If I were into the multiplayer games that seem oh so popular with the youth these days I'd probably care...

...oh snap.  They're going to require PSN accounts for Ghost of Tsushima on Steam, too.😒

Homer Loudest GIF - Homer Loudest Profanity GIFsYARN | Dear Lord. That's the loudest profanity I've ever ...

Also, found this which may clarify some things:

Quote
  • Sony games on PC only require a PlayStation Network account. Don't confuse this with a paid PlayStation Plus subscription. PlayStation Network accounts are completely free.

  • If PlayStation Network is not available in your country, you can create one in another country. No need for a VPN or anything like that. You just need an address from another country, which can be easily found on Google. NOTE: if you do this or PSN reviews the logs of  accounts and find it coming from an IP address where PSN isn't available, that's a TOS violation which would get your account banned.

  • You will NOT be banned if you create an account from another country. I have friends who have American and British accounts (I'm from Brazil) since the PS3 generation and to date they have never had any problems. Again, PSN COULD ban the account if it's coming from a country where PSN isn't available.

Still....creating yet another account. And another password. On another platform. On another database. Which can be broken into. Which will be stolen. Which will find their way on the dark web. Gone are the days of just launching a single-player game without needing to login.

Well... I actually own a PS5, too, but it's been collecting dust since Spider-Man 2.  Which was the first game I'd bothered to play on it since God of War Ragnarok.  If Sony would just release their games day-and-date on PC I wouldn't bother with a PlayStation, but I guess that's why they don't do day-and-date.

Anyway, I already have a PSN ID.  I just hate having to login to something else after I'm already logged into Steam, especially when the other launcher is mostly spyware that causes performance dips.  Oh, and then there's-

How many times has Sony been hacked now?  Three?

Yeah, I don't expect anything to be permanent with this, or set any kind of trend going forward.

Best case is probably that they just give up on this game, but remember not to do something this stupid with anything else in the future.

Sony backed off:

In the sense that they're not requiring it for Helldivers, but absolutely requiring it from day one one on PC games released from the moment forward, including Ghost of Tsushima later this month.

Oh, they will do something this stupid again. Gotta feed 'dem hackers with fresh data to mine off the PSN servers.

I'm finally playing the Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty DLC on Series X, it's really good, the story is already far more interesting then the base game. Great mo-cap, excellent characters, newer, bigger baddies, the area of Dogtown itself isn't very big, but it's dense, and there's tons to see and do. A little bummed I missed a sale just a few days before I bought it but oh well, CDPR did really good on this, after years, Cyberpunk 2077 is easily a 9/10, it's an incredibly good RPG now.

Refunds for Ghost of Tsushima on PC are now filtering out. (spoiler'd for size)

Spoiler

It's unlikely Sony will back off like they did with Helldivers.

Yeah, in Sony's eyes their mistake want requiring a PSN account, it was that they allowed the game to go live without enforcing that requirement from day one.

Fortunately, as stated by Sucker Punch, PSN linking is only required for the multiplayer Legends mode. And since I have no intention of touching the multiplayer I'm carrying my pitchfork pretty half-heartedly.

To be entirely fair, if the game had launched with that requirement from the start, they would have been better off, because the people in regions without PSN access shouldn't have been able to buy it at all.

Instead, they sold the game in a ton of countries that never should have had access in the first place, and then were stuck with either refunding them all, or backtracking on the account requirement (for the time being at least).

You're right, in the sense that there'd have been a lot less controversy, outrage, review bombing, etc.  But let's look at it another way- Sony would rather not sell games in those countries than give up on forcing people to use a PSN account on PCs.  Why?  Because the data they can collect through PSN is worth more to them than those lost game sales?  It's still not a good look.

Nope, not in the slightest, and it is gradually driving me away from technology more and more each year.  My next computer will probably run Linux, and my next phone will probably be a classic audio-only flip phone, because I've absolutely had it with the way all of these systems are evolving to just harvest data about every aspect of people's lives.
