Still waiting for the gigs, though...

Can pick up a 1gig for about $100: http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDeta..._n=57&WT.mc_t=U

I wonder if anyone is going to make a CF/SD card reader for the PSP? MemoryStick prices are ridiculous.

Can you use that one? I thought it had to be the "Duo" version for it to work with the PSP.

I think it HAS to be the Pro Stick Duo.

yup, regular memory stick will not fit.

Yea, memory sticks are friggin' expensives. And the Duo sticks are even more so.

I paid about $65 for my 512mb card yesterday (a Sanisk one, actually). And that's with my 10% over cost Fry's employee discount. Regular price was $85. An equivelant SD card would cost less than $50 (regular price)

I really wish there was an adapter out there... even if it was some kind of dongle that hangs outside of the PSP (since SD and CF cards obviously wouldn't fit inside the unit. They're just sooo much cheaper than the Memory Stick Duo cards that it would be worth it. I mean, you can get a 1 gig SD card for $80 easily. A 1 gig Duo card will run you $200.

But anyway, even though it was kinda pricey, the decision to buy a 512mb card was a no-brainer for me. Between the MP3 capability, the VERY cool PSP video conversion utility, and the very probable possibility of using it for homebrew games, apps, and emulators in the future, it seemed like a solid investment to say the least.

Yeah, I kind of don't know how Sony expects the Memory Stick or Memory Stick Duo format to stay competetive. Just to own a Sony camera? The only reason I have a Sony camera is because it was a gift from my mother-in-law, and my VAIO PC has a slot for them anyway.

Well, if Memory Stick/Duo is also going to be a format used by the PS3, perhaps other manufacturers besides Sony and Sandisk will make them, and the price went down. I mean, say whatever else you want about the PS2, it did help DVDs become mainstream, especially in Japan.

Still waiting patiently for a 1GB Duo...

That's how I registered my PSX, PSone and PS2. The PS underground is just an added gimick. You get a demo disc and an issue of Official Playstation Magazine usually getting to house/apt in like six months <_< . I usually pass on underground and I still get the demo and OPM anyway.

got mine today and got untold legends.. this things is sweet. love the screen very crisp and easy to see.. I think it feels better than the DS.. the button placement is jsut right for my hands. no problems with burnt and pixels, sticky buttons or flying UMDs... Spiderman 2 looked great and I could see myself picking some movies up for this thing later on as well.

Got my PSP on the 24th and like many who got there's it's freakin sweet! Once I got it home I carefully put a PDA adhesive screen protector over it and fits perfectly. Don't buy the protectors that only has adhesive on the sides and supposedly is just for the PSP like at Best Buy or Circuit City go to a Fry's, Office Depot/Max, Comp USA, Radio Shack etc. and ask for PDA screen protectors. It requires a little trimming here and there but it shouldn't be a problem that's the easy part. Sticking the adhesive to the sucker is a test on patience, and is a bitch. It worked on my GBASP and not a scratch on it.

I bought Lumines last night after an all day exhaustive search for Ridge Racer, the former was a backup and it's a great Tetris-esque puzzle game. I'll search for RR later next month since I'm all tapped out and don't get scratch till then. Thank's Sony :p .

They must have added it recently. It wasn't there when I checked online a few weeks ago.

I wish it was available in stores. And at $160, I might just wait it out until May. We're supposed to start selling them at Gamestop for $150 (+15% discount = $127.50).

There are a lot of people out there who, and probably rightly so, are hesitant to buy the PSP due to quality issues that the original PlayStation and PS2 had, especially with stories of Japanese units having broken analog nubs, sticky square buttons, and dead pixels galore....

Yes, and I'm still one of them. There should be zero tolerance for dead pixels. So far this doesn't exactly want to make me go spend my money on a faulty product.

Dead pixels are a fact of life with LCD screens, occasionally you are going to get them. I bought 2 PSP's, one for myself and one for my brother, niether of them have any QC issues so far, and we have both logged over 30 hours play time since last thursday.

All I can tell you , is from personal experience, I have had a magnificent experience with the PSP so far. I have ripped a few cool DVD videos, loaded up some family photos and a few MP3's to show off it's capabilities to my friends and everyone I have shown agrees that it is a truly magnificent device.

If you are waiting around because some other poeple have had annoying dead pixels, you might as well wait until the next screen technology comes out, because every mass amrketted product with LCD screens has units with dead pixels. I have yet to hear of anyone who bought a PSP and tried to return it due to troublesome dead pixels only to be refused the right to an exchange or refund.

the most recent cool idea I read for using the PSP is to read Scanslated manga and novels. I am going to snag the software tonight and try to load my Berserk Scans onto my PSP, that would be a really cool thing to be able to carry around :)

No, I'm waiting to see what the life span of the PSP is and how Sony's warranty pans out. Dead pixels were not the only issue the PSPs have had so far. Sony's response to a design flaw was not reassuring. So I think waiting is the best thing to do given Sony's track record like with the PS2s and all the hassles from it's initial run.

No problems here with mine and I've been messing around with it since Thursday morning. The PSP is really cool. The screen is awesome. So colorful, sharp and clear. Loaded up about 40 songs, a few videos from Machine Head and Shadows Fall. Need to get some Pantera videos on there next. I also put the Macross 20th Anniversary opening and the opening of Berserk on the PSP. Of course some porn too lol... ah Stacy Valentine....

I bought 4 games for it. Ridge Racer, Darkstalkers, Dynasty Warriors(after I said I wasn't going to buy it...oh well) and Untold Legends. All are really fun and they look great on the PSP screen. The rest of launch games really don't interest me. I was gonna buy Lumines for my wife(since she loves puzzle games) but she wanted Untold Legends instead...go figure.

I can understand people's hesitance about system life, dead pixels, etc. Sony 's track record isn't exactly the greatest. My launch PS2 (SCPH 30001)still works though. Probably one of the few...

I totally agree about recordable UMD's, they need to get on that, apparently they are paranoid about people having a portable piracy device if they do it, at least that is the latest excuse I have heard for them refusing to allow the format to be useful :p

I too still have my both of my launch PS2's, Japanese and American and both have logged hundreds if not thousands of hours of use over the years, both work fine. I know many people have had them crap out, but so far I have had really good luck with my Playstations. I gave my original 1st generation PS1 to my nephew about a year and a half ago, when I talked to him on easter he said it still worked.

I wonder about the system life myself, but since I was investing 270 bucks in a portable system I bought the extended, "Smash it with a hammer and we will still replace it" warranty from EB, so I know I will get at least 2 years out of it :)

Anyhow, I don't own Sony stock or anything, I could care less if anyone else buys one I guess. I am glad I have mine, I have had so much fun just playing around with the features that the 25+ hours I have spent actually playing extremely fun games on it seem like icing on the cake :)

Have any of you guys seen this stuff about internet browsing on it through Wipeout Pure? I got a little walkthrough I need to try out. Supposedly you can go through the update feature in Wipeout Pure and browse the net, message boards and stuff.

I grabbed this off the 1up message boards, no further explanation or links did I see, if I find out more or get out to a local Hotspot to test it I will let you know. Anyhow, here is the messageboard post I copied:

PSP WEB PORTAL

If you have a PSP, set your Primary DNS server to 67.171.70.72 -- I've got a portal of sorts up. Set your secondary DNS to your router so if my IP changes or my machine goes down, you'll still be able to access the internet. Then just fire up Wipeout and head to the downloads section, you should see this:

Those without a PSP, you can still check it out here.

Update: I've added a URL bar to the bottom so you can type in a URL and go wherever you want. Enjoy.

Another Update: All links including launching from the URL bar now use php to put a "toolbar" across the top so you can enter new URLs without returning to the portal. Thanks to MomDad for that.

SO far as I can tell, there are no U.S. UMD's for sale at this time through retail. The first batch of movies is showed a release date of April 19, 2005 according to Amazon.com, there are only like five titles due otu then, xXx, Once Upon a time in Mexico, Hellboy and some other stuff. I read that a second batch of like 12 titles was due out in a month or two after that.

I read that Lion's Gate and Disney had both penned deals with Sony to release movies on UMD so we will probably be seeing some more title announcements in the next few weeks.

Instead of buying movies at $20-$30 a pop, just have your buddy save up for a 512mb or 1gb Memory Stick Duo and a mini USB cable. There's plenty of free software available that can rip the movie out of a DVD as an MPEG-2. Then you can use (the also free) PSP Video 9 to convert the MPEG-2 to mp4, properly name the file so the PSP can recognize it, and even put it on the Memory Stick in the right folder so your PSP can find it.

yeah...i was talking to him about that...he's at times too lazy to do stuff like that...i on the other hand am lazy but will do what needs to be done and all...since we got our systems at the base exchange, there was no games or accessories for the psp...he's working until wednesday and i should get paid by then also so we're gonna head off to bestbuy and possibly gamestop to get what we need...i know for sure i'm gonna pick up darkstalkers and lumines since they're basically the only games i'm gonna play unless namco decides to make a SCIII or special pack with all their old school games like pac man and all...IMO i feel like if you're gonna get a handheld system, you should have at least one puzzle or tetris like game for it...i can still play tetris hours on end without getting tired of it.

btw...i saw a card reader for the ms duo and pro duo...would those be okay for adding stuff onto the memory card?

when i mentioned SCIII i just thought of something...wouldn't it be nice to have the first Soul Calibur game on the psp? i'm sure it'd be easy to put on there since the game is already set with a 6 button configuration...altho it might be hard to switch the game engines... :(

Yeah I am fairly sure from what I have read that the lawsuit is specifically over the 'Dual Shock" technology, I think worst case scenario for Sony is they have to pay the fine, then either pay licensing fees, or they repackage the PS2's with non-dual shock controllers and stop selling Dual shock crap. Best case, they get an overturn on appeal, or a significant reduction in the fines and can work something out with the tech company claiming patent infringement.

It really is a magnificent device, I went and downloaded the PSPphoto program linked from 1up.com site for compiling books and manga last night. I have the entire run of official Berserk Manga from Japan up to date and I downloaded the scanslations up to volume 25 a few months ago I loaded up a couple volumes last night onto some spare room on my memory card, looks pretty cool, however I need to figure out how to reformat them to landscape view so they will be larger images that take up the full screen. Little details, overall the functions of the thing are fantastic!

That's a solution Sony doesn't want.

And Immersion is likely not going to turn down a large license check.

Ok so I cracked.

Got one at Wally world.

Picked up Darkstalkers and Ridge Racer.

Hot damn this thing is awesome.

Need a 1gb memory stick duo though. :(

I cracked on Sat. Got Lumines, and Darkstalkers. RR is sold out everywhere for me. Lumines is so fracken addictive it's funny! Darkstalkers....not so much but it's okay. I want RR!!! or GT-something, I need a racing game!!(NFSU and Wipeout don't do it for me.)

Good place to get Memory sticks is camera shops. A memory stick duo is a memory stick duo is a memory stick duo. ;)
