Whats Lying on your Workbench MK IV

@pengbuzz Your Big D is looking really good with a nice smooth surface to it now, and I like the base. It does look like a com badge.

As to other things. it is a hard pill but one that needs to be taken. You have to do what is best for your health, and moving to another less physically stressful project would be best at the moment. It doesn't mean the Big D never gets done, it just means it's on temporary hold. And I'm sure like you, I also have many things on temporary hold!:D

Thanks Thom! It was just pretty sobering when your physician tells you that; talk about a fast ball out of left field! But the way she stated it, I was risking my health even thinking about trying anything with that pattern.

Another issue that bugs me is the money one; whenever we have any to spare, something comes right along and swallows it up (and I'm sure other folks end up with this as well).

I meant to ask, is there a model club somewhere in your area? Long shot probably, but I wonder if you could get assistance for big sanding jobs such as for the Big D?

As for money and the sudden pit that develops just when you need it, yup, pretty universal pain!<_<

Unfortunately, no. Hobby shops and clubs both have been drying up where I live. Thankfully, the sanding was largely done before my hands gave out on me, so that's not an issue.

UPDATE: hands finally healed enough to continue on the ship:

Got the stand (mostly) painted up; decided to make the base look as much like a combadge as possible:

101_1118.JPG.4539c20e05a96f6977e92454085cbed8.JPG101_1118.JPG.4539c20e05a96f6977e92454085cbed8.JPG 101_1119.JPG.d98de598bc1b22d617af8654d4e9b9fb.JPG 101_1120.JPG.74f0c65ba2f083c57ff096a79382d7da.JPG

The bad news: the doctor told me that I had basically "overused my hands" and had a repetitive stress injury that exacerbated the arthritis in them. I had brought along the instruction sheet for the model kit and showed him why and what ended up causing this; she was very frank with me:

"Robert... if you try cutting, taping or even trying to draw that pattern, you're going to be in rigid braces for the next six months. That makes MY hands hurt looking at it, and I don't even build models! Let me level with you: you WILL do permanent injury to your fingers and wrists if you attempt that kind of thing. I know you like your hobbies, but that is just simply unsafe for you. If you have another way of doing it, I strongly recommend you use it.  Otherwise, I am NOT going to treat you again if I find you back here and you attempted this."

So my choices: 1) find a way to afford aztec decals (good luck with that; our rent goes up next month and the car is due for emissions); 2) leave the ship as is.

Basically, the model is finished; it cannot go any further without the aztec decals. I will simply put this up on a shelf as is, no decals whatsoever; I dislike the look of the registry against a plain hull (just doesn't look right). I would have liked to have completed it, but that's no longer in my power. I'm going to have to stick to smaller projects for the foreseeable future and consider this indefinitely unfinished.

(I'd really like to know why rents are so damned expensive! Seriously? )

Thanks for watching... hopefully I can continue the armor project I have on the side.

That first picture is a really cool shot. It looks like it's cruising in deep space behind a new star.

I dont know if you brush painted this, airbrushed it, or both but the painting looks perfect, especially on the engines and what i assume is the engine intake (I don't know that much about ST ships).

Also if it makes you feel less crazy, rents are genuinely insane where I live too. It's impossible to find a home that isn't in various states of disrepair for under a thousand.

Thanks! It's brush painted (after sanding all the details off of it; I'll have to add the life boats and transporter emitters back later). The Bussard Ramscoops on the end were just red sharpie marker that was squeezed into some Rustoleum crystal clear finish and brushed on the insides.

As for rents here: they're trending about $1500 for a one-bedroom. O.O

Maybe try getting into some of the newer Bandai kits. Some are pretty cheap and are barely attached to the sprue, so not much part clean up and many have pretty good color accuracy out of box.

@pengbuzz Your Enterprise and the custom comm badge stand looks terrific! Cool idea!

That sucks about your hands! If you DON'T use your hands, they get stiff and won't work right. Use them too much and the arthritis kicks in. I don't know what to say! - MT

This morning I needed a break from starships and submarines, SO, I broke out the Tamiya 1/350 USS Missouri! NOT actually starting this kit, but I knew from others build videos there were a couple of simple PE parts that went onto the walls of the superstructure with some PE doors so I delved in. I gotta say, this may be a 90s kit I think???... but maaaan I'm in heaven already just messing around with stuff. Also Tamiya's included PE isn't brass... it's silver and much MUCH harder to cut off the fret but also much MUCH more sturdy than the brass stuff, I kinda dig it. Anywhoo I went ahead and drilled out the portholes JIC I get a wild hair later to light this thing. Prob not but having the holes there looks better anyway.

Looks like you have quite the model there! Looking forward to seeing how you do this one!

UPDATE: just waiting on stuff for the E-D. But while I was waiting, I had to go digging for a replacement cord in my junk box (pc monitor cable went south on me!). While I eventually found the replacement in my other box, I did find this (previously a thrift-store rescue that had been redone once, but then stripped down and redone again):

101_1129.JPG.1b0ddd5303a6865cd87a5d74726ae8c9.JPG 101_1131.JPG.cbaead02b8400805a1094858e4eea05c.JPG

Obviously needs quite a bit of refinement, but I had previously corrected the nav deflector trench on it. After the E-D, I'm thinking of redoing this one (at least as much as my hands will put up with). It's the 1/1400 version, so it's in scale with the E-D.

Stay tuned...

@joscasle Those models look great!

@derex3592 "NOT actually starting this kit" I'd hate to see what happens when you DO start the kit!😁 It's a great kit for the age. That PE makes it look that much better.

@pengbuzz Another Starfleet ship being salvaged! Great save! Is there a big invasion by some cube shaped ships we should know about?😉 - MT

Finally, some time again and I finished the X-29.

the plamax vf-1 made much progress today as well.

Maybe I can get it done tomorrow, but lets see. I need to finish up the VF-22, VF-19 and F-14 as well. The most annoying thing will be the Decals on the VF-1, as I am going for the Minmay 2009 scheme.

That’s the 1/72 one right? I preordered the version that comes with decals and just curious about your thoughts on this kit. It looks a lot simpler than the hasegawa, but also appears to be more anime detailed rather than real world detailed like the hasegawa version.

It’s looking good so far

Yeah, the 1/72 one. I really like it. The only downside is how the wings are working. The Hasegawa kit has this pin like setup where you can stick the wings onto the fuselage later. The plamax kit has a bad solution. Just two pylons you stick the wings on and then close the fuselage. What to do about it?
1. Live with it and close the fuselage after painting everything.
2. C-Clamp trick. Enforce the bearing at the end of the wing and cut off a piece, so you have a c-clamp, which you can snap onto the pylons in the fuselage.

The Plamax kit looks a bit more bulkier than the Hasegawa kit as well. I will compare it to my Kakizaki VF-1 once the Plamax thing is done.

You could always carefully cut the top of the fuselage (following the panel lines closest to it) and remove the precise area above the wing pivot:

Untitled-1.jpg.c60f9a613cc8ebba229e70e41ca459e0.jpg

Once everything is dry and in place, simply re-glue the fuselage sections back into place; the panel lines should disguise the glue joint. I ended up doing a similar operation for my X-wing fighter when I had to rebuild the x-wing scissor joint, and it came out pretty decent.

Another way you could do it is to locate the hinge pin inside the fuselage, trim if off and drill out a hole for a new hinge pin to be made from part of the sprue tree. Once the wing is in place, trim the new hinge pin flush with the hull, glue into place and touch up where is shows up on the fuselage. I acually did this one on one of my Imai Vf-1 transformable kits.

I think your second option there would work well, as the underside would be covered by the engine bay/legs. So drilling the hole from the buttom of the fuselage could work.

There’s a seam showing at the sides in fron of the wings that I don’t know if it’s ugly or not. But I think they just did a lazy method. I can’t decide if it’s something that would bug me or not. I’ll probably do a test fit to see how it looks and maybe decide after checking out the battroid images to see if it’s a consistent seam there

Yeah, that is exactly what they do. I didn’t want the seams, so I went the c-clamp route.

Progress!!!

because I don‘t like large decals, I masked the VF-22. How to make easy masks? Tape the decal sheet to a clear piece and have fun.

Then peel it off and stick it to the plane.

I did some progress on the F14 too (seen in the back here.

And I worked on the vf-1…

The chinese reprinted decal sheet is good for the small decals, but the large one are hardcore. It took me literally one hour to apply Minmay, as the decal was super thick and sturdy.

will do the rest tomorrow and then the vf-1 will be finished. After that I will get the vf-22 and F-14 done. Then the VF-19.
