    This is the latest Matt Chat episode, which usually focuses only on PC gaming classics and developers. However, this time Matt's guest is Robert Woodhead, and the episode is split into two parts. This first part is devoted to Woodhead's latest projects, like some familar Kickstarter business, and the next will focus more on his Wizardry stuff. There is a nice Macross reference 16 minutes in. I wonder if subtitled Bubblegum Crisis is just the beginning? I guess time will tell.

    I don't think this is about skimping on the release. In Japan, GitS 2.0 was released as a BD boxset that included the original version and the CGI enhanced version on separate BDs. This was back in 2008. I have this release. GitS 2.0 was played with and tweaked all over the place, which is why it looks so different in Treatment's pics above. I can only speculate as to Mamoru Oshii's intent with these changes. They seem to align more with the effects in GitS: Innocence than with the first movie. GitS 1.0 was a straight HD transfer with hardly any fiddling, IIRC. I prefer the colors and the clarity in 1.0, even though it retains the old aspect ratio of the DVD release. The 25th Anniversary Edition is the first domestic North American release of this footage. I think it's a very cool release for those who've been waiting. So yeah, it is a six-year-old remaster at this point, but if you didn't buy into the Japanese set early then it's a very good deal.

    Never say never. If Arcadia does well and new engineering techniques are developed that are also affordable, then maybe we will get lucky and see VF/YF-19 tweaks five years down the road. I wouldn't expect them before that. There are too many other designs to revisit and Arcadia is still establishing itself. I really like the new YF-19, even with the ball joints in the feet. Once the company has a number of years and a number of good releases, who knows? If they have their own list of pie in the sky fixes, maybe they will revisit something? Then again, maybe not. That makes sense too, since it was Guld's Valkyrie.

    True, true. New ankles would have been a boss upgrade. I see faces in all of those. I guess I have an odd perspective on this stuff. But what really has me scratching my head is the different outfits. The VF-17s have a flared pant leg and the VF-19s are tapered. I think I remember someone noting that the VF-22/YF-21 is drawn in the likeness of samurai armor, and it really comes across in the artwork.

    Fair enough. I may have misunderstood what everyone was on about. However, most Valkyries do have a human shape. And the Macross 7 Valkyries moved beyond the usual asexual look of SDF Macross and gave them faces and adjusted the form to suit the setting. Along with the usual pilots, we get custom made fighters tricked out to look like a rock band. The idea that the Valkyries themselves are suggestive stand-ins for the band members when they fly out to defend against the Protodevlin is just part of the story. Some people like it and some don't. No worries.

    That's awesome that you were able to get to Tokyo for the summer. I would love to see more unique Valkyries from Arcadia too, but I also want them to get to a place where they can maintain their business without any financial hiccups. I hope the new super cautious release strategy is working in their favor. I do question some of their choices, though. The VF-19 Kai being one. I think we could have used a different Sound Force representative this time around. The VF-1S releases were a nice transition away from Yamato, but in this case I wish Arcadia hadn't ignored Max. If there was one rare Yamato Valkyrie that Arcadia should have released with all the updated tweaks, it was Max's DYRL VF-1S. Anyway, I haven't given up on seeing it eventually. I am very excited for the VF-0D and VF-1J/armor releases that are coming soon. I hope if these do well that we see more releases next year. Or maybe Arcadia will risk more variety in 2015? Either way, it will be interesting to see what they deliver.

    Right. I understood your point too. I was just pointing out that the kites are in the same place and if people want to point and shout, "Breasts!" or whatever word they are comfortable with, then they will regardless. Mecha look like people for a reason, and rule 34 exists for a reason. Some of us are just more creative with our reasoning than others? LoL! It's all good. None of this is hurting anyone, so there is room for every opinion.

    I don't know. I question the strategy to reissue the VF-19 Kai when so many of the Yamato types were still readily available at a heavy discount. Personally, I wasn't interested in double dipping because I picked up my Yamato right before Arcadia's announcement. Now, if Arcadia had announced another 1/60 Sound Force Valkyrie, I would have given them my full attention. Not just because I like Macross 7, but also as a collector. I like the VF-11 (I have the 11B) and I'm drawn to unique Valkyries like the MAXL. Of course, I also would have taken the VF-17T custom. Oops. Double post...Sorry about that...

    No one is questioning the fact that the MAXL is made to look like a woman. The problem I have with the discussion is that the MAXL is somehow offensive or silly because, as a custom, it is more obviously so. There is nothing wrong with it. And, again, it is not pornographic or trying to mimic the organic function of breasts in anime on some ridiculous level. The MAXL's sci-fantasy pods only fend off aliens with light and sound. I maintain that people do not like it because of where it sits within the uncanny valley. Or because Macross 7 turned away from the military/gundam notes of the original SDF series. Again, that's fine. But the Sound Force designs are not poor because more fans in the West are turned off by them.

    The MAXL has no more or less of a chest than any other VF-11 variant. Take another look at the strategic placement of the UN Spacey kites on the 11B and 11C. The Sound Force features on the MAXL replace these in the original line art. However, interpretation does not equal artistic intent. If someone wants to see breasts in their mecha, then they will see breasts in their mecha whether there are kites or just gadgets. I still think it is important to point out that no one is talking about sexualized or pornographic art here. It is just a custom mech that is made to look like a rock star. It's supposed to be fun and entertaining. Besides, other anime old and new, have done mecha with a feminine flair too. I can understand If one doesn't like the glam rock look, or the idea of Sound Force in general. That is fair enough. No one should feel the need to make excuses for that opinion or bring rule 34 into the discussion. But the MAXL is not a silly design. It is different because it provides a function specific to Sound Force, just like the VF-17T and Basara's VF-19. I think Arcadia would do well to release the rest of the squad at 1/60.     Neat! I wonder if these will fix the last of the fiddly bits or if they are just straight repaints of KO version 2?

    Tamiya also has an ABS cement available: Gakken, I agree with mechaninac. I have had limited success with super glue, and use it primarily to fill in cracks with baking soda. I have one Yamato VF-1S with a clean break that goes straight through the pin hinge like your Super Ostrich, and I tried similar glues to the ones in your photo. I wasn't able to get a satisfactory bond using either product and finally went to the local hobby shop. I need to clean the gunk off my pieces before trying again, but I now have the cement/solvent that I need and will let you know how it goes.

    No. The hair is off. Here are a couple shots from Harmy's Despecialized Edition of Star Wars. Even in 1977, Ford had more brown in his hair than black. The figures are still very good, but I look at them as interpretations instead of exact replicas. Chewy is very well done. I think Han is more of an interpretation and maybe Ford has a clause about using his exact image or something. Luke and Obi-Wan meet the Falcon: What a Piece of Junk! Han Prefers a Good Fight to Sneaking Around.

    Shipping is really out there for this one. I was hoping it would be about the size of the YF-19 box. I wonder if it is larger? But even with the high shipping, I think I would have put an order somewhere if my budget wasn't crowded with other things.

    Cool. I just finished the first season of Space Dandy, and I just started Terror in Resonance. I have to build up on Watanabe in preparation for the US Blu-ray release of Bebop.

    NIce fix, Gakken! The modeling solvents and cements should be easy to find at a well stocked hobby shop if you want to try to save the original parts. I couldn't find anything similar at a big box hardware store.

    For me, Rail Wars ranks about equal with High School of the Dead: a simple story with a lot of flash. If you like the characters, then it can be really fun.

    Ouch, Gakken! Those pictures bring back bad memories of my two unsafe Yamato Valkyries. When I replaced my shoulders, I reused the original hinges. You can file down the knurled end or cut it down slightly with a small pair of cutting pliers. The modified pin will still fit and will not deter the hinge in any way when you put the arm back together.

    For recycling actors, it was fun watching Doctor Who and Blake's 7 together. I think Terry Nation liked to call on a core group while working on both shows. And then there was Colin Baker, who appeared in Arc of Infinity before becoming the Doctor himself.

    I thought Russel Davies introduced Eccleston's Doctor in a clever way. Like Hartnell's Doctor from the classic series, we were introduced to this strange, alien character. This time he didn't have any family with him (I never adopted JNT's interpretation of Susan), and it was evident from the beginning that something from his past was haunting him. He didn't start the show with any companions. It took that whole pilot episode for him and Rose to click, and it took one whole regeneration for him to warm up to Mickey. I think Steven Moffat's retroactive additions are part of some plan to answer the questions that Davies left open. Perhaps we will see more of Gallifrey? At the very least I think we will see more Time Lords. Moffat has shown that he has an affinity for nostalgia in his storytelling. He likes to revisit ideas, and he likes to drop hints. Capaldi keeps referencing his character in The Fires of Pompeii. I wonder why that is? And I wonder what we, the audience should be taking away from that cue? Time Heist was a really fun episode. Right on the level with Planet of the Dead, I thought. After a regeneration, the new Doctor has growing pains when transitioning into the role, but I think Capaldi keeps improving with each new week.
