He's kind of got a good point there: the Lux shampoo brand is written as ラックス: http://www.lux.co.jp/ (don't ask me why the vowels are being changed like that...) It raises the interesting possibility that it is a reference to the SF TV series "Lexx"*! * But before we go too far into exploring that possibility, the Japanese name for the series appears to be 機甲戦虫紀レックス: http://tsutaya.tsite.jp/item/movie/PTA00007YRZ9 I love how they give it the prefix "Armour Battle Insect Era"!!! LOL

Thanks! I'm glad that someone else found it interesting. As always, I wish I had the time (and energy) to finish off the rest of the article (the section on CG in MF) Maybe in another 10 years!

Great Mechanics.DX 6: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/OTgreatMechanics/OTgreatmechanics.php#GMDX A great tour de force article—with sections on the CG in MF (mostly untranslated), the VF-25 & 27, Destroids, Battle Pods, and an interview with Kazutaka Miyatake! There are many highlights (my favourite would have to be the opinion of the Zentrādi foot soldiers who have to ride the Rigādo), however the interview with Miyatake-san is the most insightful. In short, I've long been puzzled why Kawamori-san went to great efforts to include the dancing Valkyries at the beginning of Macross Delta (and emphasized their inclusion in a later Great Mechanics interview). Miyatake-san's answers in the interview indicate that the motivation behind that has been around since the beginning of Macross—an in the process, indirectly addressing questions like 'why are the Zentrādi only ever portrayed in antagonistic roles?' If you like mecha, this is highly recommended—both for the in-universe content, as well as the creative side of it.

Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII
sketchley replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
... well, it's a wee bit more complicated then that, but I do agree about it looking like a pregnant whale (even those renders don't hide the fact that it's not a sleek looking fighter). I'm not sure the specifics, but I'm pretty sure that the X-35's "Mission X" clinched the deal (in short, a sortie outside of the test regime that had the test craft do a STOVL takeoff, and transition to supersonic flight). The "Boring" test craft couldn't do that - it had to swap out a bunch of equipment to do either action. -

Seeing the preview, I got a very strong Vancouver vibe. (Casually) checking the filming locations and... it is indeed filmed there. ... I have a bad feeling about this one. That other, really stinky, movie with Predators was also filmed there. You know, the unwatchable "AVP2". Don't get me wrong - Vancouver is an AWESOME place to film (E.g.: X-Files). But when it comes to Predators, it has a poor track record. (And lets not get into the whole thing in the first two movies about Predators only appearing when it is exceedingly hot, and the forests around Vancouver (that they filmed in) are a temperate rainforest... )

Great Mechanics.DX 4: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/OTgreatMechanics/OTgreatmechanics.php#GMDX Finally got around to encoding the revised and mucho extended translation of that article (long story short, motivation petered out... as it stands, the later half is still unpolished.) What's new: the articles before the VF stats (the 3 pillars of Macross, Macross F Keywords, VF-25 text, Successive Generations Of Macross Productions, and the genealogy of VFs - now in picture form!) Edit: the Great Mechanics table of contents has also been enhanced: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/OTgreatMechanics/OTgreatmechanics.php I've added the Macross content (or lack thereof) in Great Mechanics #6, and #9, as well as Great Mechanics G #2017 Winter and #2018 Spring. It's not much, but it should be a useful guide for fellow fans looking for Macross mecha related content.

Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!
sketchley replied to Valkyrie Driver's topic in Movies and TV Series
Excellent points! That particular scene caused a lot of confusion regarding internal weapon bays. Which was made worse when the official materials stated that the VF-25 doesn't have any (never mind the Valkyrie trend of internal weapon bays up until that point). Your explanation is the best I've come across to explain that sequence (it's fundamentally an animation error. Albeit one unexpectedly caused by a CG modelling error). -

Note that Feios is just one possible transliteration. Pheyos Valkyrie is another (more?) common way to refer to that VF.

Argh! I thought I got all of them... Apparently "Apple Incident" is on their forbidden list. So, anything with "Sharon Apple Incident" in it results in a broken link. And we all know how important the Sharon Apple Incident is to Macross!

Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!
sketchley replied to Valkyrie Driver's topic in Movies and TV Series
I always had the impression that it was named after a bird. In this case, Oryol is an alternate spelling to Orel, which translates into "Eagle" from Russian. -
Right. Gotcha. Thanks! As nice as those books are in technical detail, we must always keep in mind that they are glorified fanfiction (unofficial for those that don't like that description).

I think it's a little bit of both. We've seen them used to overwhelm targets, as well as to herd them toward an optimal firing solution (or distract the target long enough...). Though, this does raise the question of why don't we see more intermediate or long range missiles? Yes, combat is highly stylized in Macross, but is passive and active stealthiness the Macross equivalent to Gundam's radar inhibiting Minovsky Particle?

The 'arms race' analogy is a bit weak (TBO, it feels like your adding stuff* that wasn't in the original Japanese text), but is acceptable. However, where did the explanation for how Active Stealth works appear? *It's not explicitly stated that radar systems have improved, but that they've moved on to different detection means (and those have improved). E.g.: Fold Wave or thermal detection systems.

Macross Δ (Delta) Mecha/Technology Thread - READ 1st POST
sketchley replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
It's about the same as real world pilots. The difference starts at about the AVF fighters with the introduction of G-reducing technologies: seats with anti-G technology, ISC, etc.. For more info: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/Stats/Statistics/Flightsuits/Flightsuits.php (note: when it says something like 15 G, it actually means the anti-G technology is absorbing anything above the human limit of approx. 9 G. -
I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just pointing out the logic behind the creation of the design, not how logical the design is. Those bombers are, for me, the stupidest thing in that movie. But, it still gives that movie a pass in my book, because they don't have the physics breaking things like they had in SW7 (maybe that should be the physics breaking stuff is far smaller, and less obvious in SW8 ).

Thanks! OK... I translated that (Great Mechanics.DX #9) a while ago, but I don't remember it ever talking about there being an "arms race". (Just checked too, and there's nothing about radar technology improving. It's more like active stealth itself improved from being merely anti fighter aircraft radar (1st gen). to anti all sizes of radar (3rd generation) with a high degree of perfection (presumably the 2nd generation is the same as the 3rd, but has a flawed or significantly lower perfection level).

Before Macross Zero was released, the VF-1 was never described as having stealth technology. However, Macross Zero attributed a (how shall I put it?) less advanced form of active stealth into the first generation Valkyries. Thus, the VF-1 was "retconned"* with active stealth. * I don't like this term, as with all things Macross, unless something is specifically stated, it is a possibility. Perhaps "it was clarified" would be better? See the following link (green text) for specific details of the pre-AVF version of Active Stealth: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/Stats/Statistics/Avionics/Countermeasures.php#activestealth

It doesn't help that Kawamori-san himself has said something along the lines of: if I tell the story as a TV series, it looks like this, if I tell it as a movie, it looks like that. All of them are dramatizations of *real* historical events. The implication being that the reality is something different from what we've been told. Compare it to the "Saving Private Ryan" movie and the real D-Day invasion. The condensed form of the movie is what "DYRL" essentially is. (By extension, the TV series is also a condensed form...)

Those bombers were designed around one thing - the sequence where she drops the switch and falls to go get it. Makes one wonder why they couldn't have just made the fuselage bigger, and incorporated the bomb bay inside the fuselage? Before I go any further nitpicking, it's as good a time as any to remind myself: the battle scenes in SW are based around WWII stuff (footage, tactics, etc.).

Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!
sketchley replied to Valkyrie Driver's topic in Movies and TV Series
The other thing with words borrowed into Japanese, is to keep in mind the error that they were borrowed in (thus added to the dictionary, and the spelling 'set in stone'). In brief (take it with a grain of salt): After WWII: words mainly from English After Meiji restoration: words mainly from German From around the Azuchi-momoyama (warring states) era: words mainly from Dutch. Intertwined through that, you have specific words borrowed from a variety of languages. For example: English mainly borrows from Germanic or Romance languages, but the word "taboo" comes from the Polynesian languages (specifically Tongan and Fijian).
