Newbie Questions on Macross

I am very interested to see how your subbing project for the various shows goes Gubaba. If I only knew anything in translating and making subs I might help but unfortunately I don't have the slightest clue about any of that. Considering I don't have a set of Frontier episodes with subs you project is most intriguing, that as well as having the other shows done as well. I am very upset at Shinsen for stopping after ep.14 of Frontier, because they seemed the best in my opinion, though I hadn't heard of THORA, I may check those out to see the BD rips, but I bet they are pretty big in file size.

Wow this is like the first post I've made in a long time. I am always lurking though.

Well, the first batch (of six) for SDFM is currently being uploaded. I'm about 1/5 of the way through both My Fair Minmay (which is great) and the first volume of the SDFM novelization (which isn't). And boinger just sent me some scans of the photo-manga as well.

Everything's going along...well, a little more slowly than I'd like, but it's getting done.

Because he/she would take a hell of a lot of money (as it should be). Are you willing to pay and share? B))

You mean on my own ? If it's the case, the answer would be probably yes. After all, Seto Kaiba is thinking about it for a scan of Macross II. But being a humble college student still living with my parents, my resources are somehow limited. <_< That's why I was thinking that each Macross fan posting on these forums could contribute to the cause the best they can. But since Gubaba is doing the hard work by himself for free, my idea is not worth discussing anymore.

Not by myself at all...boinger's basically doing the subbing himself, and OptimusX and Xeros are pitching in. jasonc and VFTF1 are working on scanlations. Lynn2009 has done a lot of work on the drama albums. And VF-25 Messiah and Renato have checked over some of my scripts and made lots of corrections.

So yes, I'm doing a lot of the translations and I'm organizing and editing everything, but I'm not everything myself (thank goodness!).

I have an old translation of the photo manga of DYRL. It looks like it was hand-typed in the 80s and then photocopied, long before the internet was a regular thing. Translation is at best... staid, but seems more or less accurate going by the different translations of the DYRL movie. I assume this was something traded/sold at conventions back in the day.

Wow. I've never seen anything like that. The best I ever got was stuff like Animag and the Baycon program. But of course, there was no Macross in those.

I really wish that someone had typed out the scripts for the drama albums, though...those things can be insanely difficult to understand at times.

I remember a couple of years ago someone on Animesuki posted a picsub of the Evangelion Audio Drama "After the End." The entire script was translated into English shown as subtitles while the video showed a picture of whoever was talking at the time. It worked out well, but I'm surprised that it didn't catch on for other audio drama projects.

Unfortunately, the torrent is no longer available on Animesuki as en example. But, if an accurate script for the drama albums did exist, could that be possible?

I've seen that (actually, I downloaded it, so I have it), and I thought it was hilarious.

I'm not talking about an accurate translation of the drama albums, I'm talking about accurate TRANSCRIPTIONS. If I could read the Japanese (instead of having to listen to the same lines dozens of times to figure out what they're saying), I could progress a lot faster.

As for why no one's done it before...I dunno. I suspect it's because the Macross drama albums aren't as rewarding, and usually tend to fall into the "only for the die-hard fan" category.

Also pure volume is a factor: there are something like nineteen full albums, most of them forty-five minutes or longer (some of the Macross 7 ones run well over an hour). It's a lot of work.

But hey, it's something that hasn't been put into English before, so I'm gonna do 'em.

EDIT: Oh, and yes. I think boinger is planning to do some kind of picsub for "Miss DJ." At the very least, we could do some kind of slideshow for them.

Psst.... I've been working on this for ages and ages and still it's in the planning stages, but it is happenning, just moving on very slowly.

Hmmm...you might beat me to that one. I'm going to start translating it as soon as I'm done with "Distantly Fading Memories," but since it's almost as much a MacPlus or Mac7 story as it is an SDFM story, I'll probably wait until I'm done with Mac7 to upload it.

Before I get working on Miss DJ, I would like to fix up my previous fan edits with Chad's DYRL video and Hikuro's M0 episode 1 DVD. Maybe, if I learned a little more about after effects then that would help doing a picto-sub video fan edit, like that evangelion radio show?

Any mention of some kind of "UN Spacy/NUNS Academy" in canon Macross ?

There is this mentioned in the Macross Compendium:

September 24

* Misa Hayase lives in the U.N. Military Officers' Academy housing as the U.N. Wars nears their conclusion.

Millia was an instructor at the Eagles Nest Training Center. Millia was also called Mother Eagle. I think her daughter Moa became an instructor when they were at the stealth cruiser Red Moon commanded by Max where Mylene was born.

Emigration fleet wise West Point Class Macro-Training Base serve as training academy for new recruits.

If "Macross 7 Docking Festival" is to be believed, Milia actually runs a flight school. ^_^

They mention "Eagle Nest Aerial Tactics Center" where Milia was an instructor. That's about it.

Apologies in advance if this has been asked before!

I don't remember Hikaru ever piloting a VF-1A. Yet the Bandai 1/55 has this as an option (and I own one). Was there ever a red themed 1A in SDFM? I know this is his first machine in DYRL, but the colour scheme is different (black tailfins, etc...).

All the mecha info sites I've seen list Hikaru as a pilot for the 1A and that's when specifically checking for the SDFM version, not DYRL.

No, he never had a 1A in the TV show...not even when he was shown piloting a cannon fodder brownie.

Thanks Gubaba! That explains why the 1/55 "Hikaru" type 1A was so much cheaper than the others when I went to Japan recently.

Macross Quarter length : 400m (official Macross Frontier website number) or 450m (Macross Mecha Manual number) ?

What the official site says is it's "equal to a 400m-class medium-sized vessel". Meanwhile, the Official File #1 mentions it and the VF-25S kit manual say it's "approximately 450m" or about 1/4th the size of a carrier. The Official Fanbook says specifically "about 400m". So "450" is probably the actual number while the description can get away with "about 400..."

I chose "approx length 450 meters" on my Macross Mecha Manual website as a compromise between the figures, at least until the Macross Chronicle features the Quarter and we have a final, definitive answer :)

Question:

When a Macross colonization fleet finds a habitable planet, does the fleet (particularly the city and the battleship) stay on the planet permanently to colonize it? Or does the fleet simply leave some citizens and colonizers and go on their way to find other planets?

I always thought it was the former, but Macross 11 got me thinking (since it's still in space even after so many years).

If each fleet is considered to be an independent entity, everyone probably stays to colonize the planet because the escorts are their military. They have to stick around help build it up and defend the civilians from hostile forces. Maybe some of the them move on to other assignments when the colony becomes self sufficient or something, but that could take months to years.

Yeah, that's also what i was thinking. Macross 11 could be just one unlucky fleet, not having found a planet yet after years of space travel.

i wonder how much kaifun has to do with this bad luck... :p

M7 (as of 2047) was wandering for almost 10 years. Frontier wandered around for almost 18 years.

I think the Macross Consortium was just a vaguely defined plot point created to explain Marj Gueldoa's involvement in the Macross Plus OVA. It's a necessary part of the fictional construct of the plot, required to facilitate the building of Sharon, the X-9 Ghost, the bio-neural chip and so forth. Some entity has to be funding, researching and building all this stuff, so a consortium was created just as a backdrop to make the story work. I don't think there's anything more to it than that, though the Macross Chronicle might expand upon it.

Yeah, makes sense. Maybe after the failure of "Project Sharon" members of the Macross Consortium were arrested and court-martialed since the bio-neural chip installed into Sharon hardware was illegal. The Macross Consortium ceased to exist since it members were in jail and therefore never mentioned again in later Macross sequels.

Could the leaders behind the Galaxy Fleet be supporters of what the Consortium was trying to do, or maybe even be a part of it? They may be one only ones who continued their work into the Frontier era.

What we do know is that personnel can transfer assignments. Like Max anf Millia's family who used to live on a Megaroad later on a Steath Cruiser.

Miho Miho was transfered to the Vahalla III when the replacement Battle 7 was undergoing construction.

As for the Macross Consortium I get the feeling these were freelance organization under the NUN's pay.

Marge cleary went renegade when he killed Reymond Marley.
