Star Trek Into Darkness, in theaters May 17, 2013
Chronocidal replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Not sure I remember entirely correctly, but I think the refit 1701 had vertical and horizontal components to the core. I remember at least one scene involving the vertical core, but then there also being a long segment running the length of main engineering. And really, if you're running the core lengthwise down the keel of the ship, it should be relatively easy to just eject the whole thing directly backwards, which is what I think happened in the reboot.- 1020 replies

Chronocidal replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Actually, considering all that went on during TNG, the D probably has the absolute worst record of all of them. I'd love to see how many times that ship was actually destroyed over the course of the series. Off the top of my head, it blew up three times in All Good Things, a couple during that energy transfer mishap with the Romulans, at least one blew up when all the parallel versions showed up in one spot of space.. it definitely blew up when the Enterprise C escaped.. and let's not forget the "once a commercial break" explodaganza involving the time loop, which was I think four times on-screen, but supposed to be closer to 20 in-universe.- 1020 replies

Much as I would hate to see another Enterprise axed this year, I'm plenty happy saying goodbye to the first JJprise. I just hope when she gets reborn, she's more recognizable. And hopefully, not so freaking huge... the lack of any sense of scale, be it ships, transporter tech, or galactic travel distances, really screwed with suspension of disbelief in the first movie.- 1020 replies

I just hope this game adapts a more standard use for the right analog stick. I don't exactly want to say they should just use the same controls as Ace Combat games since these will obviously have more functions to account for, but your standard trigger based throttle and rudder controls would also help. Ideally, they'd just let us customize the control layout, but I guess I shouldn't hold my breath. Long as we get a camera control, it shouldn't be too bad. Being an RPG-ish game might help that, since you'll probably have folks who just want to fly around looking at the pretty scenery. I actually am looking forward to the RPG type progression though, since besides the story, it gives you something to work toward in terms of available valks. As long as the upgrade/research/material gathering/etc isn't too tedious, it might be interesting trying to unlock the valk development trees without a translation guide. Turning in a pile of random junk you've picked up and finding out you just unlocked some new feature can be fun.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
Chronocidal replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
Only problem with the whiskers.. in 1/72? Those things would be the size of salamis sticking out of the nosecone. They're huge. I understand wanting to make a plane look "modern," or more "realistic," but in this case they just look out of place. Not to mention they'd probably get snapped off by the legs. Did any of the lineart have anything like that? I mean, there are a multitude of standard antenna types that many aircraft have, but you don't see those on the various valks, and it makes plenty of sense when you consider the leap in technology. I just hope they're some artifact of the rapid prototyping process. At least if they do wind up in the kit, they'll be really easy to remove. -
Yep, definitely. I think you'd actually be hard pressed to find any non-V.2 1/60ths outside of something like ebay, or other online auctions, and they shouldn't really be anywhere near that price.

Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII

I love how someone in the comments pointed out that their instrument panel looks like it has a car stereo faceplate glued to it. -
Eh, no worries, congrats on picking up a sweet deal. I'll just wait for the 19P to hit discount at HLJ before grabbing the rest of my squadron. Depending on how popular it has (or hasn't been), it might be anywhere from a few months to a year.

Wow, yeah, where from? If they're that low already, I might need to go grab a couple more.

I guess what I'm thinking is that Luke was only told that they were separated and hidden as children. He doesn't know that Leia doesn't remember her real mother. Neither of them knows the circumstances of their birth, so he might be under the impression that Leia did know their real mother at some point. I always thought Luke was just digging for hints about what his real mother was like from someone who he thought may have known her. I see what you mean, though, as far as why Luke would ask her if she remembered her real mother, if she never knew she was adopted. I don't think it's a huge leap to think that Bail Organa remarried though, in which case she would have had a step mother, and probably still considered Breha her real mother. But yeah, his goal in the whole thing was obviously trying to lead her to that conclusion. I've just never had trouble assuming she had always considered her adoptive parents as her real parents. Given they were trying to hide her, it would make sense to keep up the illusion. I see why it's a stretch, but I guess my point is there are too many unknown factors to actually consider it a serious problem with the prequels. I can think of a few ways things could have worked for it to still make perfect sense, you just have to assume a bunch of things we never saw.

You have to remember how little they both knew about their parents. Neither of them knew when (or even if to some extent), their actual mother died, but Leia thought she did. For all Luke knew, she could have been their real mother, with Luke being separated from them before he got to know her. If she hadn't died when Leia was still young, she may have eventually revealed to her that she was adopted, but it looks like she never learned that from her parents. Given her status in the Senate, the less she knew the better, so they may have never intended to tell her at all.

You know, if he could make that part, it might kill two or three birds with one stone. Besides being required to lock into the hip bar, that piece also serves as a secondary attachment point for the actual intakes. Considering that he's already made new intakes for the VF-0D mod kit, making that piece would let him fine-tune the connection with the intakes.

Neither of them actually remembered their real mother. Luke grew up with his aunt and uncle so he already knew his parents were gone, but Leia didn't learn she was adopted until Luke brought it up at that point. Bail Organa's wife was supposed to have died a few years after they adopted her, so that's who Leia was thinking of.

I would say that's an option, but unfortunately, Yamato went back to their old tricks of gluing screw covers over everything. I looked at what it would take to remove the ankle sections, and you'll have to take the entire leg apart somehow. Unless you just want to remake the ball itself, which actually might not be too hard... Hmm. If you could mold a brand new ball for the joint, and get that to fit into the foot socket, you might be in luck. Problem is, we don't know what the problem really is. We don't know if the ball is misshapen, or if it's the socket, or even both. If you really want to fix this problem, you might need to make an entirely new foot section.

I actually hadn't opened my sets to look at them yet, I might have to dig them out later.

I'm actually really hoping we get the VF-17T... not necessarily for Sound Force, but I want that orange and white trainer we see in Macross Plus. Milia's I might grab as well depending on the color, but I wonder if it'll even happen.

I actually did try that, mine would never come off the ball. After realizing what a pain it would be to get them back on, I gave up trying, and just resigned to leave them in fighter mode forever.

Nope, I've never felt the urge to destroy it that far. I saw the spring pins involved in the toe and heel joints, and decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Ok, pictures this time to describe exactly why this is such a stupid problem. Here's what pose I can get if I push my 19's ankles to their natural mechanical limit. This looks pretty darn good, like a gerwalk pose should look. The nose isn't digging into the ground, and it's perfectly stable on any surface I've tried (carpet, desk, etc.) Here's what the ankle looks like while in that position. This doesn't look the least bit unreasonable. What I mean by the natural mechanical limit of the joint is how far a ball joint should move, before the post collides with the rim of the socket. Long story short? The ankle doesn't work that way. If the ankle were actually shaped correctly, there shouldn't be anything stopping it from actually reaching those limits, just like every other ball joint Yamato has ever made. Whether it's caused by lousy casting, misshapen plastic caps on the ball joints, or some overlooked issue involving differing stresses and material properties issues with the composite joint, the joint doesn't work correctly. If it were actually a true spherical shape? This wouldn't be a problem. The only conclusion I can come up with as to why the ball changes tension all over the place is that either the ball or socket is just flat out misshapen. I should also add.. they're not consistently misshapen. Playing with the ankles further on that particular VF-19F, I discovered that the left and right ankles had completely different ranges of motion. The left ankle can be pushed back much easier than the right, and is tighter overall, but the right ankle is very loose in the front half, and I can push the toe so far up he could do a decent crouching position in battroid.

Ok, I know we've gone over this a bunch, but there's one KEY issue about these ankle joints that everyone seems to forget. They are BALL joints. Ergo, ROUND. They should not loosen or tighten when moved in any direction inside their range of motion. The very fact that they have to be "stretched" means that they aren't actually round. THAT is the problem with them. When we talk about "stretching" them, we're not talking about going beyond their limits. We're talking about pushing them to where their limits SHOULD be. The fact that they can't do it? That's ENTIRELY a design problem. Know what I want to see? A statement from Yamato's engineers who designed them, laying out exactly what the ankle's range of motion SHOULD be. I might actually go looking through the instructions for examples of how far they do it. This issue is pretty much impossible to even solve without input from someone who helped design the ankle, just because everyone has different expectations of how far they think the ankles should move. I'm going to have to dig out my camera and do some comparisons again.

All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!
Chronocidal replied to Keith's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
When Asshorizon hits $20 or less I might give it another look. The idea of paying them for rail shooter levels still makes me think they should pay me to play it. However, I would like to see how moddable the game engine is, since it'd be a piece of cake to rework it into something that isn't the air combat version of a blood and guts splatter fest. Strike Suit Zero though is an instant buy. Time to reinstall steam.- 6890 replies

I'm anxiously awaiting the time when the 19P gets put on sale, because I'll probably buy three more to customize. Despite the higher price, I've got more of the VF-19 than any other valk aside from the VF-1 (6 now ). Even with the problematic ankles, it's just a work of art.

Heh.. here's a funny idea. Has anyone tried some of those little foam covers a lot of earbud headphones come with? They might not be very good at gripping things, but they're plenty soft. I'm starting to think fabric covered tips might be the best option to keep from damaging anything.

The SMS pilots would look awesome too if they weren't painted by blind monkeys. Bandai has a long way to go to catch up to Yamato's standard pilots.

I think some people are afraid of the utter hatred and loathing that at least half the star wars fanbase will deliver no matter what decision they make about anything. I don't blame them. I wouldn't want to be in Lucas's shoes after all the rage the prequels produced. The films will most likely generate a metric crapload of money no matter how they turn out, but it might not be enough to convince someone who's comfortable with their existing portfolio. Seems like he'd be a fitting choice though in some ways.. the latest Trek stuff felt more like Star Wars anyway.

Looking forward to the results. Depending on the shade, I might try the alumide. I'm not that picky about it matching perfectly, I just love seeing how things fit together. I'd probably just paint details by hand anyway. Also, as far as the "ear" sensors are concerned, it's tough to change the overall shape of those since they have to mesh with the upper body of the valk in fighter mode. But it'd be easy enough to drill out the fronts and install some sensor lenses there. What I'm really anxious to see is how the laser pivot works out. Looks like it's supported nicely, but I don't see how it'll be held in really, unless it's all by friction with the sides of the slot.
