I'm guessing they're saving him for a potential sequel villain, then clone Bison for part 3 if they get there. Street Fighter is weird lol. My only worry about the film so far is there's a really big cast, maybe too big, I'm guessing a few characters will just be fight scenes, no way they can focus and put actual character time into a cast this big. If it has good reviews then I'll see it. It’s a great movie and one of the best, if not the best comic adaptations ever. The style works great for a comedy, but I don’t think I’d want to see street fighter trying that kind of absurdity. That being said, I do highly recommend watching Scott Pilgrim if you’re ok with absolute absurdity and a visual style that cares nothing for reality Quote
Old_Nash_II Posted December 14, 2025 Posted December 14, 2025 The Bison that would make sense Bonus trash, or "Damn, the hitboxes are really wonky in this version" Quote
mikeszekely Posted December 14, 2025 Author Posted December 14, 2025 You guys keep bringing up the animated movie, I keep tell you Street Fighter II V was the better animated product. Anyway, does the movie look good like The Godfather good? Heck no. But does it look it could be the same sort of dumb but fun movie as, say, Sudden Death. Quote
Mog Posted December 14, 2025 Posted December 14, 2025 Anyone else feel like the teaser has a little hint of all those AI Street Fighter slop trailers? Would be nice if it gets to Bloodsport level, but would be perfectly fine with Kickboxer level of cheese. Quote

I utterly loved Street Fighter II V, especially the part in the first few episodes where Guile beats the living hell out of both Ken and Ryu. 😁 Quote

Sildani Posted December 15, 2025 Posted December 15, 2025 David Dastmalchian look like he's playing Raul Julia playing M. Bison. I have very little hope for this movie. Quote

Oh I dunno, the aforementioned anime movie was played pretty much completely straight and managed to be a banger. SF2V is a fun little alternate universe romp, but I find I just lose interest by the halfway mark every single time I try to watch it. And whereas the movie had a major influence on the franchise going forward - establishing Sagat's shoryuken-derived scar, the lightning storm meadow as a recurring stage, Bison's entire design, etc. - basically nothing the show does has any lasting impact. It's no real fault of the show's - it can't help its being made alongside the similarly-intentioned Zero/Alpha series - but still. Quote

It was a good movie but it was still dumb, goofy, over the top and the story and characters still can't be taken seriously. There's just no avoiding that when adapting Street Fighter, it's still a dude in a white ghi shooting fire balls at either a seven foot muy Thai fighter, an Uber Nazi looking super villain dictator, or any one of the various full on over the top monster final bosses. I guess we're running on different definitions of "straight," then. In my view, the movie not being ironic about its setting or otherwise doing a wink-and-nod to the audience is how it plays it straight. It doesn't raise an eyebrow at Ryu/Sagat being able to shoot a Hadouken/Tiger Shot, or Fei Long having a Shienkyaku, or... Blanka. Quote

MK has DC and SF has the Marvel attachment The Japanese CEO's and executives hate MK and see it as an cheap low brow inferior ripoff of Street Fighter making it highly unlikely there will ever be a crossover. Kinda like how kaiju fans would love to see a Godzilla X Gamera crossover, but Toho won't ever agree to that. Still everyone thought a KOF and Street Fighter crossover would never happen, and Godzilla was finally allowed to fight Gamera in the Gigabash videogame, so who the hell knows? Quote

Taking it seriously made it far my goofy IMO, it's still the same absurdity, but they tried to make it edgy, realistic and cool in the same setting with the same characters, it made me laugh as much as the Van Damme film. I will never not laugh at Ryu staring down a giant villain then they start shooting off fire and lightning, you just can't escape the stupidity and over the top nature of the source. It's cool, and a fun movie, but goofy as hell. Attempting to adapt the source material seriously won't just make audiences take the absurdity of this franchise more seriously, it's just another avenue that leads to the franchise being goofy and over the top, trying to take it seriously is cringe. I think that the only decent balance was the YouTube Legacy and Assassin's First series, even then, it still fell into the trappings of trying to take an absurd series seriously. It looked real, they took the source more seriously and attempted to ground the characters, setting and fighting, but it was still dudes fighting and shooting multi colored fire balls at each other. Better to just lean into the chaos. Quote
