I've never seen it offered for sale before and did not know it existed, but had assumed it did because of the cover on the back of the Japananimation magazine from 1985! It isn't much, but there are 2 previously unseen by my eyes, new UNUSED Macross Box Art pictures. From the look of them, I'm going to credit them to Masato, who was painting with a very strong Takani/Suzuki like impression. The thrill of discovering new Macross art, even after 40 years is very fun!! Masato?
Shawn Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Fixed, geez! Believe it or not late last night I wondered 'did I say Masato?' then said 'nah, no I did not'

Poor Masami Watanabe can't get no respect....
jvmacross Posted March 20 Posted March 20 So thinking Masami for the hanger illustration? It actually makes sense and should have picked up on the VF-1J Battroid as the smoking gun.... Very similar to his other illustration of the VF-1J in "repair"...
Shawn Posted March 21 Posted March 21 That Macross Factory painting was for sale at the crazy expensive Heritage auction, I thought it might have listed the artist? Would be neat if it was Masami. I changed hard drives so my saved off auctions are unavailable. The Macross Package Art doesn't list the artist, says unknown. The 1/170 mini factories are just listed as 'Artmic'. They could not confirm it was Suzuki, so who knows...are they the same style as above?
Shawn Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Found it! They said Shigeru Komatsuzaki Macross Robotech, Valkyrie Science Hangar. Wonder if it is signed on the back? Or if a guess? https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/paintings/shigeru-komatsuzaki-macross-robotech-valkyrie-science-hangar-illustration-peinture-originale-1979-1980-/a/7257-51040.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515

I consulted these images when I was building my 1/72 Armored Factory kitbash/ scratchbuild diorama!
Shawn Posted March 27 Posted March 27 Hey-that Mikimoto book looks like it is printed? Like it is ready to go for real this time?

Shawn Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Now I need to find where the heck I placed my order from! Can't wait to see a few preview pics.

Major Tom Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Thanks Shawn. Amazon JP said it will arrive between April 5 to 14. I can't wait to go through this book.
lavinrac Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Whoa. This release date fell off my Radar. Its out for Delivery by DHL TODAY. I hope it's worth the wait. There's been very little news. AFAIK.
lavinrac Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Well this is quite a book! Its over an inch thick and seems on the first flipthrough to have every 'in color' Mikimoto Macross piece I've ever seen anywhere. Nice to have them in one place I often wish these art books came in a magazine type binding though, so i could flip through them without worrying about breaking the spine. Not a complaint as they all have that type of binding, but it would be a lot easier to do a scan and use something for my phone background without ruining the book. I'm glad this is finally out!

Glad you got yours so soon. My two are on the way now. I was able to get the order with the extra additions, and specifically ordered two for one to look through, and one to keep pristine. I'm sure this book will be on the coffee table for quite awhile.
oshanmacross Posted April 5 Posted April 5 6 hours ago, sh9000 said: From the book. I might be spouting sacrilege, but I don't think Mikimoto ever matured with his digital artwork. His earlier marker and watercolor pieces make his current work look like he is the apprentice taking over from an earlier artist. My opinion only.... And just to illustrate I am not just the old man raving about the good-ole-days I'm eager to see what the first fully AI science fiction film might look like, I think it will redefine the genre. /soapbox

Was sort of hoping it would be more like what they did for the Kawamori Designer's Note....oh well....guess the ultimate Mikimoto book will need to wait....
locidm Posted April 10 Posted April 10 (edited) I got my copy of the Mikimoto book today. It's so thick and uses high quality paper. Each page feels substantially thick. This is only my second Mikimoto book so I'm pretty happy! I gotta say though, I enjoy his art from the 1980's the most. It seems over time his taste and mine grew further apart. Out of the more modern pieces, I like the ones from Macross Ace the best. Otherwise, 1980's stuff please! I noticed that the book does include the fantastic new Ishtar sketch that Mikimoto made for the patch/acrylic stand that would be included in the Macross II kickstarter blu-ray campaign. So something new! Edited April 10 by locidm
Seto Kaiba Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Today's haul... all four volumes of the Macross Frontier TV novelization, both volumes of the Macross Frontier movie novelization, both Macross Frontier short story collections, and both volumes of the Macross Delta novelization.
Graham Posted April 25 Posted April 25 Just received this at work, so only had time to glance through it. Seems to be an awesome book though.
oshanmacross Posted April 29 Posted April 29 I didn't get the bonus stuff, what all was offered as far as bonuses If I may ask?
jvmacross Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Finally received my copy....it's great to have most of Mikimoto's illustrations collected in one massive book, especially the newer Macross the First era stuff, but the majority of artwork can easily be found in the very early illustration books from the SDFM/DYRL era and M7 era....I was hoping the book would include rough sketches, early renditions of the Macross characters, and the colored pencil drawings of many of his works....I guess I will need to wait for the Ultimate Mikimoto Collection book to be released someday....

The bonus booklet is nice, but most of what was in it was originally published within the Macross Perfect Memory book from back when the show first aired....oddly enough, the booklet contains what I was hoping to find more of in the actual book.....
oshanmacross Posted May 2 Posted May 2 @jvmacross Wow, yeah! That stuff should have definitely been the highlight of the book itself.
Shawn Posted May 2 Posted May 2 If you enjoy never before seen pre-production art , pick up the new book ART OF BATTLE – Koichi Ohata Robot Chronicle https://japanese-creative-books.com/product/illustration/art-of-battle-koichi-ohata-robot-chronicle/ 10 pages full of good stuff. I think at least 90% I've never seen before. And if you like Galvion art, there is stuff in here too which isn't even in that Galvion book released a while ago. Go buy this-its cheap and very cool
Shawn Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Couple extra pics-heavy duty bomber (4 arms!) and a exo-type power suit for the Marduk, pretty wild!
jvmacross Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Nice...wonder if this stuff and more will be in the MII book to be included in the upcoming MII BD/4K set?....
Shawn Posted May 6 Posted May 6 I hope so! I actually like the pre-production MII art, it is really cool
