STAR WARS Merchandise Episode - 2
Chronocidal replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
That's.... interesting? Is this just because selling a 1/144 speeder on its own would be too silly, and they didn't think of it in time to include it with the AT-AT kit? -
One thing they definitely won't be able to do is stay attached if the Draken is on the landing gear. The 1/72 kits have an extra notch to let the wings tilt inward past vertical, which keeps the little ones from dragging on the ground. The DX version's wings don't quite make it to vertical. Also, I've seen no locking mechanism that'll keep them from flopping down on mine, but maybe I need to look at it a little closer. Either way, yeah, the entire wing section needs some sort of support if you fold those tips up, there's really nothing to hold them in place.

STAR WARS Merchandise Episode - 2

I've never really minded the glassless frames, but I know they're just Bandai's attempt to appease "studio replica" fans. I really prefer the way the 1/48 X-wing, snowspeeder, and A-wing are done, with a snap-on frame over a separate window, but in 1/72 that's usually just too fragile. It's anyone's guess what they'll do on the B-wing (if it ever comes out ). The glass is round enough that they may do it like the A-wing, but I'm pretty sure the A-wing was the only studio model with a full glass canopy. -
3D Model Request - Missile/Ordnance for DX toys

I'm curious what Bandai plans for the 31 super packs, since the pylons look like they should be an integrated part of the arm shields. The few pictures we have of the super packs so far do have what looks like holes in the shields at the points those pylons would mount, but they're definitely two separate pylons on each shield, and the shields will have to rotate to get the missiles facing forward in battroid. -
So the trick to getting the ankles to peg together fully is that there's an alignment peg on either side of the piece that runs down the center of the fuselage. It can take some pushing up or down to get those pegs to line up, but once they click into the backs of the lower legs, it makes it clear where the legs are supposed to sit. I also had to push the shield arm up and down a little to get it to sit correctly between the ankles. Since there are so many joints in that arm to let it fold, it's got a little wiggle room, and I think it needs to be in a particular place to let the ankles come together fully. Far as the Elvis valk goes, I'm hoping to get at least one of both the Hs and Ba in white. Maybe more if I get brave and want to customize one, since they would be the easiest to strip down into a plain white version.

Extremely, really. It makes the 1/48th Yamato nose look pretty small by comparison. Still not liking the shape of the canopy either. Not a huge deal for me either way though. While I'm definitely curious about the pricing, I also know that I have absolutely no room to put something this big, assembled or not.

Curious that they're labeling it as "VF-1S Strike Valkyrie"... Most likely just a typo, but the price does seem more in line with the rest of the Hi Metal R releases that came with fast packs..

Bandai's ability to mold complex geometric sections in a single piece never ceases to amaze me. I would have expected a lot more parts for the head cowling. Come on Bandai, where's my B-Wing and Tie Bomber?

3D Model Request - Missile/Ordnance for DX toys
Chronocidal replied to chyll2's topic in The Workshop!
Unfortunately, those will all be a bit oversized for 1/60 scale, but considering a lot of the weapons for valks are of vague sizes anyway (like the multiple sizes of "sparrow-ish" missiles between the VF-0D and YF-19), it may not matter much to anyone. The baffling thing to me is that they packed the Phoenix missiles in with the air-to-ground weapons. Once the VF-31 super packs are out, I might need to dig into making some reaction missile mounts for the arm shields, since it seems Bandai either forgot about those, or they plan on milking the fans with an add-on pack later. What I really want to do actually is make up some replacement missiles for the VF-171s, and some upgraded pylons for the Arcadia YF-19 weapons. The 171's weapons are generally either rather boring, or comically oversized, and the Arcadia mounts really need some more realistic pylons to give the control surfaces clearance. -
Decals will sit in the box, but I love that white Draken. Might have to get at least one or two more kits, especially if we get a Ba variant in white.
-
I believe the YF-30 is supposed to be entirely level-winged. But yeah, the wings clearly fit in place on both the models and DX with the wings drooped some amount, but I'm mostly curious what the proper angle is supposed to be. The lower angle from the earlier pictures actually looks more "correct" to me, but that might just be a personal preference.

So, I'm looking at the 31F and 31J I have sitting out right now, and I'm actually curious if the sagging wing is the correct one. I actually can't get any of my wings to raise as high as the further-up one, and I've got no obvious gaps or seams in the hinge. I wonder if there are just inconsistencies in the hinges that are making these all different?

I wouldn't cut off those pegs entirely, but check the sizes to see if the ones on the saggy wing are oversized maybe? After my experiences trying to get assorted Bandai valks apart though, I'm tempted to say don't even try it. There might be some smaller bits you can get into, but everything they make seems to be a multi-layered screw-and-glue sandwich. You're more likely to damage the paint/tampo/plastic than you are to get anywhere with fixing the wing. I guess if the asymmetry bugs you, and the gap isn't bad, you could try bulking up the tabs on the opposite wing so they sag evenly.

I dunno actually, there will definitely be some proportional issues I'm sure (the nose in particular), but even Hasegawa's 1/48 kit could be mashed-up into a pretty decent battroid. I'm going to look forward to seeing what people do with this. I might even try to get one, depending on the price. I do wish it was molded in more sections though, even just modding it for super packs will require a ton of hacking into those single-piece legs.

I'm not so interested in the fighter kit so much as I am in seeing how people mod this kit to be fully transformable. Might be heavy, but at that size you've got a ton of room for internal mechanisms too.

If I lived in a place with a better climate (not to mention more storage space) I'd probably jump on the bright white editions, but being in the middle of the desert just makes it extra likely I'll be dealing with yellowed plastic over time. I still think it would be hard to convince myself to double dip on these though, since I've got a pseudo-complete DYRL set in Yamato off-white already. I think if they issued them all with fully tampo printed packs I might cave, since I've never liked using stickers on anything.

I need to retake stock of all the junk I actually have.. it stays packed away in a closet most of the time, but I've got a chance to reorganize this month.. hmmm.

Didn't hear about the Saturn V, or I would've ordered it with my Snowspeeder. Oh well, maybe a birthday present idea for this year. Is it bad that I'm mostly already planning ahead to rebuilding the wings of the Snowspeeder to the right angle though? Might be a limit based on available angles of plates, but the whole vehicle looks too narrow, and the rear boxy things look like they need to be much wider. Edit: Holy cow the Saturn V looks amazing.. I might have to get multiples of it for all those huge white curved plates and circular sections, actually... the fact that it separates into all the stages pretty much guarantees I'm getting at least one.

I kind of wish I'd picked up more Roys in the off white, but I just don't have room to stack that many more. I did grab one spare, but I wound up kitbashing him with a Max 1A to get a Max 1S, and now I've got spare parts for a Roy 1A. -
The thing with Shapeways is that it's going to be a high quality print, but it's also too expensive to use for the prototype stage. You probably don't want to be ordering parts over and over from them as you ensure that things fit together, or it'll get really expensive really fast. That nose looks like a pretty good start though, even with the material as rough as it is. You'll probably want something a little sturdier and smoother for test-fitting parts though, if that's what you plan to do. What's the other plastic nose you have there, a resin kit?

HLJ has been really weird about stocking that, it's like they're getting a trickle of supply from Bandai, or somewhere, but they keep opening and closing the order.

That sort of thing happens to me once in a while, finding something I didn't remember buying, or intending to buy. I actually keep a spreadsheet of my purchases lately, to keep track of which valks I have, and whether I've made any mods to them. -
I haven't changed anything about the transformation, just melted a few pieces together to make them more solid, and strengthened one of the wing supports. I'll work out the details more as I build more of the kits.

The shoulder fins don't actually look bad in battroid, which actually, the 19P is the valk I find myself transforming most often, and leaving in battroid the longest. It's just so pretty. I still need to bite the bullet and repaint one in Focker colors, I picked up a third one just for that purpose. I did actually discover one interesting thing, there's enough room to hide the center laser under the shield, and I think it actually looks even better with just the two side lasers sticking out. I do that with all my 19s though. -
The more I look at the open weapons pod, the more I want to make single piece sets of doors to swap in and out. The little hinges inside and the misshapen doors kind of ruin the look for me. Not that I leave mine out of fighter mode anyway, but you know...
