  1. Hehe.. Tempted to ask if there's a control style that puts the throttle up and down on the shoulder buttons like Ace Combat, but that's not a horrible thing to change. I know the DYRL pack in used R2/L2 as rudder in one mode, so I assume that's similar?
  2. Basically the reason I like the 19P is that it's the only VF-19 we have any hope of customizing. I never even saw the anime it's from, so I've got no attachment to the design aside from it's the least gaudy VF-19 we can buy. I have never understood why the intake covers on all the others are ridiculous colors, while the covers of practically every valkyrie ever have always been gray. I might keep one in original markings, but any others I plan to get are likely to get stripped bare and have new markings put on.
  3. There was absolutely no reason they had to "justify" the price of the super parts. Look at the speaker pack that came out for the old VF-25G, and it had even less in the box than the VF-171EX packs if you didn't include the wings (note: I'm under the impression that it only had the fold booster and speakers. If that's wrong, then please correct me there. ) Bandai just doesn't like including more than one option for anything in the same box.
  4. Yeah, you have to rememeber.. space is usually dark. Without a local light source to reflect off those markings, they wouldn't show up anyway. The big glowy engines, on the other hand, would be a dead giveaway. Really, by the time the VF-17 went into service, stealth had nothing to do with the shape of the aircraft, or even the color. I mean think about it. Nora's SV-51 was hot pink with gold stripes, and when Shin first encountered her in an F-14, they claimed it was a stealth fighter, because they didn't pick up anything. The only reason he got anywhere near hitting her was because she got cocky, and decided to get within visual range, and he was able to draw a bead on her for a cannon shot. When you've got weapons that work beyond visual range, you don't have to fool the human eye anymore, just the sensors. I actually never understood why anyone would paint a spacecraft black. Sure, it's great for hiding. But if you fly with a group? That's just asking for collisions. And with twinkling stars everywhere, blinking anti-collision lights might not help much. I always figured the bright wing stripes were for friendly ID more than anything else.

I haven't verified this myself yet, but someone did post a guide to setting up a Japanese PSN account for accessing the included download of the old PSX DYRL game that came with the bluray DYRL box. You might have to do some translation, but I don't believe the accounts themselves are locked to any region's IP. Now, whether that means you'll be able to use a non-Japanese credit card for purchasing any DLC remains to be seen. I know Sega is picky about who can buy credits for PSO2 (you need a Japanese credit card, a Japanese address, and have to answer a bunch of kanji captchas to spend any money on that game). Whether you can just go on the Japanese PSN and buy things with a credit card from another country, I can't say.
  6. You know? I don't even care about the ankles. I'll happily take more ball joints if they can make a version that fixes the shape of the entire fuselage, and gives us hips that have some actual movement in them. I've mentioned it before, but it's not even the gullet. It's the fact that the nose is sitting so high that it's not even facing into the airstream. Every piece of lineart has the nose level with the center of the feet and wings, which the VF-19 pulls off perfectly, but the YF-19 never even came close to achieving. Anyway, my YF-19 came to me totally trashed (shoulders entirely shattered, same plastic as the VF-0), so I've been waiting for a new one since I got it. Since it's already pretty much ruined, I've been hacking away at the nose to see if I can rework the Z-fold section to get the nose looking better. So far, I've filed out the lower edge of the forward nose enough to drop it down about 5 degrees, and filed the area just ahead of the front gear doors to let the chest flap sit at a lower angle to match. All I really need to do is rebuild the upper fuselage to fill the wedge shaped gap left along the spine. What I've really been considering though is just using Shapeways to make entirely new pieces for the nose. It'll depend on how hard the nose is to take apart though, since I'd rather not make any pieces I don't have to. Thing is, I keep delaying doing anything, since I'm hoping they'll just announce a new YF-19 and save me the trouble.
  7. .... I couldn't understand a thing they were saying, but I can't wait. Particularly due to a certain someone apparently getting ahold of one of the henshin devices.
  8. The decals look great... except the Zola patrol group wasn't associated with the UN, were they? Also, I will never understand people's love for slapping corporate logos all over military craft. Yes, you might see them on a prototype, which is what the YF-19 and YF-21 were.. but you're not going to get a stupid engine label plastered all over an in-service aircraft. Heck, that's half the reason I'm tempted to strip all the markings off my VF-171. It looks like a flying corporate billboard.
  9. Honestly, I like how semi-real they look... but I don't get why they mixed high and low-vis kite markings. If they'd used the low-vis ones on the chest, it would look much better, I think.
  10. I don't think that's even paper.. it looks more like it's molded out of clay, or something.
  11. No, that's honestly loads better than a 2 second window to buy one at standard price. Because, you know.. the kits are EASILY buyable. After all these years, HLJ still has them in stock, and they still get restocked. They might be a pain to build, but it'd do a ton ot take the edge off the frustration of trying to buy Bandai's stupidly tiny productions in 1/60.

There's already the DLC bonuses that people get with the limited edition, so we knew those were coming. Considering the potential difficulty in offering entirely new aircraft through DLC, I'd expect anything beyond the limited edition stuff to just be repainted special versions of existing planes (like the Idolmaster versions of Ace Combat 6 aircraft which were just paint and stat tweaks of existing planes), but I suppose only time will tell.
  13. You seem to have this funny idea that Bandai likes making sense with their Macross product marketing.
  14. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if that's reversed. Not that I don't want the YF-29 reissue first, but this is the first issue of the super parts. You'd think they'd get the parts out for people who already bought one during the first issue.

Woot! Payment sent! Time to warm up the PS3
  16. They aren't gouging the plastic... the plastic is gouging them. Actually though, if you don't move things in the right order, it's really easy to smash the legs into some of the sharper corners on the torso, and ding them up.
  17. So, a word of advice about these.. If your shoulder covers tend to pop off, don't try and fix it. I actually did more harm than good to the shoulder trying to get it to attach correctly. It's back on, but now that forward triangle piece with the tiny trap door is very obviously modified. I wound up sealing the joint with super glue, and filing it smooth. I would try and just smooth over the entire piece, rescribe the separation lines, and paint over it, but the plastic isn't actually black. The annoying part though.. in the process of trying to fix that shoulder, I managed to ding up the paint on both chest cannons. Fortunately for me, I happened to have a bottle of acrylic paint that is a near perfect match, but I'd like to go strip it off and use enamels for extra durability, so I might see if I can find a match. Tamiya "Light Gray" was a little too dark, but I have a small bottle of Testors/Pactra "Light Gray" acrylic that matches. I just need to check if that color is one of the standard Model Master colors I have. Edit: darn this stupid glitch.. probably a browser problem, but the quick reply never saves paragraph breaks.
  18. Yeah, the old F7U was notoriously bad for carrier ops. Horribly underpowered, and the engines were unreliable on top of that. Apparently a sizable number were lost on failed catapult launches because the engines flamed out. The ludicrously high nose gear and crazy angle of attack needed for landing didn't help either. What's actually amusing.. my dad owns a couple 1/72 kits of the Cutlass, and has compared some part sizes with the idea in mind to make a next-generation version of sorts, sort of a 70s era revamp of the design. If the internal ducting in the kit is accurate, it looks like you could literally just take out the old engines, and replace them with modern F-18C/D turbofans with very minor changes. I always loved the design of the prototype, which had an actual streamlined cockpit, but that huge bubble nose ruined it.
  19. Hehe, I grew up in Hanford, know the feeling. The superbugs will be around for a long time yet though, they're only talking about replacing the old model hornets. Maintenance costs for those oldies are skyrocketing, because all the focus is shifting to the E/F/G model hornets. Gonna be really weird when/if the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds both start flying the F-35... they've had the 16s and 18s for so long now.

Given the resemblance, I'm tempted to assume it's going to be Aisha's older sister. Though, the way that reddish scene is drawn, I half thought that was supposed to be Misa.
  21. No joke, but they're talking about Lemoore, not Fresno. Fresno's ANG base has had F-16s for a long time. Anyway though, they're talking about legacy hornets, F-18C/D models, which the JSF will replace eventually. Not going to replace the superhornets anytime soon, especially not at Lemoore, since I think that's basically the west coast headquarters for superhornet operations and training. I think someone in congress has been trying to float the idea of a multi-service base, consolidating the Fresno ANG and Lemoore NAS aircraft into one area. Makes some sense, due to the land-locked nature of KFAT, and the relatively remote location of LNAS, but I don't expect it to happen any time soon.

Holy crap... do they seriously go back to SW1? Or is it just a flashback? (hah)
  23. Is it just me, or does Togusa just look not quite young enough compared with the rest of them? Also, while the Japanese voices are changing, any word on whether they'll keep the English cast the same? I don't know if they're in quite the same demand as the Japanese cast, but some of them are pretty prolific on the voice acting circuit as well.
  24. I still love this particular topic from io9 a few years back, where they were discussing what the next screwball monster movie should be. At one point, someone brings up the fact that they're running out of monsters... so they should start combining animals with forces of nature. Hilarity ensues. http://io9.com/5960981/syfys-next-hybrid-monster-should-be-bearantula Also, Mansquito always needed a sequel: Miss Quito.
  25. The D just had the disadvantage of having a few angles where it just didn't look good at all. Anything from above and in front mostly, because the entire ship disappears behind that huge saucer. I have a love/hate relationship with the E... partly because I love the ship to death.. but also because I spent the better part of several years working on a replacement model for the original polygonal travesty in the old Bridge Commander PC game. You never grow to know a ship quite like you do when you build a polygon model, and then draw each of the hull panels onto the textures by hand. As far as the saucer separation goes though... yes, they tweaked the design for Nemesis, but they also based the tweaks to the neck around existing panel lines. I would bet if they really tried, it could still separate. Problem is, the lower section's got no propulsion, so even if it did separate, you're probably throwing back to the original series, where the separation was an emergency measure to save the crew in case the warp drive went kerblooie. The extra impulse drive on the D made both pieces capable of operating independently, but besides being a plot device, that made sense because you'd want to be able to get all those civilians in the saucer to safety if you needed to fight with the drive section, which had most of the weapons. No such problem with the E, since they pretty much ditched the civilian population from what I understand. No civilians to evacuate, no need to ditch the saucer for fighting.
