  1. If the design is just an upscaled version of their new HMR, then I think the only thing we can count on being different between this one and the Yamato is that it will have bare-metal landing gear.
  2. Woooooooah. Yes, in for one. Will probably just accept that I'll be overpaying, because this one won't be coming internationally.

Shouldn't be a surprise, because it's identical to their 1/60 announcement.. which is also a dead ringer for the Yamato. ... In fact, I didn't even realize how much it's almost identical. They're using the exact same folding panels under the nose, and the exact same fugly black extensions in the knees in fighter mode. Sheesh. Like.. I'm not going to lie, I'm actually disappointed that this isn't a refined version of their old HM release, or a rework of their YF-19. Both of those designs had some serious potential for improvements over the old Yamato, and they've applied none of that here.
  4. I would just continue to enjoy the YF-19, even if the YF-21 disappoints you. No reason to get rid of something good if it doesn't match something bad.
  5. I think we might be referring to different hourglass shapes? The thing I'm mainly talking about is that the angle of the LEX continues under the canards and sticks out ahead of them. All of the screenshots I posted show that angle starting beneath them, so the angle of the LEX shouldn't appear until behind the canards when seen from above. If you mean the area between the canards on the upper spine, I think that shape is an illusion caused by the canards having an airfoil profile, where Yamato's are almost entirely flat.
  6. Yeah, to be fair, the posing does significantly help the battroid to not look so bad. Their original display just looked kind of pathetic. The hands being fists and gripping the gun also helps them not look so incredibly tiny.
  7. I'll just be happy to finally be able to get a second copy, since my first was missing a part.
  8. Honestly, I'm hitting the point where that's not even guaranteed. After the past few releases, I feel like buying more is rewarding a half-assed effort.
  9. Ironically, no, I think it was Bandai who has forgotten him for.. what is it now, like four years since his 31S, and still no super parts?
  10. Would not surprise me in the slightest.. the design overlaps are seriously starting to hurt my brain. In fact.. it's actually really irritating to think that the HMR is just going to be a repeat of how they released a shrunken Yamato VF-4.
  11. Also, I think what is making it look more contoured is the shadows from the canards, and the profile curve of the canopy. I don't think the shape is any different from Yamato's. I do expect the underside to be very different though, since while the top looks like a 1-for-1 Yamato copy, Bandai did some other things on the belly of their YF-19 design, and I believe this prototype has been around for a long time, since we saw a mock-up in displays going back before the Delta valks were even released, I think. If anything, I expect them to improve on the intake design.
  12. Ok.. uh.. I'm going to be entirely honest here, I see nothing different here from the Yamato. That is the exact same planform, with the exact same proportions. And it has the exact same problem. THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE. STOP DOING THIS. The only modern VF-19 mold that has gotten this right was the old Hi Metal Fire Valk, and it had other compromises involved, but this shape does not look good. It makes the nose too stubby, and honestly just gives me bad flashbacks to how far forward the shape went on the old Bandai 1/65 version. Cut back the angle, narrow or taper the hips, just do SOMETHING to give it this shape instead. Because that is what the art has always shown, and it has been my biggest irritation with the Yamato from day one. Just do something.. anything to reduce that angle, and cut back on the bloated nose. Narrowing the intakes to make them fit wouldn't be that difficult.
  13. I know it's being "picky" but I honestly have a lot of trouble overlooking the things that they're just completely ignoring the "correct" shape of. The tails, the cockpit, just.. WHY? They have nothing to do with the transformation, so you can't even make that excuse. They're just changing things because they feel like it.
  14. Looks a little better when actually posed, but those arms still look stupendously whimpy, and the back end in fighter still looks insanely bloated and oversized. The legs are better than the Yamato, but everything else is worse in every mode. This shot especially. The backend is a full third of the plane. It looks like it slammed hard into a wall, and everything compressed toward the nose. If they shifted the wings, arms, and tails all toward the rear, it would make a huge difference. I also really hate how they're just ignoring every reference for how the nose and cockpit are supposed to be shaped, when they have literally nothing to do with anything that even transforms. *whispers* Hey.. Bandai.. have you seen this before? http://www.macross2.net/m3/macrossplus/yf-21/schematic-yf21top.gif

So when does the betting start on which ones of these don't wind up as vaporware? As much as I want.. well, pretty much all of what they're showing there, I'm most interested in the Fire Valk, just because I am insanely curious about the overall proportions and transformation, as well as the future potential for more YF/VF-19 molds. That one looks much more like a shrunken Yamato than the old HM Fire Valk, which.. I actually have mixed feelings about. There's a lot to like about the idea, but one thing I think the old HM bested the Yamato on was the proportions of the nose section (not the shape), and where the hip panels started. The Yamato's nose doesn't look long enough, because the angle of the hip panels is too shallow, and they intersect the cockpit ahead of the canards... actually, lots easier to explain this with a pic. It comes down to the hip design really, and it looks like this HMR version is adopting the Yamato style of hip joint, separating the triangular flap on this new one. I'd love if they can find something in between the two that doesn't make the nose look quite so stubby. On another note.. I just realized they now have a custom stand for Hikaru's VF-1J as well.. wonder if we're going to have to order a brand new 1J release to get that.
  16. I have hated the lack of a convex set of nosecones for literally as long as I can remember. Looks good otherwise, but that nose desperately needs a rebuild.
  17. I forget who had my favorite "new" take on how to manage the stabs and tails.. I want to say it was the DX9 release? They combined the stabs and tails into one folding panel with the wing control surfaces, and everything folded flat against the back of the wing. It wasn't clean from the back, obviously, but it felt like an improvement over either of the first two MP iterations. There it is. I think this only really works out well in a really small scale, but I like most of what they managed with this design, especially the way the legs open to contain the feet. The weird arrangement of the arms kind of turned me off more than the back kibble, but I liked that they solved the biggest problem I have with so many of the modern seekers: wings and tails full of ugly folding joints. Some are better than others, but they usually don't streamline very well, and they generally go limp over time, leaving everything sloppy and misaligned.
  18. I am glad I was able to find an original Greenscream in good shape not long ago. It just looks so good, even in the inaccurate colors. I think my ideal would be a hybrid of the original MP-3 and the later remold. It doesn't need the strike eagle FAST packs, but when they moved the tails to the legs, they also destroyed the smooth underside. I think with a little ingenuity, they could iterate on that original design and come up with something that hides the tails and stabs in the legs, and still keeps the original intake/shoulder arrangement. For all of the improvements to the legs they've managed over the years, that original arm transformation still feels like the best design they've ever had.
  19. I won't deny there have been some good ones now and again, but what I find kind of baffling is that a lot the highest-end products always seem to wind up the worst of the bunch in that regard. They can really do well when they have room to play with the bot design, but when trying to adhere strictly to a well-known bot design, we generally wind up with things like the new MP Starscream.
  20. Ok, that is literally insane. Clean body, full landing gear, and a functional weapons bay, and it transforms? I want to buy a cargo plane full and airdrop them on Takara/Hasbro HQ with a giant label that says "DO THIS."

The 2SS is such an oddball.. it's really not an aircraft so much as a bunch of of robot parts rearranged to look like one, but nothing actually attaches solidly, and I think that hurts the design as a whole, since it makes it so difficult to build a physical version. Bandai did a decent job, but there's really no helping the fact that nothing on the jet really locks in any way. "Fighter mode" is mostly just a very particular battroid pose.
  22. Fair, and yeah, I'm sure it's much more complicated, since the rough impression I got was from a very cynical old engineer on the verge of retirement.
  23. From what I've heard from people who were involved with the YF-23, everyone knew the 23 was the better plane, but all the decisions got derailed due to some combination of politics, and personal or corporate vendettas. Someone really didn't want Northrop to get the contract.
  24. I'm still really hoping they do a PF VT-1. Would love to see that one with ALL of the markings added, to match the VE-1.
  25. Yeah, I was just looking for those, and found the old listings for the WG + VOB and it's marked down for some reason? Weird.
