I was going to say it might have just been that someone dropped the negative and put it back wrong, but that would just prove I'm old...

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Dynaman replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'm on the second disk of "Speed Grapher", from the name I was not expecting much but the show is pretty decent. I'm hoping it does not lose focus or have a stupid ending, but good so far. (not anime, but TCM had a Akira Kurisawa film festival I taped a while back, they were all great - currently finishing up Seven Samurai, the movie just keeps getting better every time I see it) -
Oh heck, up till now I was looking forward to a Blake's 7 reboot, now it is going to either be great and cancelled, or really really suck and never end... http://blastr.com/2012/08/that-blakes-7-reboot-has.php

> A bunch of people sitting around commenting on what they like best is not my idea of entertainment. (Unless it is Joel/Mike and the Bots of course) Now that IS a good idea, time to call up Steven Moffat and pass along the idea...

The wife and I saw it last weekend, enjoyable popcorn flick. Well enough made, not too many duh! moments (building the "Fall" in the first place counts though, as Roger Ebert said - there has to be a cheaper way to get cheap labor to the UK...)

That happened in the Japanese Army (and a LOT), not in the navy. At least not on a capital ship. Beating up inferiors, don't know if that was as commonplace in the WWII Japanese navy as in the army - but in the army it was practically required.

Times have changed, the blatant disregard for chain of command is missing from the new show as well (at least so far), all the changes for the better IMHO. I don't miss Kodai's hot-head ways either, looking at the old show now those moments are actually cringe worthy at best.

Red Dawn Remake---Is nothing sacred???
Dynaman replied to derex3592's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
My point is not even about the invasion of the US itself (in the original). It was that a bunch of kids could take on Russian Spetznaz (at one point) is laughable at best, jingoistic nonsense at worst. The original did have one thing going for it, the Hinds they mocked up looked great, and the RPGs actually had a missile trail (OK, two things) -
Kodai (Wildstar) did storm into Avatar's (Okita's) hospital room, but Okita deflects his anger by saying that he had led men into death and was sorry for it but it was necessary, or something to that effect. It is very nice that Yuki's role has been split into multiple characters (the other women on board), if only for allowing more romantic relationships on the show... The nurse is a good example, shown as a bit of a bimbo, till she needs to do triage and then she takes charge. Next episode is the farewell episode, be interesting to see if Yuki calls anyone. Yamamoto, Yuki thinks that Kodai is interested in her, which is making for an interesting twist.

Red Dawn Remake---Is nothing sacred???

That is being unfair, the original was also a steaming pile of garbage that made no sense. -
At least they are not tying the results of a multiplayer videogame into the plot (or is that this show too?). THAT is a dumb idea.

I generally hate reboots, but Robocop I'll make an exception for - the sequals hosed it up so completely that a reboot is the only way to go. As for TR, the original was one of the great Arnold movies, but an Arnold movie it was - with everything that implies (great cinema NOT being one of them). I'd happily watch it again and again. This new one, I'll wait for the DVD and rent it most likely.

No idea, it is beyond the price I would normally pay but it is Yamato... Just watched the second disc, just plain excellent. All the changes are for the better (Jupiter doesn't just take them by surprise as they fly by, no snow on Mars, Relfex gun has a reason for being there, the Gamilas troops on Mars are actually fleshed out a bit - at least the commander - and are more then just martinets now, the Yuki/Kodai relationship is a bit different). The redone design of the cosmo tigers is great too, the originals were pretty bland but these new ones have excellent detail.

You may have been joking but I'm not, the movies where much more entertaining then the books. I stopped reading LOTR when I found myself reading an entire paragraph about a knot on a tree, for the third time (you know - you read something so boring you lose track and have to start over). I've never skipped pages like I have with LOTR either, all of the poems were real snoozers. The Hobbit on the other hand, read it from cover to cover and it flowed very well, sure it was a children's book, but it was a very well done one.

> And i based the statement according to Amazon, they have the vol 1 blu ray for $106. But it's stated it only has the first 2 eps. Later disks have 4 episodes rather then 2, so $25 an ep rather then 50. Still a bit steep but not totally out of the park...

Most US Star Blazers fans I've talked with don't really give a rip what it is called, the changes made to the show to create Star Blazers were so minor it did not impact on the story or characters. The biggest problem is getting SB fans to know that 2199 is available in the states - most of them appear to not be anime fans in general.

It's a bomb all right... If that is the star of the movie then I agree, but oh what a wretched film to star in. (I'd say I could watch her in anything but that would not quite be true)- 854 replies

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time II: The Quickening
Dynaman replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'll have to revive this thread, tried to watch "Tokyo Gore Police" last night and I ended up shutting it off after 30 minutes or so - the noise was distracting me from the book I was reading. I knew it would be bad, but I had no idea just how bad it could be. The title of one of the extras leads me to believe this is a somewhat popular genre(*) in Japan, is that true? (*) - By genre I mean movies with lots of cheesy mutilation scenes and no plot.- 854 replies

It is a fact, but since the movie is not very far along in production that doesn't make it much more then rumor... http://www.nme.com/filmandtv/news/new-starship-troopers-movie-to-be-less-violent/272555
