derex3592 Posted January 11 Posted January 11 (edited) Huzzah!!! 😁...... and on that momentous note.....I am now pleased to announce that.... now we have a battleship gentlemen! Primary hull painting DONE! (and gloss coated with Alclad Klear Kote). Definitely more user friendly to me these days than that Tamiya TS-13. Edited January 11 by derex3592 Quote

Chas Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Work on the Bronco II continues. Base coat, panel lines and decals done. Surprisingly the 42 year old decals held up perfectly after a coat of gloss Mod Podge - 0 breakage! Next it was time to dirty her up a bit. One of my favourite things about anime mecha is the fact that, because they are imagined, there is a lot more freedom in weathering them. Here is a first pass with an oil dot filter. You can see the difference between the fuselage which has the filter and the engines without: And here the engines have been done: Next up some selective paint chipping. Not sure which technique I'll use for that yet. I must not fear. Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. Quote

Papa Rat Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Getting closer. Just finishing up some brush painting details and waiting for some gloss, a few decals and onto the next build. The IMS Terror Mirage. Quote
LocusPocus Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Hope everyone had an exceptional holiday! Have enjoyed following the progress happening on everyone’s projects. Had to put time aside for the kids Kitty Rocket. That done, moving on to transforming a 3.99 bargain marvel fig into something more. At the moment it’s Scarlet Johayase. I am a bit apprehensive about the hair and what to sculpt it with 🤷🏼, maybe helmeted but resisting……any advice on sculpting hair would be a godsend (looking at either sculpy or greenstuff?). Quote

LocusPocus Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Thanks @pengbuzzi will try that first did not think of that. It’ll probably get ugly for a while but will try to recreate those locks. Quote

MechTech Posted January 13 Posted January 13 @Urashiman Woo hoo! 500 pages!!! @Papa Rat Those FSS builds are looking awesome! @derex3592 Your "Texas" is looking good! Nice n clean (so far before the rust)😉 @Chas That's cool! That's the first Bronco I've seen as a kit. Even cooler since my son and I recently finished watching "Orguss". What was with that ending!🥺 @LocusPocus Cool kitty ship! Gives me an idea for a "Muppets" skit - "Cats in Space!" 🤣 "Scarlet Johayase" looks like a very scary fembot right now!🥺 - MT Quote

Papa Rat Posted January 14 Posted January 14 (edited) @MechTechThanks so much. Means a lot. 😊 Fished up my second 1/100 IMS MH. This one is the Schpertor. KOG. I also got a couple pointers on taking photos on my phone. Not too shabby. I love the design. There are a few other versions of this build that I may visit someday. Great build and the paint looks smooth Thanks! I’m learning that most of these FSS builds call out for some fancy paints. Lots of pearl shimmery stuff and gloss. I’m still on the hunt for that elusive Gaia Star Bright Gold but settling for a mix of basic Mr color gold with some clear orange mixed into it. I’m having a blast experimenting with freestyle paint mixing. Feels similar to my kid making a “potion” out of random household materials and food coloring. lol Edited January 14 by Papa Rat Quote
Urashiman Posted January 14 Author Posted January 14 (edited) I went into the basement today and looked at my never ending stash and had that tingling. That tingling you get in your fingers when you want to build something. So I touched the boxes and was like … wait a second. I went upstairs without a box and checked the top of my shelf. There are still three kits that are in the works and need finishing. “okay mister; no new kits until theseいう are done.“ is what I said to myself. So yeah, these still need finishing. I can get an easy win with the F-14. It only needs decals and then done. I decided to not add ordnance. I`d never be fully satisfied no matter how I do it. The VF-171 needs masking and then airbrushing metal and black highlights. After that decals. The VF-1 needs priming. So I did that. Primed most of the VF-1 parts today. I will be adding decals to the F-14 later today. Wish me luck Edit: I just saw a weird brown box saying „RC Boat“. I was intrigued … looked inside. Another forgotten project discovered again. Well … I obviously get distracted easily. Another one to finish then. Edited January 14 by Urashiman Quote

tekering Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Loving the Schpertor, Bruce! You continue to knock 'em out of the park. 👍 Test-fitting painted parts, removing the last of the masking tape... 🫣 Damn. 🤕 I don't think I scrubbed or sanded these resin parts enough before applying the primer. Three layers of paint peeled off in an instant! 😓 Quote

This is going to look amazing once it’s finished though. That blue is beautiful. So with resin you need to sand all or most surfaces for primer to stick? Is the surface just too slick otherwise? It'll look a little brighter after a couple matte topcoats, but panel-lining and decals have to come first... 17 minutes ago, Papa Rat said: So with resin you need to sand all or most surfaces for primer to stick? Is the surface just too slick otherwise? It's mostly the mold release agent, which requires a little soap or alcohol to remove... but traditional resin kits (especially Moscato's) sometimes have very smooth surfaces, and a little light sanding makes a world of difference. Even so, paint tends to pool along the edges if too much is applied, so many thin layers is best. Quote
Papa Rat Posted January 14 Posted January 14 @tekering I’m excited to see more. One of my goals this year is to do my first FSS resin build. Currently looking around for something I like design wise and also something I can afford. I have a ton to learn and will be bugging all of you on the forum for advice. Quote

Three layers of paint peeled off in an instant! 😓 Don't be too hard on yourself tekkering; resin is notorious for doing this crap! I had a resin Ambassador-class Enterprise in the 90's (before Ertl issues theirs) that no matter how long or how many times I soaked it in bleach and hot water and scrubbed until my fingers were sore, the paint would just slip right off after drying! Krylon, rustoleum, etc for primer, none of it made a difference! Even a couple of years ago with a resin mod kit for my Ertl-issue USS Reliant, the paint had issues and smelled like mold release after extensive scrubbing and soaking in harsh chemicals. Quote

Three layers of paint peeled off in an instant! 😓 AAAAARGH!!! I hate when that happens! I recommend that my resin kits (heck, ANY resin kits) be scrubbed with an old toothbrush and rubbing alcohol prior to painting. Thoroughly. It's a very effective degreaser. Also, if I don't remove the masking right after painting, I will lightly run a sharp blade over the mask line and peel the tape diagonally to avoid it pulling up paint. I'm sure you know this Ted, but others may not, and if I can save them a few tears, so much the better. Edited January 14 by captain america Quote

I have more than a few kits that are off waiting in dark corners to be opened and a few that are ready for paint and just waiting for some real free time to get that big step going. Urashiman Posted January 14 Author Posted January 14 (edited) Nice stuff @tekering @Big s yeah… I feel you. decal time. For the Macross F-14 I got „cheap“ Chinese decal reprints. Cheap not because they where cheap, but because of the print quality. I am only going to use the macross related decals, the rest will be done by GWH decals. I drenched those decals in mark setter strong over and over again. It really took a lot of time for them to properly sink into the panel lines. Really sturdy and thick transfer foil. I might wanna go the sand down approach… but… maybe not. then while apply the decals on the vertical stabiliser, I notice I forgot to airbrush the black stuff behind the wings on the fuselage. Will do that tomorrow. The decals ate too much of my concentration. edit: picture with better light and less blurrrrrrrrr Edited January 14 by Urashiman Quote
wm cheng Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Hey @Urashiman that GWH Tomcat is a very nice kit! (one of the best around until the 1/72 Tamiya F-14 came around). I loved how it gave the option for down flaps, slats and even spoilers. Too bad the rear RIO coaming is too narrow and you really have to build it with the canopy closed. Your weathering is looking amazing! Quote

Well, the fine molds did it better, but that one is still unbuild in my basement. Loved the GWH one though. It felt rewarding to build it. And thanks - I tried to emulate the Macross Zero look onto this one. Edit: rinse and repeat … Edited January 15 by Urashiman New pictures Quote
wm cheng Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Weathering looks great! Yes, I have 2 of the FineMolds kits and 2 Hasegawas and now I'm going to be collecting the new Tamiyas all of which haven't been built - looks like I may never get to my old Hasegawa. That's the problem falling in love with this plane and not getting around to building them till a better company puts out a better kit to put the older stuff to shame. I even have all the old Verlinden resin upgrades from the 90s - argh, now with the Quinta 3D printed cockpit controls or MCC nozzles and landing gears with hydraulic lines, it just makes the old stuff laughable.
