Neon Genesis Evangelion

Recommended Posts

Do not know if anyone posted this yet, but I came across this on Anime News Network's front page.

Accused Murderer came to believe that "The ultimate conclusion of evolution is ruin."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the opening statements of a murder trial yesterday procecutors stated that Neon Genesis Evangelion influenced a young man who is accused of beating his mother to death with a baseball bat.

Hiroyuki Tsuchida, 22, is said to have killed his mother with a baseball bat because he believed that it would be easier to kill others if he got over his hesitations by first killing familly members. The prosecutors claims that Tsuchida came to believe the phrase ""The ultimate conclusion of (human) evolution is ruin," from Neon Genesis Evangelion and that he also came to believe that humans were unnecessary being responsible for the destruction of the environment. This brought him to want to kill people.

I remember when the Airplane and Naked Gun movies made me want to crack wise and be silly. I mean, I was only trying to have pun!!!

The judge gave me 10 years, out in 4 for good behavior.

Stop calling me Shirley.

But yeah, stuff like this sucks.

And stuff like this never happens in the US? Wow. Where have I been living all this time then... <_<

Anyone remember the time people blamed Mamoru Oshii and the production team behind Patlabor II for influencing some religious cult to poison hundreds of subway commuters with sarin gas?

They blamed the AUM Shinkrikyo (I forget exactly how to spell it) on Patlabor II? I hadn't heard that one before.

Although interestingly enough, AUM produced it's own manga doujinshi in fairly large quantities. Frederick Schodt wrote about it at length in his later manga book (not 'Manga! Manga!'... 'Dreamland Japan' I think?)

Because if he started with himself, then he couldn't start the 3rd imapct and achieve complementation. Didn't you guys read the RCB. ;) Jokes aside it always amazes me the defenses people come up with to try to excuse such deplorable behavior. The guy had some serious mental problems, and if it wasn't NGE then it would have been some other form diversion ( Violent video games, Porn, Movie of choice Etc.) that would have caused him to murder his Mother.

Well, not really a full-blown accusation, but the movie came out shortly before the attacks. Some people saw a connection because the movie had one scene where an airship crash-landed in Tokyo and released green-colored gas within the vicinity. The troops quickly put on their gas masks and scrambled to get everyone out until one soldier noticed that a dog in front of him was barking instead of slumping down dead.

People look everywhere to find a scapegoat for their own stupidity or cruelty.

Sigh. it makes me sad that this kind of sickness runs rampant outside the US. I mean, here we have people like Johnny Cochran to get people off.

You guys here about they guy they caught trespassign on Arnold's property? He said he was from the future, and he has to stop the machines from taking over. No kidding.

Because we all know the U.S. is the source of all social/cultural evil right? It makes sense that we have sickos but it becomes sad when we "export" the social deviant? I just don't see what you are getting at.

No, despite what you all say, I completely agree.

EVANGELION IS TRASH written by a maniac depressant.

It is a horrible, horrible, cruel, demeaning, and inhumane anime which, to my chagrin, is incredibly popular for reasons unbeknownst to me.

Hell, I'm all for insane violence but there has to be a message, there has to be human compassion and experience - like Battle Royale for example.

Eva is just the bloody stuff of nightmares and insane asylums.

Striker! *strikes woman* Get those people down, and DOWN SAFE. *safe falls*

So we can break laws now as long as we've seen a movie where they do the same thing? This guy is 22 years old. He's not a young impressionable child. He's responsible for obeying the law and if he happened to see a movie that ****ed him up, too bad. That's his problem.

Not trying to sound too creepy..but thats what makes this show popular...Sorry you're not mature enough to handle it.

And in relation to this post. The guy who did this is obviously out of his mind. But then again he could have come up with the same conclusion by watching the first matrix.

You need to watch it a bit more closely me thinks.

edit :in reference to ComicKaze and Evangelion (just in case there was any confusion)

Believe me, I watched Eva in and out and read all the commentaries and the manga. At the end of it all, trying to make sense of it, I found it was totally senseless and time I can never get back. A traumatic experience I can never erase, I can only conclude this is the worst anime ever created (besides the beautiful girls and great music!).

There is absolutely nothing appealing to me in Eva either interlectually or visually and I am the person that has watched American Psycho over 100 times and counts that as my favorite movie of all time. Fine, take wonderful characters and put them in hopeless, nightmarish situations. Torture them, tear them apart limb from limb, and murder the entire population of the world turning everybody into a giant uni-conscious sea entity of LCL except for Shinji whos pathetic-child fantasies and neuroses are finally realized with Asuka being his victim. GREEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAT.

Sure makes me want to slaughter my parents and everybody that treated me badly in school. Heck, if I controlled the fate of the world, the very existence of everybody woukdn't I love to lock msyelf in a girl's hospital room and masturbate to her bandaged body? Oh, just for kicks, everybody will die except for us, except we'll suffer a lot pain but that won't matter anymore. Becuase I am the bringer of apocalypse and the genesis of the new world will be based on me - the traumatized kid whose father abused him and cloned my mother, who I have a crush on, so that he could fondle her to bring about the 3rd impact. Did I mention everybody would suffer my pain?

Hmmm. Nothing new. Oedipus killed his father and married his mother, the Marquis de Sade wrote 100 Days of Sodom (which makes evangelion look like a testament to good morals) and the Bible has more incest and rape than any hundred books. Yes evangelion is twisted, brilliantly twisted - part of the pleasure is just in wondering what is going on and trying to piece together a thought process so radically different from your own - you can also consider it catharsis for the disfigured undead child sputtering with impotent rage within the souls of some anime-fans (particularly the writer of evangelion). Very Post-modern.

I very much respect your opinion ComicKaze - in any medium so many people get blown away by appearances and accolades that they don't think about the meaning of the work. You appear to have thought about it and formed the opinion that is truest to your beliefs.

The only thing I have a little bit of a problem with is the suggestion you agree with the defense in a murder trial.

Violence and brutality is nothing new in any form of art and literature - it's not even worse now than it has been in the past (just more widespread thanks to communications technology). Sadism is older than Sade.

The sad fact is that such works from early times were intended to spend that kind of rage and sorrow within the drama - it was accepted by society that these things were a form of release. Unfortunately at some point people started to get the idea that drama is intended to guide behavior - baloney, that's what teachers, parents, religious institutions, and hopefully your own conscience should be able to do.

The defense is foolish - evangelion warped someone's mind? Should art be taken over by the state and sanitized so that it always tells you how to be a good little citizen? Or should we accept that a good citizen has the ability to hold on to his morals and beliefs despite watching something that might be contrary to them - and there is no excuse for violating those morals.

Besides, what better way to see how truly necessary it is to be good than to see how disastrously and horrendously human perversion concludes - in an endless cycle of need, pain, and vengeance. I would think after watching Evangelion any normal person would want to avoid that kind of existence. Heck, faced with that kind of blackness I became more resolute in my own process of facing down and beating the neurosis in my own life - but then that may be a glass half empty or half full thing. I try my best to use whatever I find to improve myself. Heh, doesn't always work but it makes life a whole lot more hopeful.

Of course, some people are simply evil. Evil will have it's way whatever the inspiration. More than likely he would have killed even if the only anime he had ever seen was Battle Royale.

Besides, do most of us who actually found Evangelion interesting strike you as psychotic murderers?

Sorry. Sometimes I just feel the need to rant. :)

Sigh... I don't really think its anything to worry about ( well, obviously asides from the deceased and the accuseds relatives ). In almost every case of this kind that I've heard of, there is always some other factor that made the person more inclined to react in a violent way to something they read or saw (drug habit, problems at home, etc... )

Frankly, by the sounds of it, it could have been almost any SF-related item from the past hundred years that could have set the guy off; Evangelion isn't unqiue in its bleak outlook for humanity - heck, H.G. Wells had much the same view over a hundred years ago. Besides, if Evangelion really was the direct cause, then we should have been looking at a vast murder spree from the time of its broadcast to the present, and yet this is the first case I've heard of since then...

...frankly, the only desire I had after watching End of Evangelion was a sudden need to grab someone and have them explain what the heck had just happened... ;)

See what happens when you brainwash people with the message of

saving the enviroment

So there you go: Blame it on the Discovery Channel!

...but we don't,...cause saving the enviroment is a good thing

this Kid should be given a medal for his efforts, honorary member of Greenpeace

This is exactly how we can save the ozonelayer, endangered animals, etc,...
