Grayson72
Hi all, I've been in contact with a company called The Model Base (they supply bases directly and through Starship modeller), anyway they've asked me for input on dimensions and ideas for a base for macross models. I thought I'd submit the question here to all my friends for your thoughts (I got their permission first). They make some really cool products for various series, check them out here. www.themodelbase.com So post your thoughts here and I'll send along any feedback. They might be willing to produce more than one type/style/size so keep that in mind. Regards, Chad

Grayson72
No I was asking for recomendations for dimensions for bases to display models like the Hasegawa kits and resin kits.
agass4u
I would love to finally have bases for my models. I hope they have several varients and not just one or two. Are they inquiring about only hasegawa or other kinds as well?
Chas
Hey Grayson thanks for asking. I think for my 1/72nd scale valks a 12 cm base would work well. Do you know if the detail on the top of the bases they make are done in relief or is it just printed on? Do you think that 12Cm would work for the 1/72nd battriods as well? I don't have any built up yet? For a good ref. of the size I am suggesting have a look at the nearest CD. Well that's my two cents worth. Grayson72
They are definately done in relief, you should check out the site. It looks like their standard sizes for bases are 4" & 5", $10 and $15 dollars respectively Edited August 4, 2005 by Grayson72
Chas
Sorry, I had tabbed through their site but most of the shots are dead on top viwes of the already painted bases so I couldn't tell. I guess I just didn't see the image on the home page DOH!
Less than Super Ostrich
This sounds like a great idea. I'd have to go home to measure it out for the dimensions, but 12cm+ sounds right. The obvious choice would be the Macross Logo... or maybe the logo with UN SPacy below. Thanks for pursuing this, Grayson. I'd definitely buy several of these. Grayson72
Anyone have any good pics of the logo with like UN Spacey lettering?
Chas
I think if they are only going to do one then the 'kite' logo is the obvious choice. But if that sells well and they make more I would love to see the Skull Squad. insignia as well as the Zentradi insignia and is there a Meltrandi equivelent? If so that would be great as well. I think all of these would work well in the standard circle-shaped base. (edit: here's what I got if some wants to photoshp it, I gotta go to work now. back in 11 hours.) wm cheng
Great idea Chad! A CD size would be great - I'd personally love to see a clear polished acrylic disc 4-5 inches in diameter by 3/4" thick. The Macross kite logo (without any lettering) would be etched in reverse (maybe 3/8" thick) on the underside (to be seen from above through the clear material). This way we have a flat top to allow aircraft or battroid to sit flat on, but we still have a 3D kite logo to be seen from above, but all would be done out of clear acrylic so it won't detract/draw attention away from the model itself or require finishing. I'd take 4 or 5! All we need is a 1/4" dia. clear acrylic rod!
Druna Skass
No I was asking for recomendations for dimensions for bases to display models like the Hasegawa kits and resin kits. 317320[/snapback] A little miscommunication, it happens... Anyway, is it just Macross bases or would they do Gundam ones as well?
Grayson72
Hi WM, it looks like they only deal in resin. I'll have to look at some of my extra decal sets. I think they have some cool kit designs. I know I've seen some cool ones out there that incorporate the kite design.
Totoro242
Here are some current bases available in some plastic injection mold kits. Maybe they could get some ideas from these. There is no 1/72 scale base. I think there are more 1/100 kits than the other scales for plastic injection mold kits. I think 1/144 is the most popular for Garage Kits. 1/100: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models...i/ar323-46i.jpg 1/5000: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models.../im1225-19b.jpg 1/8000: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models/arii/ar308-9.jpg 1/170 Factory Diorama:http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models...i/ar375-86i.jpg 1/170 Diorama: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models/arii/ar570-4.jpg 1/100 Diorama: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models...i/ar311-22i.jpg 1/20000: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models/arii/ar330-60.jpg 1/144: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models...i/im1247-51.jpg 1/12: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models.../im1433-117.jpg various scales: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models...i/imai_iron.htm
Postman Pat
William, My buddy works in a plastics retailer which deals with acrylics and plexigalss. If you want, PM or email me a specific draft of the idea and I'll ask him to try to do a mock prototype for us. That way, I can find out what costs that would run. Just think a regular size for models and a larger scaled up size for the 1/55 or 1/48s.
Anasazi37
I have the logo and text in Illustrator, which can be scaled to any size and will print cleanly. Best of all, the files are very small. Grayson72
Ok so looks like around 5 inches for a base if you were going to actually set the model right on top of it but what about the size if you were going to stick some kind of rod in it and have an in-flight model displayed above it? Or was that what you all were thinking in the first place?
Kylwell
personally I'd love some triangular bases for putting aircraft on.

hirohawa
I think there should be three bases. The round kite logo and skull sqaudron as well as a rectangular base with the japanese and english Macross Logo from the show. They should also come in two sizes 1/72 and 1/48. I would buy a few sets of these, they look like they are incredible quality.
modelbaseguy
Hello All, I am the owner of The Model Base and let me first say Thank You to Chad for jump starting this thread and getting such interest in my company's products. I wanted to drop by and post a little something to let you all know that we are very interested in giving you some bases that you would be proud to display your wonderful models on. A little background on The Model Base, I will be brief don't worry. I started this company a little over a year ago after many years of building custom bases for individual collectors. Typically I would be commisioned to build and paint a Starship which came with some dinky base. I decided one day that my customers deserved better than that and so I made my first base. It was a rather expensive endeavor but that did not matter, quality is what mattered to me. After a while I started getting emails requesting just the bases from folks who built their own kits. I did a lot of research on the molding and casting process including talking to some the best casters in the garage kit business. I got a lot of helpful info and so I bought some materials and started casting away. The response has been overwhelming and so here we are hoping to continue to serve the modeling community the best that we know how. A brief note about the process, just because I am asked this all the time. First it takes a LOT of cash because the masters are laser cut then a silicone mold is made from that master using only the finest silicone available. After the molds are made we begin casting each base by hand checking for imperfections all along the way. Once again only the finest resins are used because you can tell the difference and like I said, Quality matters most to me. Okay so enough of the corporate junk, lets talk Macross. I am new to this genré of model building but I do have some Gundam and Patlabor kits in my personal collection. I don't have any kind of background info on what's hot and what's not and that is what we base our designs on. I have read through this thread and it seems as though there are a few base designs you guys are interested in and I am sure that we can accomodate you. If anyone would be so kind as to post some picts or links to picts of the logos that you would like to see for the bases I will have my team work on them right away. The "kite" logo is a given but it seems as though there are more designs that would make a cool base. I really like the suggestion by wm cheng about the clear base but unfortunately the clear resins are VERY expensive and it is very difficult to get ALL of the air bubbles out before the resin hardens. We could certainly do this but be warned the price will be more than double that of our regular product line. The idea that the surface be level is one that we have dealt with on our Gundam bases. We realise that most of those kits are standing on their own and need a smooth surface to keep them upright. That is why the relief is only in an outline of the logos and type. Size is another issue but if you guys can come up with a size that will work for the majority of the the available kits then we can accomodate you. Currently we have a 4", 5" and a 6.25" circular base as well as a 9"x4" oval base and a diamond shape roughly 9" across. The last two sizes are used on our super hero bases so have a look to see what I am talking about. These dimensions are for the outer edge of the base the upper surface or "face" of the base is typically .875" smaller so that the 4" base has a surface of a little more than 3" the 5" base is 4.125" on the surface and so on. Hopefully one of these sizes will work for your kits but we will make a custom size if we must, once again quality is our main goal. Well carpal tunnel is setting in and I am sure that you folks are tired of reading this long winded post so I will end it here and just say Thanx and I hope to hear from you all. electric indigo
Here's a proposal for the "kite" base. Should it be even more puristic and loose the ornaments on the side, or does it need more detail there? -i-
