they have them already.
  10. Execution was quite different too. One of the sillier parts of the new show is saying the sub was at the bottom of an alternate universe, the bottom?
  11. I've always wondered why dubbed translation is not done more often (like is done with interviews). For high speed visual intensive shows (anime) it would allow the original VA cast to be heard while also allowing the viewer to keep focus on the visuals.
  12. Ignoring HG, I might buy it for the minis. I bought the original Pallidium RPG way back when, and it stunk something fierce. The minis could be used for a Mekton game though, or as others have said it could be used for BT gaming.
  13. > And I remember watching "Clueless" Anything where a play on words is a major part of the narrative often falls apart when translated. Add Ryhme into the mix (and, shudder, rythm and tempo) and the translation is almost certainly doomed to fail. I would HATE to be the person that has to translate Dr. Suess stories...
  14. > sometimes leaving quite a bit of the original Japanese names in place (such as Kekkaishi). When I was a lad in the sixties and seventies leaving Japanese names in was just not done, for almost anything except Kurosawa films. Most especially animation. The reason is that all animation was considered childrens programming and Japanese names were hard to pronounce and culturally unfamiliar (and the parents of said kids had bad memories of WWII). When the kids of my generation grew up it was in a world where Japan had been an ally (and a close one at that) for our entire lives. I think that has a lot to do with the switch, along with the cross polinization of ideas and words between the US and Japan. Sempai is another word, a large number of english speakers are now familiar with the term, when I was a kid that would not have been the case.
  15. I'd of loved to see a whole movie just with Kirk as XO on a ship captained by Harry Mudd!
  16. Part of the problem is that the Macross dub in particular is just plain bad. The best of the dubs find a way to keep the original meaning and sense of wordplay (when appropriate) while making it sound like natural English. Due to the differences in Cadence between Japanese and English that is not a skill to be taken lightly. The best example I can think of is the number of times a Japanese character will simply say "Hi!" as a response when in English to simply say "Yes!" sounds stupid or at least un-natural.
  17. Having seen neither the books or the anime I'm cautiously optimistic. If Tom Cruise is not in his competition movie mode (Top Gun, Cocktail, Days of Thunder) and is in serious action star or even serious actor mode then he does good work.
  18. In "real" life he might have gotten command of a smaller vessel, or made XO of a the Big E. Most likely he would have just gotten a medal and a single grade promotion and then off to the wardroom of a destroyer or frigate to learn how things are done and to get some seasoning. Being ST, well, that can all be skipped. Also - most of the fleet was not at Earth so there WERE plenty of captains that should have gotten the job before Kirk did. (once again, this is movie land so...)
  19. Yup, and the "HawkMen" wore plastic garbage bag wings or some such nonsense. (I'm not sure, I stopped watching after the second episode and only caught a glimpse here and there)
  20. As a one off I thought it was fine, but the original singer is still the best version by far. (having grown up with the Star Blazers song I can't really complain, THAT is corny)
  21. They actually have a whole slew of SciFi titles in development... A bunch of series, many with spaceships (and most of them at least sound interesting to me) http://www.blastr.com/2013-4-10/syfy-developing-7-new-series-aliens-magic-angels-and-more And two Miniseries I am looking forward to seeing as well. http://www.blastr.com/2013-4-10/syfy-announces-childhoods-end-and-ringworld-miniseries Of course, being SyFy, I am prepared for disappointment...
  22. That would be a PC Jr. Released around the time if I remember correctly. A friend of mine had a father that owned one, a true piece of trash. Speaking of trash brings us back to those commercials...
