  1. The next update to my website includes a very good scan from a very good source book of the Destroid Tomahawk schematics. I'm away on holiday right now and thus don't have access to my Photoshop files, but I will be back very late tomorrow evening. If you haven't already obtained the schematics from another member here (or perhaps you just want another version for comparison), just let me know and I'll post the line art in this thread.
  2. As luck (misfortune?) would have it, I re-watched this film yesterday and found it a lot less enjoyable than my initial viewing in the theatre. This time around the pedestrian script and the simplistic characters bothered me a lot more and as a result I couldn't enjoy the stronger elements of the film. I feel there was far more wasted potential on screen than actual worthwhile content to be found upon repeat viewing. I feel disappointed by the movie, especially as a follow up to District 9. This did not deliver on the promise of the films premise nor Blomkamp's potential. Not something I'll ever watch again. I am sad I will say that at the very least, films like Elysium are good for starting a conversation about real world issues even if the film itself fails to tackle those issues in any new/significant way. Of course, any mature discussions having long since been banned at Macross World, this film being a discussion catalyst is functionally impotent on a board like this.
  3. Okay, that was rather funny. The final "song" at the end was comedy gold
  4. Not bad. I think the Variable Spartan is my favourite. There are some interesting flourishes to the classic designs.
  5. It would probably be treated like a "favorite" thread and discouraged and/or locked. Yay for MW!
  6. It will be very difficult to achieve the awe and immersion of the first film with a sequel, even if this sequel is a good movie in it's own right. The first "How to Train Your Dragon" film managed to outdo Avatar for immersion, with flying scenes so dynamic and exhilarating it was like watching Macross Plus for the first time again. I agree this trailer spoils ways too much, which means I may not see it after all. Shame because it may be good.
  7. This doesn't look half bad. They don't show much, so it's hard to say where they are going dramatically or if the series will contain the trademark humour of Patlabor. The Ingram looks amazing as a live action adaptation of Izubuchi's classic mechanical design. I'll have to keep this on my radar.
  8. I think I'd have to agree with you anime52k8. I do think difficulty is a carry over from the arcade days, but it's probably also influenced from Japanese video games as well, since so many seem to traffic in brutal difficulty even to this day.
  9. Not to worry about any artistic license, this is looking great so far. Btw, my offer still stands.
  10. TwoDucks Fair enough, but much like myk has touched upon, there's very little to get out of the list other than masterbation. The choices do nothing but reinforce the insular behaviour of the list makers and only server to understandably anger other anime fans. The context within they want to explore anime robots as a top 20 list has no sensical context beyond what SOME fans of anime were doing in the 1980s and 1990s, but there's nothing to learn here. Which is fine if that was the original intent they successfully implemented, but they will be justly criticized for doing so. However I will digress that in their defense this is not a video I would have even looked at were I not so bored during a dead day at work just prior to my holiday vacation. So I'm equally to blame TehPW You're welcome. It seemed the least I could do Vifam7 Perhaps. But also consider the flip side of such a list; which pretty much just reinforces the major touchstones and benchmarks of anime mecha from the past few decades that doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know. I mean does Evangelion, Gundam, Macross and Patlabor need anymore praise and mention than the vast resevoir of such they already have? Again, I'd go back to myks post and say an opportunity to perhaps say more about lesser known anime mecha was a good concept for a favorites list.
  11. I can only speak for myself, but I think I'm pretty much done with extreme difficulty video games. I know many video games today are far too easy but I just don't want to put myself through another Terror from the Deep, mostly because the "rewards" simply aren't worth it anymore (and honestly, never really were). No one cares if you're good at video games, outside of the competitive gaming circuits, and I'm no professional gamer. Games like X-COM Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within, Portal 1/2 and Battlefield 3/4 are the limit of how much challenge/frustration I want to endure from video games. And on the odd occasion I'm feeling particularly masochistic, there's always Super Meat Boy.
  12. Work is absolutely dead today and I'm bored out of my mind so I sat through this poorly rationalized, absurdly long video (40 minutes for a top 20 list? Retarded). Though he did use the SDF-1 Macross image from my website, so I guess I have to give him some credit for taste Here's Sage's List so no one else must suffer as I did: 20. Jehuty (Zone of Enders), 19. Omega Weapon (Final Fantasy V), 18. Raxephon (Raxephon), 17. Megatron (Transformers), 16. Mazinger Z (Mazinger Z), 15. Metal Gear Rex (Metal Gear Solid), 14. Gurren Lagann (Gurren Lagann), 13. Liger Zero (Zoids), 12. Zaku II (Mobile Suit Gundam), 11. The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant), 10. M.E.G.A.S. (MEGAS XLR), 9. BGY-11 (The Big Guy and Rusty), 8. Tetsujin-28 (Tetsujin-28), 7. Lion Voltron (Voltron), 6. SDF-1 Macross (Super Dimension Fortress Macross), 5. EVA Unit 01 (Neon Genesis Evangelion), 4. Big-O (The Big-O), 3. Optimus Prime (Transformers), 2. Giant Robo (Giant Robo), 1. RX-78-2 Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam). Patlabor got an honorable mention, clearly the fodder to cajole anime fans into providing his video views and to post angrily in the site comments I know my stomach will suffer for it, but I agree with Duke Togo that Gunbuster is a glaring omission. I'm no fan of super robots, but Gunbuster has to be acknowledged on any top list simply for it's moment in history and lineage to the biggest 1990's mecha show. Gunbuster was a super robot that attained popularity during the height of the real robot genre and was featured in one of the best-animated OVAs produced in the benchmark era of 1980's hand-drawn animation. When we talk animation achievement, productions like Macross: Do You Remember Love? Akira, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Aim for the Top! Gunbuster are the poster children for defining that era's best animation. Of course, there's also the fact that Gunbuster was Hideaki Anno's first director credit and was both a precursor to Neon Genesis Evangelion in terms of both storytelling and visual/mechanical design. If I were ever to include a super robot on my own fansite, it would only be Gunbuster. Don't know if I like enough unique anime robot shows to do a top 20 list of my, but any list of mine would likely include the Macross mecha on my site and the More Mecha section. VF-1J Valkyrie, YF-19/VF-19A Excalibur, YF-21/VF-22 Sturmvogel II (Macross) AV-98 Ingram, AV-XO Type X-O "Zero" (Mobile Police Patlabor) Junchoon, SR-4 ODK Last Junchoon, LED Mirage, Knight of Gold (Five Star Stories) RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex, MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai, MS-18E Kämpfer, MSN-04 Sazabi, MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis", RX-93 ν Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam) EVA Unit 01, EVA Unit 00, EVA Unit 02 (Neon Genesis Evangelion) Escaflowne, Scherazade (The Vision of Escaflowne) Gunbuster (Aim for the Top! Gunbuster)
  13. I purchased the DLC but haven't had much time to play it as yet. I know it's officially DLC, but labeling "Enemy Within" as DLC just seems like such a disservice IMO. The breadth of content is so great and the integration so seamless that it feels like a whole other game entirely. If only other game's DLC was this good.
  14. So sorry to hear we've lost one of our members. RIP.
  15. I think that what makes a good actor - and establishments like the Academy are often to blame for this - has been dominated by narrow thinking for so long many have lost the ability to critically appreciate the non-traditional aspects of acting. Tom Cruise is a case in point. He's okay at emoting and his diction isn't all that great, but his physical commitment to acting is superb. When Cruise falls as a stunt, you believe it. When he fights or runs in a scene, it feels kinetic and real. When he flips out in the middle of a sports agency office, it's physical entertainment personified. These may be small moments easy to forget or overlook, but they absolutely evoke immersion and appreciation in performance. Speaking of which, I think "performance" is something that gets overlooked terribly when judging actors. Granted, performance is NOT acting, but it can be artistically fulfilling and highly entertaining. Arnold Schwarzenegger has never been a good actor and his range is terrible, but as a performer the man is almost endlessly watchable. Arnold is simply an interesting human being, with a great physical presence and an almost infectious enthusiasm for life and performing. He's so watchable on screen because that charisma and spark comes through so well on film. Sometimes I just don't give a crap about real in a movie; Arnold makes things INTERESTING. As the great Stanley Kubrick once said about acting; "Real is good; interesting is better". To veer back on topic, "Edge of Tomorrow" doesn't look all that interesting
  16. Size Comparison Chart FTW! Well, I guess this chart now officially confirms the Quel-Quallie Theatre Scout Pod is 126.7 meters long excluding the landing struts. It's about twice the size I had originally thought according to this size diagram. I'm also proud that I appear to have accurately guessed the height of the VB-6 Konig Monster in Destroid mode in my own size chart years ago. Go M3!
  17. Although the main question has already been answered, I just want to chime in with some reassurance. The number of these large cannon turrets do accurately correspond to the official written trivia. Count each one of these turrets on the line art and they add up to the official number of guns. Also, I believe the Macross Chronicle does identify these as cannons. I think some of my old art books (This Is Animation Series #11: Macross Do You Remember Love? and Do You Remember Love? Special Preview) that also correctly identify the guns. So worry not!
  18. It looks okay, but it's not inspiring me. IMO, this is not an in-theatre kind of movie, but might be worth checking out on-demand or on Netflix IF word-of-mouth and the podcast reviews say anything good. On the Tom Cruise topic, I think that like most of the Hollywood old guard Tom's best work is behind him. Any memorable pop culture with Cruise pretty much ended after Magnolia and Minority Report. Having said that I agree that every once in a while he'll be part of something that I enjoy for what it is (Collateral, MI: Ghost Protocol, Tropic Thunder). I will say this of Tom Cruise; he's never been a great actor but as a good actor he's had a better, more interesting and longer run in prime form than almost any other living actor. Unlike many of his contemporaries like Bruce Willis or Brad Pitt, I have never been able to accuse Cruise of phoning-in a role that I have ever seen. Say what you will of the man (and there's lots to say), he's always hard working and committed to the role. It's probably why he's so prolific and why so many seem willing to work with him. I have to respect his craft as the actor, even though I don't respect his politics as a person.
  19. Is that what that was? Didn't know it was a gargoyle, but it looked cool
  20. Off to a great start. I have a bunch of line art for the Monster if you want it for reference. Just let me know.
  21. Tochiro Hahaha, no worries. Wow, you're busy fella. Hats off to you! It's funny that you should lament Gen-Y attitudes. I kinda get off being in a perpetual state of pop-culture rediscovery, especially for film, music and literature. So I tend to get along well with younger people as much as those my own age. But I acknowledge the rarity of my personality type Your's is the only Macross podcast I've listened to. I wasn't even aware of any others. I imagine that's a good thing, hahaha. I think content-wise your podcast is great and covers plenty about Macross and anime. Although there's not enough mention on the podcast of that one Macross fansite. Can't remember the name. Some guy that colors the Macross drawings. Phenomenal website. Worth more praise, more worship, donations, Nobel prizes, free shawarma delivery, etc Renato Have no worries about asking, so long as I'm not bothering you guys. I just don't want to be a pest, at least no more than usual So podcasts and habits. Regarding podcasts, I listen to many podcasts and I'm also an avid viewer of YouTube commentators. By no means an exhaustive list but I listen/listened to Slashfilm Podcast, IFC Podcast, How Did This Get Made?, Totally Rad Show, Venture Beat, Filmspotting, SpeakpodCast, CollectionDX, GiantBombcast, ANNCast, Calgary Flames Podcast (no wise cracks about this), series-specific podcasts (A Cast of Kings, A Cast of Ice and Fire, The Ones Who Knock, etc), AV Club, NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour, Savage Lovecast, and A Life Well Wasted. I also try to sample some of the "best of" lists at the end of the each year, surfing the Podcast Awards for content to try. Lastly - and I'm not proud of some of these - I explore podcasts which I don't necessarily enjoy but try once to expose myself to the "funny little worlds of other people". Catholic Insider, Bend Over And Take It!, Ardent Atheist, Al Jazeera, etc. Regarding habits, I don't have a commute (yes, I know that's strange to hear from a citizen of one of the worst traffic cities on the continent). I listen to podcasts during work, while cooking and especially while coloring content for the M3. There are times when podcasts are so interesting/intense that I must direct all my attention on doing just that, but to be honest, most podcasts are not good enough for that, LOL. I try to listen to a podcast all in one sitting, but it's not always possible, especially with long form (which might be why I shy away). I don't think I've ever finished a GiantBombcast in one go Not sure if YouTube is relevant but since you mentioned it I listen to a lot of short form (~10 mins) commentators speaking about video games. LevelCapGaming, TheRussianBadger, and others are my regulars for Battlefield commentary, tips, guides and strategies. CGP Grey is always informative and a bunch of others Hope that all helps.
  22. Dear gawd. As if the ship didn't already look like a turd, now they do the unthinkable and post a picture of it vertically. My vote for worst cover idea for a Macross publication evar!
  23. Clown-colored mecha FTW!
  24. Now THIS is a monster movie done right! I've seen Gareth Edward's Monsters and this Godzilla trailer confirms that all his promise from that indie film has been realized in a smooth transition to big budget. I hope this film is good because this trailer did everything right, down to the music from a Kubrick movie! Film lives!
