And the other part of Burita's Ship: DYRL: Zentradi 03B: Noputi Baganisu 5631: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL I found this one more interesting then the other 'recent' ones I tackled. I don't want to go so far as to say that it has a bunch of new facts, but it does highlight a bunch of details that I (and I hope others) haven't noticed. Personally, I don't like the revisions they made to the Zentradi in DYRL, but this page ends up highlighting the thought and creativity that went into those revisions.

Science and Technology MEGA THREAD
sketchley replied to Max Jenius's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Erm... those writers on Anime News Network have to get out more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballute . The ballute concept has apparently been around since 1958. However, the idea of using it for aerobraking appeared in the 1984 movie "2010". It's highly likely that the producers of 1985's Zeta Gundam got the idea for it from that movie (though Nasa did use it on the Gemini space capsule, so "2010" itself isn't exactly the progenitor of the idea per se - maybe just the idea of putting it in front of the thing being slowed instead of behind...). -

Finishing off one that I almost finished... and then life interrupted. DYRL: Zentradi 03A: Noputi Baganisu 5631: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL For a page that I was expecting to be light on details, this one introduced a few things that I hadn't noticed until tackling the translation. Hopefully it'll have the same effect on my readers.

If I'm not mistaken, those rankings are based on the opinions of the people who bothered to fill-out and mail-in the questionnaire that comes with the magazine. So, what you're seeing is the opinion of the few Newtype readers who mailed in a questionnaire...

No. Don't have that one. When the VFMF series first started, I was curious about it. But now that the VFMF series has successfully taken off, I lost interest. I can't commit to any big jobs right now, but it won't hurt to take a look and see what we have to work with. My hotmail address should be fine (find-able at the top of any of the previous links of mine in this topic).

Thank you! Thankfulness for the effort is gratifying. No, I never picked up the Macross the Ride (MtR) novels... I'm still meaning to finish off the MtR articles that appeared in Dengeki Hobby Magazine at some point... Frankly, there's too much Macross in print!

Alien: Covenant (formerly known as Prometheus 2)
sketchley replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
BBC news had an interesting review. I only skimmed the callouts (trying to avoid spoilers, you know), but they summed the movie up as an interesting Blade Runner episode (!) in a middling Aliens movie. Take what you want from that...- 352 replies

AMM0112SQ. Apparently they're an upgrade to the AMM-102. Pg 091 has a bit more on them, with a clearer image (not quite square, but I like the thrust vectoring paddles on the nozzle).

Good question. I don't have the answer, but Google brings up some pages with additional info (in Japanese): http://www.ms-plus.com/75492 and a bigger pict of the cover: http://samada08.blog10.fc2.com/blog-entry-2346.html It appears that it's planning to be released on May 12.

Meltrandi 02A Miria Ship: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL I found this one... a bit more of a chore to do than the other (recent) ones. Perhaps it's the recounting of the obvious or the lack of new detail...? At least it reinforces one thing: those big Macross ship guns are literally the entire front third of the ships they are built into!

I've translated it as: Autre Mauer Mauer is a legitimate non-Japanese surname (the only one I could find in the kana used for that character's name!), and Autre being a French term for 'another' or 'different'. Which turns the name into a kind of a pun (I'm fairly confident that was the original intent, as it happens occasionally with Macross character names.) http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRglossary/Glossary06a.php#reverse That said, Autol is an interesting alternative - changes the pun into a Spannish place name, mind you.

Alien: Covenant (formerly known as Prometheus 2)
sketchley replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I enjoyed it. Probably because it's really about something... well, how can I say this without spoilers? Consider the origins of the title Prometheus, for starters. Anyhow, it's best to approach this film with an open mind. It's designed as an open-ended film. So, don't go in expecting a bunch of answers. However, there are answers in the form of hints and clues. Anyhow, you should see it for two reasons: 1) it is beautifully shot. 2) it's a Ridley Scott film. Never mind the story or characters, nobody does world-building and atmosphere (or should I say atmospheres? ) like he does.- 352 replies

My 2 cents are that military innovation generally occurs when there is a clear, ongoing threat. In the real world, the 2 World Wars and the Cold War saw great advances, as well as a multitude of new equipment. "Stagnation" only really occurred after the conclusion of them. The same can hold true for the SW universe: as long as the conflict between the Rebels and the Empire existed, there would be great advances. When that conflict ended, stagnation occurs. So... I agree that Disney should be investing in more new designs to appear alongside the old ones (ones that should rightly be tinkered with and 'upgraded' somehow), but I disagree that it should all be entirely new.

You're always welcome to make an attempt at it yourself. More rolling along... Macross Chronicle DYRL Meltrandi 03A: Meltrandi Warships: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL This one is a bit more informative than the other Zentradi ship related ones - simply because the Meltrandi are depicted so differently in DYRL! Alas, it's still not very much at all...

Not that I know of. Renato was the only other MW member I was aware of that was occasionally translating interviews, and I don't believe that he ever did it (if memory serves, his focus was more on the production staff behind SDFM, not the mechanical designs (me) or characters (Gubaba)).

I seem to be on a roll (LOL) Macross Chronicle DYRL Meltrandi 03B: Meltrandi Warships: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL As usual, not much in the way of hard and fast details. But there are some nuggets and hints here and there.

Agreed. When it came to new, interesting designs, Rogue One has it in spades. Didn't JJ purchase all the paintball guns in the UK in preparation for filming Eps.7? (I remember reading that somewhere...) So, technically, they're not Nerf guns, but paintball guns! Also, weren't the trooper guns on the OT based off of real guns? (again, I think I remember reading that somewhere... in MW?) If so, it would explain why the former look lethal, and the latter look like toys!

Did this one to complete the pair, and 'cuz it looked easy (LOL... are they ever 'easy'?). Macross Chronicle - DYRL Zentradi 02A: Zentradi Military Vessels: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL Surprisingly... something interesting did pop up: Gorugu Gantsu (or Golg Gantz) is the name of the Mobile Fortress's big gun! Looks like the RPGers and other stats resources will have to amend their write-ups for the wrongly named "Golg Gants Charts" Heavy Attacker! LOL

Long time, no update, eh? Well, I dusted off the translation tools for another stab at Macross Chronicle - DYRL Zentradi 02B: Zentradi Military Vessels: http://monkeybacon.mywebcommunity.org/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php As usual, it's light on specifics. But on the other hand, I'm happy for the few specifics that it does give! LOL

Ghost in the Shell Live Action - March 31, 2017
sketchley replied to Mechinyun's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Sarcasm doesn't really work on message boards, does it. LOL Agreed. It's almost as if they are from two different movie universes. That said... the 3rd movie ruined the alternate-universe sequel series. The end of the 2nd one had so many possibilities (E.g.: Neo waking up out of a constructed reality - the so-called Matrix actually being a constructed reality inside of that constructed reality!). But alas, they opted to go down the standard Hollywood action route... T.T; Nevertheless, it's interesting that Matrix (the first film) pops up in discussing this movie. The Matrix itself lifted many shots (and in some cases, scenes!) from the first animated GiTS movie. The two most obvious ones are the timing of the collapsing marble panel at the end of the lobby shootout sequence, and the exploding watermelons in the market chase! So, that begs the question: did either of those two scenes (shall we call them Easter eggs?) make it into this live action remake?- 751 replies

I love that gun strap! Very well done Lego VF-1.
-
Well, I'm curious about what it has to say about the variants (above all else, they are the better part of the series. At the very least, they stimulate the imagination with thoughts of what could've been - for better or for worse. LOL).
-
I don't fret about them too much - if they're not in a place that they shouldn't logically be in! LOL For example, a vertical line on a VF nose cone is out of place, but a horizontal one is plausible. Nevertheless, one trick I picked up from Japanese hobby magazines, is to put glue on both sides of a seam, and press the parts firmly together, so that some of the melted plastic starts to come out from the seam line. It's a poor man's filler, but in 9 out of 10 cases, it fills up the seams adequately, with the minimum of sanding afterwords (it helps, especially with the snap together kits, to cut off any inside (or hidden) knobs, etc., that prevent you from applying the maximum force on the seam. Note: not your maximum force. What the part can handle. LOL).
