Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!
sketchley replied to Valkyrie Driver's topic in Movies and TV Series
@ the OP of the question: SMS isn't the first one to do this. Galaxy Fleet did it with the YF-27. So, in some ways its SMS merely copying what their rivals have already done. I'll repeat what I said earlier: in space. Discussions on fuel capacity are meaningless when talking about thermonuclear reaction engines in an atmosphere. So, please consider my comments on wing loads and stresses in that context. I've already addressed the conformal tanks on the Sv-51/52 earlier. ... and only the FAST Packs on the back the engine nacelles on the VF-1 have been indicated as coolant stores. The other ones are fuel. -

I'd like to agree with you completely, but... for the life of me, I can't recall seeing manoeuvring verniers on the Sv-51. So, even assuming that the Sv-51 could be retrofitted for space use by swapping engines, there still needs to be extensive modification to add vernier thrusters and their fuel tanks on the airframe - which eats into the available space for fuel for the thermonuclear engines. The other thing that dawned on me is that although there is a lot of space on the wings to strap on fuel tanks, the extra weight there both degrades the rotational flight performance and increases the amount of fuel spent recovering from rotational manoeuvres (apologies if I'm using the wrong words here). Whereas, because the VF-1's additional fuel stores are clustered around its central mass, the effects of the additional weight are less significant (another angle to appreciate here is the stresses on the airframe - specifically wings and wing roots - is greater on the Sv-51. So, its cost-performance is also reduced). -

I may be mixing it up with the thermonuclear engine equipped version of the Octos, but I remember reading somewhere about the Unified Forces using some of the Anti Unification Alliance Variable Craft during the first interstellar war. If memory serves, I don't believe it was a case of making 'new' war machines, but a case of maximizing on 'war booty'. With the Octos, there was a rather significant number of them, too. To be honest, there aren't that many facts to go on. So, even though the Sv-51 is remarkably larger than the VF-1, we don't know where the internal fuel tanks are, nor how large they are. The only facts we really have is that the Sv-51 *needed* 2x to 4x additional drop-tanks to perform a short combat sortie - and that's even with being launched and recovered close to a battle field! The official setting info implies that a non-FAST Pack equipped VF-1 has similar operational restrictions, in space. On the other hand, cutaway drawings for the engine nacelle FAST Packs for the VF-1 show that they are mostly fuel tanks and so forth. So, while I agree that the Sv-51 would have larger internal fuel tanks, I disagree that that alone is more than that carried by a FAST Pack equipped Valkyrie. Yeah... those media tend to ignore the official setting description of the VF-1 FAST Packs. It's not until we get to Macross 7 that we start to see aerospace Super Parts (for those that don't: FAST Packs that can be used in both space and atmosphere). But if you put enough thrust on it, even a brick can fly! -

It depends where the vehicle is being used. In short, the Sv-52 would have the same endurance problems as the VF-1 does... in space. (I thought that the regime was obvious, as I went on about FAST Packs. And as the (original) VF-1 FAST Packs can only be used in space... ) -

If memory serves, the first time I came across the Sv-52 was in Macross Chronicle, and the only 'statistical' data that accompanied it was that the conventional turbine engines were replaced with thermonuclear ones. Going back to the original question: as the Sv-51 suffers from a limited fuel load, the Sv-52 would too. Therefore, the VF-1 is still better because it has the capability to be extensively developed with FAST Packs and Super Parts for increased endurance (range + time on the battlefield). While the Sv-51 does have something akin to Super Parts, there are significantly more, and larger ones for the VF-1 (I'm not disagreeing that new packs could be developed for the Sv-52, the problem is that due to the transformation mechanism, there isn't as many places to mount them on the airframe!). -
Solo: A Star Wars Story, in theaters May 25, 2018
sketchley replied to Dobber's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think it really depends on the era the film was made in, and the production team behind it. For example, I remember seeing a making-of of Back To The Future 2 (1989), and they said that because the original (1985) was made in the era where they didn't save anything, they had to rebuild all of the sets and props. Of course, the bigger sets are generally broken up or sold as-is to another production (Dark City -> Matrix, Blade 2 -> Stargate Atlantis, etc.). With regards to the production team, Stanley Kubric destroyed (or had destroyed) all alternative cuts, shots, whatever of his (older?) movies. So... my money is on 'the mouse' saving those sets (or what parts of them they can), as they are plugging those films out at a rate of one per year. Speaking of that... does anyone know if they have a multi-year lease on one (or more) stages at Pinewood (or wherever)? If so, then that's pretty good proof that they are preserving sets. -
Thanks! In fact, it was inspired by the Su-25 Frogfoot!

Thanks for the kind words. Positive feedback definitely gives an incentive to produce and reveal more! Finished the 3rd sheet in the series. Direct linky: https://studiootaking.deviantart.com/art/CFs-Generation-2B-Master-File-Chronicle-708803627 Looking at the time-date stamp... gosh, has it really taken 11 months!?! And here I was envisioning this project as something that I'd be able to whip out in a couple of months! I guess that's a testament to how busy FT work and children are... T.T;;; Hmm... I guess I didn't post about the 2nd set in this topic. Well, here's the direct linky for that, too: https://studiootaking.deviantart.com/art/CFs-Generation-2A-Master-File-Chronicle-663269695

Speaking of kids and toys - it really depends on the kid. My 3 play with toys a lot - a lot more than with their tablets or the PS3. However, the toys each one prefers differs, and what their interested in playing with each week varies. E.g.: my son consistently plays with Lego. My daughters have, until recently, been playing with Sylvania Families and other things. However, in the past week or two, they're all playing with Lego again. Go figure! So... all this talk of TRU, is making me want to take the kids there tomorrow! LOL Unlike some of the experiences that have been posted here, they really enjoy it. Especially the double sided aisle of Lego! LOL It's a shame that Macross stuff is few and far between, and the store is generally more expensive than others...

Completed: Macross Chronicle Worldguide 28A: Uniforms: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRworldguide/MCRworldguide.php Surprisingly, this one was more insightful than I was expecting it to be. It's also interesting to contrast the various character designer's interpretation of the uniforms (e.g. how and where the rank insignia is displayed).

And completed: Macross Chronicle Technology 16B: Spacesuits: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRtechnology/MCRtechnology.php This one is a bit thin on the hard details, but interesting nonetheless. Thankfully, it clarifies (more or less) what the initial SDFM era spacesuits/pilot suits are.

Completed: Macross Chronicle Technology 16A: Spacesuits: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRtechnology/MCRtechnology.php Quite a bit of insight in this one. I especially liked how well thought out the technology progression and limitations are (we gots OTEC, but even then...). I kept marvelling at how well thought out this corner of the Macross universe is. Looks like I'll have to revise the RPG stats on pilot suits, too, as the ones that appear in SDFM probably shouldn't be considered to be anti-G suits (light ones at best). And it makes me wonder if the SDFM VF pilots could handle sustained 9 G manoeuvres!

I think Mr. Lucas's schooling (or innate talent) in visual design also played a part. I'm not saying these new directors (or other ultimate decision makers) don't, but Mr. Lucas himself had an eye for the things that would stand out and be unique in SW. Perhaps his design choices were influenced by his interest in '40's and '50's aircraft and cars, and wanting to make a movie serial like Buck Rogers (or something like that). He once said something along the lines that people have to figure out what something is within half a second of appearing on screen. If they can't, then the design is rejected. The question is - do the designs in 7 & 8 hold up to that logic? (personally I wouldn't have known that those new "bomber" spacecraft were bombers if I hadn't read about it somewhere). Sadly, me thinks that Disney is playing things too safe (with designs, storylines...).

http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/Stats/Statistics/personal/ZentradiEquipment.php Completed what few bits I could find on the Zentrādi Space Suits. Only Macross Perfect Memory and the This Is Animation books had anything substantial about them). The TiA book is a bit more interesting, because it appears to be directly from Miyatake-san, from notes he wrote on the lineart itself. (As near as I can tell, 3-7 means 3rd sheet, 7th image, or something along those lines). Also completed the Macross Chronicle SDFM Zentrādi 06A: Kamujin Kuravushera sheet: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRcharacter/MCRcharacter.php#SDFM I was hoping for a bit more insight on the (armoured) Zentrādi Space Suits. But ah well... There's a few new insights into SDFM, but alas, nothing statistically relevant.

Please post Bugs and Forum Feedback here

Myself, too. There was also a "Next Step: Optional Profile Information" pop-up at the top, that wouldn't resolve (perpetually at "Your profile is 0% complete"). Only clicking the 'dismiss' option has made it go away. The themes (or at least the one labelled "default") also appear to have been changed. -
New Macross TV Series in 20xx (sometime this decade)
sketchley replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
The simplest explanation (and one Kawamori-san himself used in explaining the setting of Frontier), is that "it is the Age of Discovery, with e-mail". So, just extrapolate the economic situation on Earth during that era to a pan-galactic scale, and you kind of get a sense of the economic system. Another thing to keep in mind is the sheer scale of the distances involved. If memory serves, it's been officially said that the Macross Frontier fleet took 20 years to get to where it is at the start of the series. The most direct route back to Earth takes 10 years. * Of course, the introduction of the Super Fold Booster technology has "reduced travel times to a 10th". But that's still an incredibly long travel time. -
Terminator 2 in theatres again 25Aug17

Intriguing idea. It rings true, as James Cameron hasn't directed a movie in... what is it now, a decade? Perhaps its a little bit of proof of concept, and a lot of getting back into the swing of directing movies?- 15 replies

DYRL: UN 04A: VT-1 Ostrich & VE-1 Elint Seeker: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL Alas, I had a very strong feeling of déjà vu while translating this one. A lot of the "detailed" information appears to have been used in the VFMF: VF-1 Valkyrie Space Wings book (which I've already translated an age ago). Nevertheless, I guess it's good to have that information coming from an 'official' publication. Though, I was surprised at the scope (or scale) of the VE-1's capabilities. I didn't expect its radar to be implied as being that capable! On a personal note - I think I'm going to take a step back from focusing on the Macross Chronicle DYRL mechanic articles (and I'm so close to finishing my goal of translating all of them! ). My focus de jour is on the Zentrādi hand-held weapons. Alas, Macross Chronicle seems to have neglected them... >.<;;; It's still a work in progress, but this should give an idea: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/Stats/Statistics/personal/ZentradiEquipment.php#AssaultRifle On a related note - Macross Chronicle has explicitly stated that the "Laser Machine Pistol" (that many RPGers have used as a Zentrādi handgun) is actually a dedicated and exclusive gun for the Nūjaderu-Gā! On the other hand, the 'Light Armour' (scroll up on the linky) has what looks like a handgun strapped to the soldier's right hip. Heh... even the 'Heavy Armour' name, etc., is wrong. One of the This Is Animation books refers to it as "Armoured Space Suit"...

New Macross TV Series in 20xx (sometime this decade)
sketchley replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
Erm... not quite. In short - you're not putting yourself in their shoes. PM Abe is being forced to increase the SDF (that's Self Defence Force, not the ship ), but he hasn't effectively conveyed to the public why. He's also trying to change article 9 in the process (the anti-war article in the constitution), which is provoking the most outrage. It's an incredibly complex issue to convey. Not the least of it is due to the (in my opinion) poor level of education on the recent past. So, a lot of people who haven't lived through those events, don't know (and, many don't care) about the geopolitics. So, Hayate's role in the series, though in-line with some of the people protesting the Abe government's 'militaristic' actions, also serves as the mouthpiece of the show's creators to the audience (like the pro-nature stance of some of the protagonists in Macross Zero). (To be perfectly honest - this is an issue that truly cannot be summarized in a few lines of text. I doubt I've done it justice.) -
MOSPEADA Inbit Revival Part II: Gosu?
sketchley replied to captain america's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yesterday, I pulled my copy of "Mospeada Complete Artworks" out, and while casually looking over the cover, it dawned on me that the battle armour under the transformed ride armour is itself a power suit. It only shows up on the cover piece (what was recently made into a 3D version and revealed at Wonderfest (?) a few weeks back), but... it would explain why Stig is able to make that superhuman jump (in addition to explaining why they're able to walk around wearing the Ride Armour without their legs buckling under the weight! ) [yeah, I know it's not official. But one can say that the cover is a modernized retcon to explain away those anime-leaps in the series] If you're curious, I'm referring to the 'exposed' chest abdomen area on the cover (exposed in the sense that it's not covered by the Ride Armour). -
Well, for starters, one must take into consideration who the micro missiles are intended to be fired at. The VF-0/Sv-51: each other (+ conventional human fighters) & Zentradi VF-1~: Zentradi VF-11~: Zentradi and other VFs (mainly other VFs). They appear to be designed for short range, swarm attacks. The explosive power of one missile is probably likely to disable, or seriously damage an equivalent VF from the same era. One other factor to keep in mind is technological advancements. So, the micro missiles a VF-1 used in 2009~ has significantly less performance (explosive and range) than the ones used by the VF-1X++ in 2059 - despite the two looking the same!

Not going to the site, but the short form of the answer is: Big West did. They went to trial (in Japan), and they lost the rights to the footage (not the designs) to Tatsunoko - who sold them to that real estate company. There are, of course, longer and more detailed answers to that already on the boards. I encourage you to look them up.

New Macross TV Series in 20xx (sometime this decade)
sketchley replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
It's 11.7 ly (that's for any vehicle, not just the AVF). Here's what I've gleaned over the years on Fold Navigation: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/Stats/Locations/FoldNavigation.php The most important would be the travel times (conventional Fold Drive rate based on the time it took the AVF to Fold from Eden to Earth*). I think it will answer your question on how far it is, in both the literal (distance) and figurative (travel time) senses. Note: the VF-24 would be using the equivalent of a Super Fold Booster. Some more info on Eden (green is the official setting): http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/Stats/Locations/Eden.php * the number may be an average of the two travel times given for the transit (memory is not serving me at the moment T.T). -
DYRL: UN 07A: SDF-1 Macross Ship-borne Craft: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL Surprisingly, this sheet has a lot of insight on the RC-4E. The stuff on the Large Crane Truck is also noteworthy - at the very least because it highlights how much thought and effort the creative staff put into their designs for the movie. While translating it, I kept mentally comparing it to the flatbed truck that appears in Frontier - and how much that is just a truck. Whereas this one is so much more, and also fits logically within the setting! They truly don't make this kind of stuff like they used to... T.T;;;

A comparatively light page: DYRL: UN 06A: Destroids: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL There's nothing truly groundbreaking when it comes to stats, but I do like how they continually reference the MBR-04-Mk I progenitor of (some of) the Destroids. Nevertheless, the stuff on the Monster was eyebrow raising. I wonder if the SDFM TV series sheet has more hard details and suggestions on how the Monster was perceived in-universe.
