  2. I honestly cannot recall the creators of Macross Frontier commenting on why they chose to make the protagonists private military contractors. I checked a variety of artbooks with staff interviews and came up dry as to the inspiration for the choice. @sketchley might know more. Now, if I were inclined to guess as to what the inspiration might be... my suspicion would run more towards similar organizations in popular fiction around the time development first began on Macross Frontier. The one that jumps to mind is MITHRIL from Shoji Gatoh's Full Metal Panic!. The second season of the anime (Full Metal Panic!: The Second Raid) aired in Summer 2005, and the original light novel was just kicking off its final climactic story arc. MITHRIL is, of course, a super-elite mercenary organization that recruits the best soldiers of fortune from around the world for its mission to prevent World War III by acting as an NGO superpower that field tests the latest and greatest robotic weapons for the NATO powers while wiping out terrorists, dictatorial regimes, and other forces aiming to destabilize the world (like their predecessor organization AMALGAM). The two organizations are quite similar in principle. though Macross Frontier's SMS is a bit more cynical given that it's run as a business (rather than being a NATO proxy force set up with implausible deniability in mind), tying into the show's theme of runaway growth of corporate power and influence. I'm inclined to suspect that there is probably no specific real world inspiration for SMS. Public perception of PMCs has always been rather unfavorable. They're not something that'd generally be considered "heroic". Particularly in the mid-2000s, when public awareness of PMCs was focused mainly on scandals, controversies, and criminal activities tied to PMC troops in the middle east.

  4. I'm inching closer to the finish line. The oil weathering is taking me much longer than I expected, but I really like how it's all coming together. Each layer brings a new dimension. I've also got the shading and detailing done on the pilot.
  5. Thanks! I’m going to finish priming in black and the build up with Mr. Color 1 white until it’s fairly light then I have a Mr. Color gundam violet that is very close for the top. I’m thinking I’ll feather it instead of a hard edge, kind of like the F-15.
  6. It’s just a one piece model, I don’t know why they extend - maybe it retracts for landing and hook deployment? I thought it looked alright so I went with it!
  7. Battroid comparison We can only dream. Maybe one day a toy manufacturer will run with this idea and give us a 1/55 Version 2. For now this is enough for me.
  8. Can you spot the differences?
  9. The Shy Hero and the Assassin Princesses is another addition to the list of titles I'm dropping this season. Scooped Up by an S-Rank Adventurer is also joining the drop list. Ruri Rocks is a lot more fun and interesting, despite being edutainment. It's clear the art department on this one likes their girls EXTRA THICC. Even Nagi's undergraduate assistant is drawn that way. Cultural Exchange with a Game Centre Girl had a pretty good episode today too. Started Hotel Inhumans... It's... it's something. I wouldn't say it's something good. The premise seems rather thin.
  10. I completely missed his Valkyrie!

  13. when Macross Frontier was being made, was it the 2nd Iraq war that was the source of some of those ideas around PMC troops? or was it the mercenary contractors made infamous during that war that caught the MF writers's eye?
  14. Oh nice ! I'm looking forward to seeing more of this
  15. Nice work. Sometimes it’s the little upgrades that make a huge difference. I use an extra set of DYRL hands from a 1/60 V2 for my Yamato VF-1A Hikaru.
  16. I am losing hope in Witch Watch. I liked the show to begin with. But too many other men in the house. I find them annoying.
  17. Looking good! Which colors have you selected for the body and accents?
  18. noice! I wonder why you use the extended Battroid mode GU11 there - but it kinda looks badass
  19. Oh, goody. I enjoy the heck outta this series even though the topics that are most near and dear, LEGO and Transformers, have already been done. I don't always care for the editing, as they make a lot of cuts in the testimonials by the people who were there for comedic effect, and I'd rather hear everything they have to say. The 80s was a special time, and I doubt, given the trends over the decades since, that anything like it will ever happen again. I think it's important to get the stories from these folks who created all these toys, many of which have become iconic. Too, these guys and gals aren't getting any younger, so the impetus for capturing their words, their memories and anecdotes is all the more significant.
  20. The extra hands that come with the FUGU Not Jetfire fit really well. I did have to go after the gun hand with a little love from the xacto knife, but it’s now a nice snug fit. Yay! I frakking hate the stock hands and they can’t even hold the gun. Now Roy is complete.
