Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!
Seto Kaiba replied to Valkyrie Driver's topic in Movies and TV Series
On a lark, I did some research and the more I think about it the more I wonder how any PMC in the Macross setting can even afford to function. Modern PMCs have it pretty easy. Equipping infantry can be done fairly cheaply, with most nations spending between $5000 and $20,000 per head for basic infantry equipment like basic uniforms, PPE, firearms, and so on. That cost can balloon out to the low six figures if specialist equipment is involved, however. That's got to be peanuts compared to PMCs in Macross, where the standard soldier is a Valkyrie pilot operating a plane that's got to cost at least the equivalent of tens of millions of dollars. I guess that explains why every PMC so far seems to have spun off of a megacorporation that was doing business in other industries. They'd need a massive amount of seed capital to start a business like that. Even a used, two-generations-old Valkyrie is not exactly cheap by all indications. The VF-1 and replica VF-0 are apparently cheap enough that the hobbyist market can afford them, but Chelsea Scarlett blows her Vanquish League winnings for the entire 2058 season on three decommissioned VF-11s in order to cobble together just one working aircraft... and that's implied to be like Formula One-level prize money (potentially hundreds of millions of dollars), and it's still two generations old at that point. It's enough to make you wonder how much these PMCs are getting paid that they can afford this equipment, and how it compares to just having a regular New UN Forces unit funded using the same amount of cash. I'm sure I'm overthinking it massively, but that's what I do. I'm an engineer, I analyze things ruthlessly. -
I don't intend to get this set, but as a casual Star Trek fan for whom Next Generation remains my favorite of the various series, I hope this is executed well. Having a large set like the first Death Star playset, which was executed very well IMHO, I imagine this is going to follow a similar play pattern where the interiors of the saucer and main body are sectioned off to provide various settings from the show (Ten-Forward, the bridge and Captain's ready room, Holodeck, transporter room, and engineering at minimal), as well as including a very miniaturized shuttle, much like the DS included a chibi Vader's TIE. (FWIW, I'd love a line of chibi ships- bigger than the micro-fighters, but generally capable of holding a single minifig and designed to look like the actual ships). I guess time will tell, but at this point, I think the Death Star playsets are the best example of what to expect. Shame Tasha Yar's not included in that lineup- she had the makings of an interesting character, but according to Denise Crosby herself, the producers weren't interested in doing much with Tasha and Denise decided to quit the show. We got to see her in person during a convention here in Spokane years ago and she shared a funny story about her and Whil Wheaton sneaking onto the set of a movie being shot near the Star Trek set. In full uniforms, they joined in a dance scene for some teen movie back in the 90s. I can't remember the name of the film, but the way she told it had the crowd laughing. She came across as very sweet and personable, and Spokane is special to her b/c her grandfather, Bing Crosby, grew up here and attended Gonzaga University. The house he grew up in remains on the college's campus as a museum.

We're good, Lechuck, and your tone came through clearly. Appreciate the wink. I am indeed passionate about aircraft and that particular day, my cantankerous side was enflamed. As to my generalization of fans just accepting poor aviation alts, it's not without precedent, as I watch any number of reviews and I'm often struck by the praise given to these alt modes regardless of how poorly they're done. I can only imagine the ire, the pure umbrage that the fandom would have if Takara suddenly took the same design approach to cars, let's say perhaps Sideswipe, where his windshield and cabin were only half their normal width, the arms were outside of the doors just tabbed in, and the back wheel wells are completely enclosed with no wheels to speak of. That's my general reality with jet-moded Transformers- extreme inaccuracies that receive praise from both fans (on this and other notable TF forums) and by both reviewers and commentators on those reviews. Thus was the impetus for my generalized critique of the fandom at large. Perhaps I was a bit brusque about it, for which I tender my apology; it was meant in jest, but there's certainly a large element of my frustration coloring the tone of my little missive. Again, I meant no personal affront to anyone in particular (except a poke at Takara), and I'll try to be more mindful to avoid generalities when next I feel a charged rant ready to explode all over the page. Thanks for your comment, Lechuck. Again, I hope the new Predaking turns out to be a satisfying set of figures- always a great feeling.- 17488 replies

You are the first person I've seen who bought the Tread FIRST, then getting the Legioss. Nice LOL I want a poster of that box art, it is just too awesome.

Arrived today with no fuss from Nin-Nin, decently packed with no wasted volume. I am very impressed with the engineering and build quality. The main landing gear alone are an amazing example of complexity and cleverness, and when theyβre extended theyβre rock solid. Thank goodness the Legioss is getting reissued this month. I NEED one for this beast.

Nice! And, yes, the muted blue looks great in your photos. But my OCD keeps seeing the bendy gunpod and the not perfectly aligned yellow array thingy.

Oh, I wasn't worried about the playability scale, just that I hadn't seen anything about a shuttle separately. Good to know they have something better planned then.

It's lechuck, please not the dude thing. π¬ Appreciate if you could try not to assume things about me or what I'm supposedly into. I take this sort of labelling a bit personal. Thanks.π€ Not sure why the place of forum should make a difference, but yes you are absolutely right, nothing wrong with critiquing Takara or any other toy company here or elsewhere. Haha... I was hoping you would get that nod. ππ No worries all is good, no personal grudges being carried. For full clarity, my contention with your posting was not with the criticism of Takara not making good fighter modes (you are fully entitled to that view), but more about the generalisation of others being mindless fans just taking anything that comes their way. You have that burning passion for aviation because of your profession/career, it's cool and so I can understand why you would go with more emotional words here. Maybe next time more diplomatic wording or maybe I'm just to emotional about this whole point β I don't know, but really that is all I have to say. ππ- 17488 replies

Thanks Tking22. I appreciate your view on the situation. First, I'm flattered that you embraced my oxymoronic phrase, and also by the spirit in which you used it. ππSecond, I'll not judge anyone for liking what they like, and whether or not this new Predaking is "deliciously terrible" or not will be entirely up to you. You seem enthusiastic about it, and I hope it exceeds expectations. It doesn't interest me personally, so I have no opinion. However, toys exist to bring joy, and as an owner of many, many toys, I've been pleasantly surprised by some and disappointed by others for all sorts of reasons. My hope for you is that this is one of the good ones- pleasantly surprising, fun, aesthetically pleasing, enjoyable to handle. Finally, thanks for sharing this here, as there may be other members to whom it appeals that may otherwise have gone unaware. It's one of the things I enjoy about this forum, whether sharing the info or benefitting from shared info. (I'm generally on the latter side). I hope you didn't take my colorful critique of Takara and their approach to aircraft alt-moded Transformers personally, as I meant no affront to anyone, except perhaps, Takara themselves, and even that in a light-hearted manner. If I offended, I apologize. I stand by my critique, however, but it's just one insignificant guy's opinion and at the end of the day, it is of no import. As a Transformers fan since it began in 1984, Takara's work is a very important part of my life and I generally applaud and support what they do, though I do have my niggles from time to time. π Cheers!- 17488 replies

Very cool ! So what does the qr code show?

And that's specifically why I'm never getting it at $400. This thing should be $250 tops, but lego and licenees gonna price gouge.
-
Rumoured a minifigure sits in it. Remember, these are 18+ display pieces, where scale and playability are irrelevant.

Price doesn't seem too bad... in yen, anyway. Actual import prices will affect my final decision. EDIT: Nope, I'm out. I just saw a photo of the prototype with MPG Super Ginrai, and Ginrai's a little bigger. And since Ginrai is a little smaller than Legacy/AotP/SS Combiners, that means Predaking will be significantly smaller. Doesn't work for me.- 17488 replies

Lol yeah I can't with stuff like that, far too much going on, never liked this combiner in the slightest. Lol let it go for once dude, I assure you, nobody cares that you're really into what Takara puts out. This is MW, you gotta accept it's not a TF site and more people will be critical of what Takara puts out, nothing wrong with that.- 17488 replies
