Whether it be a group of rag tag Rebel fighters flying towards the Death Star or a young lad piloting the Last Starfighter. What are you favorite space battles? Me? 1. The Battle of Endor (ROTJ) 2. Knight26 Posted May 12, 2004 Share Posted May 12, 2004 Movies/TV -Battle of Endor (hey the biggest star wars space battle, gotta love it) -Death Blossum (LS) -Macross Plus OVA (openning and Earth orbital insertion) -The nebula battle in ST:WOK (terrible from a technical standpoint, but a great game of cat and mouse) -Macross DYRL (openning and ending battle) -New BattleStar Galactica Nebula Escape battle (mostly for the somewhat realistic physics and the desperation it showed) -THe battle for Earth (B5, again props for the realistic physics) -Colony Drop (Gundam 0083, just for the tactics used, the tech is iffy, but the tactics are an interesting study) Books (short list)- -Last Battle of Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card) -Battle of Eltair Green Nebula (oops that's one of mine, lol) -Battles in the Concquers Trilogy (Tim Zahn) -Battle of Coruscant (X-wing Rogue Squadron, Mike Stackpole) -Battle of Kilrah (Wing COmmander FLeet Action, I think Mercedes Lackey) That's all I can think of right now. Seven Posted May 13, 2004 Share Posted May 13, 2004 This one is obscure, but Volume 0 of the short lived Yamato 2520 OAV series had a 6 minute space battle between the Earth fleet and a new enemy that would've made any fan of Ichiro Itano's work with capital ship battles cry. Nonetheless, my vote goes to Char's Counterattack. A well thought out and well choreographed battle. Back to the battle......thousands of ships. The Earth fleets unleashing relentless shock gun fire and the alien fighters (with a very interesting horseshoe design) performing suicide runs. Wow.....I wish I didn't record over the Yamato 2520 preview. Some of Syd Mead's GREATEST designs (and that's not saying much). I WANT THIS in SOP form. Battle above Luna 5 and Axis in Gundam: Char's Counterattack I just love how Amuro despite having a large disadvantage (come on fighting the Jadg Dodga, Alpha Azieru, and several Gera Dodgas is quite the feat) he comes out on top and the way that the Londo Bell task force eventually slices through the Neo-Zeon forces. Colony drop in 0083 is pretty good with the way it was hit and run until support comes. Final battle of the First Space War in both the original series and DYRL? The VF-11Bs VS the Renegade Zentradi power armor in the asteriods. The final battle in Gundam Seed, gotta love three ways. Most of the Zeta Gundam battles with the smaller scale combat. F-ZeroOne Posted May 13, 2004 Share Posted May 13, 2004 (edited) Number of my favourites already mentioned, but here are some others: 1) X-Bomber/Star Fleet: most of the space battles in this are pretty cool, but theres one where the heroes are having to fend off an attack by enemy fighters while protecting the female lead who is flying a kind of space scooter. Remarkably well done considering the shows chosen format. 2) Gunbuster when Gunbuster fights the alien fleet (not the final episode). Different yet a wonderful homage to old mecha shows. 3) The Death Star run. I've seen it dozens of times - we all have - but it still works. 4) Project A-Ko = humans vs alien dreadnaught. An amazing scene for a parody; according to the director, animated by someone with an axe to grind on DYRL! 5) Any of the battles in Peter F. Hamilitons Nights Dawn trilogy; enlivened by dialogue like "We'll have to jettison that hull plate, its got a half-life longer than some geological eras now!" and proper British swearing... 6) Any battle in 8-bit classic Elite.
