The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
tekering replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I agree, the upcoming "Virtus" looks like a viable alternative to "Saltus," but "Big Spring" is clearly inferior... although certainly better than "Allen" or "Apache." [ . . . ] This is getting ridiculous. I still can't believe the third-party market can survive this level of competition.- 9344 replies

Well, this is interesting: A Macross Plus 1:72 VF-11 Super Thunderbolt by Hasegawa, and a Macross Plus 1:72 VF-11 Super Thunderbolt by Hobby Base RETPPU. I would expect some parts to exhibit minor scale discrepancies -- wings and feet, especially -- since the kits represent different modes... ...but this is unbelievable! These kits are clearly NOT to scale.

I suppose this means the VF-1 fighter kit pre-orders have been selling well... ...and we'll probably be seeing more "Minimum Factory" pilot figures from Frontier and Delta (and fewer DYRL characters as a result).

So, you're asking for pictures from the booth where pictures were not allowed?

That's the exciting thing with the Gnerl -- beyond the iconic Zentradi symbol mid-fuselage, there's no established precedent to work from. Keep it clean and simple like the anime does, hyper-detail it like old Imai packaging artwork does, or anything in between. Of course, but I'll probably need decals for some of the smaller markings anyway (not to mention all the custom decals I'm using for the Thunderbolt), and it's a more efficient solution than a complicated masking job... Without knowing how long this is all gonna take, I can't afford to be wasting time!

Filament? I doubt they used a cheap FDM printer for these. It's more likely you're seeing the voxelization produced by a DLP process, which (despite being inferior to SLA printing) is considerably faster than the alternatives. They'd have to be running multiple printers simultaneously to mass-produce these as it is, and SLA techniques could've set the release back by months. Either way, I'm shocked and disappointed by the results.

Rough-sketching Zentradi markings on the fuselage, to determine the correct size to print the custom logo I made...

I had to see that for myself... and was surprised to discover that last issue had a Japanese scale chart hastily inserted into a panel...!

The issue is confused by casting an actress we're used to seeing with blonde hair, dying that hair red to establish a character with a consistent hair color over seven years of movies, and then suddenly portraying her as a blonde. Rationally, we can assume the character has decided to dye her hair blonde, but it's disconcerting... and subconsciously, we're thinking "Did someone forget to dye Scarlett Johansson's hair this time?" I think it was a terrible decision for Infinity War, and apparently it's still causing confusion in Endgame (which is already confusing enough at the story level).

I just can't wrap my head around this. Over forty 1:48 Valkyries displayed on a custom-made flight deck base in fighter mode... ...and only ONE of them with landing gear deployed?

So, you have three completely different 1:72 VF-4 Valkyrie fighter mode resin garage kits?

You can have my Figuarts Ronin, dude. I'll be content with just the Hawkeye. And Boba's still available on Amazon.co.jp.

"Destroyed?" Well, I suppose it gets destroyed eventually... It's just a matter of time, really. In other words, it's a "time thing."

Bolt’s Blt comp entry#1 Neo Grade VF1 Armored Valkyrie
tekering replied to Bolt's topic in The Workshop!
Awesome, Bolt. Looking forward to this one. So, like, is anybody building anything that isn't 1:72...? -
All of 'em, if we're lucky. Anything to help supply equal demand. The Max 1A pre-order madness was... madness.

In the hopes that the "Built It Competition" hosted by @Return To Kit Form exceeds 20 entries ('cause I'm dead-set on getting a 1:72 Norbert Gerard Power Armour kit!), I've decided to devote all my resources to the task... meaning I'm gonna spend the next six months building all three of my Macross resin kits. The third and final entry is the oldest kit, and will definitely prove the most challenging; it's also the only officially-licensed resin kit I own, produced by Hobby Base RETPPU. I bought it nearly 25 years ago, back when Macross Plus was the hottest property in the franchise. And wouldn't you know it, 25 years later, Macross Plus is STILL the hottest property in the franchise.
