It turns out there's a TIE variant in The Empire Strikes Back I never even knew existed: This barely-glimpsed TIE shuttle delivers Captain Needa to Vader's Super Star Destroyer. I've decided I can kitbash one using existing toys, just as ILM kitbashed their model from existing parts: I'll just have to scratchbuild some of the exterior detailing. I wish I could concentrate on more than one model at a time... Even planning an upcoming project interferes with progress on an existing one. The more online research I pursue, the more I ignore what's lying on my workbench! ๐

The 'Hey look at this really cool model build I saw' post

That VF1 may not have won the race, but it definitely won the modeling contest! ๐ -
Well, that basically defines all secondary canon, doesn't it? ๐ Official "mook" sources like the Macross Master Files are full of such extrapolation, even if it may occasionally contradict what was inconsistently depicted in the original animation (or vintage promotional art). This is a distinction best applied to terrestrial installations, rather than units assigned to operations in space (where the "aerial" classification is less significant). Thus, Destroids assigned to the SDF-1 may sport the traditional UN Spacy roundels, whereas those assigned to Earth bases would have the reverse-color roundels.

I wouldn't have minded, if they'd at least nailed the robot mode... but sheesh, what's with that face? I don't remember Powerglide looking like a psychotic murderbot. Yikes!- 18059 replies

STAR WARS Merchandise Episode - 2
tekering replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
As Hasbro Star Wars toys are no longer imported by Toy Sapiens, Amazon.co.jp is now the official Japanese retailer... although they seem a little confused by the product line: This image links to all the Black Series listings, but neither the vehicle nor the figure it comes with are part of the line. ๐ -

Oh no, that's a completely different market. Bandai routinely releases Robot Spirits and RG model kits concurrently (even though they're the same scale), 'cause some like to make models and some like to collect completed action figures. Furthermore, 1:20 Scopedog models are more than twice the size of the HMRs (even though they cost half as much). ๐

I seem to recall discussion a few years back about incorporating Discovery (and thus its spinoffs Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy) into the Kelvin timeline, both as a means of addressing inconsistencies in canon (Spock's adopted sister?), technological anachronisms (interactive hologrammatic communications, for example), and cosmetic differences (like the Klingon redesigns). At the very least, Eaglemoss ran with that when it came to classifying Discovery miniatures... However, given the continuity nods to Prodigy, the appearance of the Klingon character, and that Robert Picardo seems to be reprising his role from Voyager, I suppose Starfleet Academy is definitively part of the Prime timeline...? ๐คจ

The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread

Exactly my experience. Gravity holds it down, so it poses and displays fine, but it doesn't lock in place at all. Exactly my experience as well. I tried sandwiching a toothpick between the hand and the shield around the grip to provide leverage, but the tabs on the grip still wouldn't fit securely into the slots in the palms. These are among the best Transformers X-Transbots has released, but... they're still X-Transbots.- 9460 replies

Sweet lighting, @Mog! I was never content with my original shot, and I figured it was worth a retake: A higher angle allowed the figures to blend in better with their surroundings, and more adequate light provided brighter colors. ๐

Lemme take you back to 2021, a big year for the MCU. Remember Black Widow? Shang-Chi? Eternals? It was a bad year for Disney, but Sony did better with Venom 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home (especially considering we were in the midst of a global pandemic). It was back during those halcyon days that I pre-ordered "Maedas," X-Transbots' Masterpiece-style Camshaft. A specific release date was not announced, but I certainly didn't think I'd be waiting FIVE YEARS for it...! If you ask me, though , it was worth the wait. ๐ At long last, the Omnibots are together again! ๐- 9460 replies

I thought that robot mode was oddly-proportioned and ugly, but you managed to find a pose that makes him look cool nonetheless. Kudos, Mike!- 18059 replies

Guinan is El-Aurian, as was Dr. Soran... and there was a guy in an episode of DS9, as I recall. ๐ค I don't know what a "Lanthenite" is, as I haven't seen Strange New Worlds. ๐คจ

@MechTech, you've greatly elevated that ridiculous Shin Musha with a thematically-relevant display case. Remarkable! ๐ Nice save on the Bronco II, @Chas. is that mechanical arm a part of the kit? I'm happy with the color scheme I've settled on for the Bioroid worker, but I don't like the look of the lenses... I couldn't get a painted resin surface to look transparent, so I decided to try a more cel-shaded approach. Maybe I should use silver instead of white...? Oh no, it's merely a static toy, with an ugly stock paint job and infamously fragile landing gear. Mine had to be hung from the ceiling after repainting. It didn't even come with pilot figures, so I had to customize my own... Nonetheless, you won't find a loose one under $1000 USD... or $2000 in its original box!
-
Yeah, me too. If it's not at least a million dollars, I don't bid. ๐

Well, today was a productive day. ๐ Kitbashing random decals to enhance detail is my favorite part of this process, and the most creatively fulfilling. I look for shapes and colors that complement the topography of the model, and apply the waterslides wherever it seems appropriate. Sometimes I find decals that suit the model so well, you'd think they were designed for it! In this particular case, I'm trying to match the decals I used on the Biopsycher a couple years ago: However, trying to source more of the Bandai decal sheets I'd used in 2023 has suddenly become prohibitively expensive, as they now command at least TEN times what they'd cost only a couple years ago...! Frankly, I'd rather just make do with whatever I have left over from those days. The secondary market is nuts, man. ๐ ...or even a completed F-14, with little assembly required...? ๐ Who doesn't love the Tomcat? ๐

Five to ten years? More like five to ten months... ...and, if we include third-party seekers, a new mold gets rolled out every five to ten weeks. ๐- 18059 replies

Damn you, Mog! I never thought of the Legioss/Tread connection rod that way, but now the sexual innuendo is inescapable. ๐ณ

That's not Oshii's style; he's the filmmaker most likely to embrace the latest technological innovations. I'm sure he'd prefer it was live-action.
-
Definitely looking forward to that! It'll look a little brighter after a couple matte topcoats, but panel-lining and decals have to come first... It's mostly the mold release agent, which requires a little soap or alcohol to remove... but traditional resin kits (especially Moscato's) sometimes have very smooth surfaces, and a little light sanding makes a world of difference. Even so, paint tends to pool along the edges if too much is applied, so many thin layers is best.
