505thAirborne Posted December 30, 2025 Posted December 30, 2025 I recently acquired this old Monogram Galactica dirt cheap, I didn't have the funds for the Moebius kit at roughly $150.00 and up plus shipping. This one had some missing parts and a few breaks to it, so definitely an ideal candidate for some customizing. The forward section had a panel missing and as well the front nose section is gone, so I'll have to make some new parts for that. They're in the rough stage but they ought to look really good when finished. While I grew up with the original BSG, my biggest gripe with this design were the flight pods, they always looked under-sized to me, with the help of cardboard, glue, putty, eventually some photo-etch parts and paint, this Galactica eventually will have some beefier looking flight pods and an even more dominating appearance. Just some super quick pics for what I'm jabbering on about. Quote
Thom Posted December 30, 2025 Posted December 30, 2025 @505thAirborne Looks like a nice update coming for the old gal. Are they going to be thru-deck? Quote

electric indigo Posted December 30, 2025 Posted December 30, 2025 @all Looking forward to see your exciting work in the new year! Here's my output for 2025: Quote
Thom Posted December 30, 2025 Posted December 30, 2025 (edited) @505thAirborne Nice. On my desk, the Lighting-C's big wings are coming into their own. And the seat is done. One of the tasks to come is tinting the canopy a clear yellow. I have Alclad Transparent Yellow for that, but dipping in a test piece had it coming out a bit 'pebbled.' I was hoping it would be as easy as dipping it in Klear. I'll experiment a bit, more, thinning certainly as it is a darker yellow straight from the bottle. Time to look for a spare canopy as a mule... Thom Some great builds there @electric indigo! Edited December 30, 2025 by Thom Quote

Papa Rat Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 @electric indigo ✌️that’s a good looking year no doubt. I like the idea of a recap and might post my output too later today. One of my goals this year is to finally purchase a resin kit and will reach out to you for some sage advice. @ThomLooking good. I’m excited to see how the yellow turns out. I have had great results with clear MR color on clear parts. Quote
Papa Rat Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 (edited) So I was taking a look in my photos from this year and I have over 20 builds! That’s way too many to share. Here are a few I am proud of. In 2026 I want to slow down on my output and make my building more refined and raise the bar for myself on quality not quantity. *looks like I’m a huge FSS fanboy. 😊 Edited December 31, 2025 by Papa Rat Quote
derex3592 Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 Well, my choices came down to Mr Color "Russet" or Mission Models WWII "Red Oxide" SO.... I went with Mr Color mostly for the durability, but oh my 😎, it's quiet a bright shade of red! Hobby shop didn't have my go to Tamiya rattle can of Dull Red, which I think is the perfect hull red.... I think I'll mottle this with the Mission Models acrylic and see what we get.... 🤔 I can also report that after 3 hours early yesterday morning ALL 42 50 cal guns are made up for Texas! Basically only a few stair cases left to make and PE is OVER and done with 😁 Quote

Thom Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 @Papa Rat Just back in the hobby and already completed 20 builds! And some real nice ones too! @derex3592 Hope the colors work out for you. Are you weathering it, such as rust and algae? Quote
derex3592 Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 (edited) UPDATE! I just happened to find two Tamiya Dull Red rattle cans in the back of my paint/junk shelf in the garage with juuuust enough left between the two to get a good coat down! YAY! @Papa Rat - That's a LOADED question - Some people paint acyrlics onto the bare brass, I had HORRIBLE results trying that on Titanic a few years back. It just flaked right off when I handled it. Mr. Hobby makes Metal Primer both liquid and spray can but it's next to impossible to find anywhere in the lower 50 nowadays, especially now. I prefer to prime my PE with some kind of metal primer, then paint them once they are on the ship, OR the best way to do it if possible is to build all the PE and put it on the model FIRST, THEN prime and paint everything. Unfortunately, that's not always possible. Any paint should be fine after a coat of primer on PE. @Thom - I don't know yet.....haven't made up my mind. Edited December 31, 2025 by derex3592 Quote

tekering Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 Well, the structure is complete... Now I've got a ton of cosmetic work to do on each of the balconies. 1:64 figures seem an ideal size to establish scale. 👌 Quote

derex3592 Posted Thursday at 06:47 PM Posted Thursday at 06:47 PM Red and black masked and painted! 100%! Now...I have had 2ish years to figure out the shade of gray for the rest of the ship.....and I'm still unsure....😂 Nothing looks right to my eye yet. Going off the new restored high resolution pics off the Battleship Texas Foundation FB page and YouTube videos, it really depends on the sunlight of any given day as to the blue-gray shade this thing appears to be.. 🤔 I know what the "official colors" are but on a 1/350 scale ship it's way to dark. This may be a mix situation and then trial and error more than anything... Quote
MechTech Posted Thursday at 08:49 PM Posted Thursday at 08:49 PM GREAT builds guys! Sorry I haven't been on the boards more. Not much time to get on the internet for "fun", but I have been working behind the scenes a little. To give you an idea, I compeleted ONE whole model in 2025! The Bandai 1/100 MG Zeta Ver Ka - out of the box. Sad. But lots of components for other builds. I'm at least trying for two builds to go to show early this year. @Papa Rat OK, you have to convince me that you are NOT a Five Stars fan boy (even if you got the collection box).😁 More importantly, they all look GREAT! I think you were just sand bagging us with that "I haven't modeled in a long time" comment.😉 @505thAirborne You sir have your work cut out for you (see what I did there)😁 But I know you can do it! @tekering I think you need to see if Toho has any Godzilla movies they are planning on filming. Then you can profit off of it. If not, you have a new storage shed for the back yard😁 @derex3592 Your paint looks great! You are right. The colors change. For that reason, you may want to try some colored panels and shading. It builds depth. Our "Best Of" model two years ago was a also a battleship, 1/350th with insane detail. He also made extensive use of shading to build depth. Kinda like gaming pieces building depth and shade. I hope we all have a HAPPY NEW YEAR fellow styrene heads! - MT Quote

Oh and happy new year to you too! All of those builds are from the past year and a half. That’s when I started building models. No leg pulling. I hope to build less models this year and make the output more dialed in. I hit the ground running when I started building and don’t want burnout. Edited Thursday at 09:55 PM by Papa Rat Quote

Papa Rat Posted Thursday at 09:59 PM Posted Thursday at 09:59 PM (edited) I have a couple builds on bench right now. I just did a test fit on the Tiger Moth from Castle in the Sky anime. And I’m about to prime up the FSS Schpertor. Very excited! Edited Thursday at 10:00 PM by Papa Rat Quote
Thom Posted yesterday at 12:52 AM Posted yesterday at 12:52 AM Good looking color on the hull @derex3592. It think, since so many shades become apparent as you look, that should free you up from trying to find that One Shade That Must Be. From going to model shows, I have yet to see anyone hold up a paint chip to a model and frown. Quote
derex3592 Posted yesterday at 03:11 PM Posted yesterday at 03:11 PM (edited) Primer, pre-shade and painting of the BUFF this morning! Used Vallejo Acrylic Grey surface primer, fantastic stuff! No smell, water based and airbrush straight from the bottle. Also don't know why I don't hear more good things about Mission Models acrylics. They are fantastic! Water based, no smell, NO thinning, airbrush straight from the bottle, dead flat color and soooo easy to put on. Beats Tamiya acrylics by a country mile if you ask me.. 🤔 🙄 Edited yesterday at 04:10 PM by derex3592 Quote
