The Cruise Chaser Blassty Repositry
the white drew carey replied to the white drew carey's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
After seeing so many images of Blassty stuff that I've never seen before, I only have two words: "Christ almighty." I wish to hell that Square would get off of their Final Fantasy asses* and make us a new Blassty game! I mean, the designs are still there, and as a mecha fan, I don't mind being the first to say that they are still as valid and marketable today as they were 18 YEARS AGO!!! *I love FF, don't get me wrong, but Square can do Mecha so well (as you all know, I am a FM freak). -

Next trailer to be shown March 11th before the new Dreamworks CGI film "Robots". -
The rendering is excellent, but the movement is a little too "wobbly" for my tastes.

I think the game would be neat to try. For a while I was searching for a downloadable version to play on an emu, but that never panned out. I will admit that I, too, want that book really, really, bad. -

Looks like there's a listing for the game on Yahoo Japan's auctions: http://page8.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h15430603 -
I think we tried this before, but recent o/t interest in a cosplay thread about Blassty has urged me to try this again. Hopefully, this thread will become a repository for Blassty images, information and such, all of which is fairly obscure. Here are the posts from the other thread: Who me? I'm not that EXO.... that's the other EXO from Dirkadirkastan... Actually I want more pics like this: The girl looks like Misato. Eva-01 concept art? Forget the kickstand! Just watch out for The Knock Turn's emmissions! yeah... I don't have the book either... another one of those holy grails. Hikuro- Blassty is like mid-80's. The game graphics weren't nearly as cool as the pen and ink designs. I think the mecha designs for blassty have been, and always will be, my absolute fave. I remember well over 15 years ago my friend had a Japanese hobby mag that had a Blassty model which was literally about 1.3-2 inches tall, yet was incredibly detailed. IIRC, they showed it hanging onto a pencil. Let's keep the Blassty dream alive, don't let this thread die!

Exo- is that from the Blassty book? I have yet to find a copy of that, as I absolutely love the Blassty designs. -

I like yours more. I don't know what he did with that canopy but it's the frame is too large and "bubbly". -
I personally use artwanted.com, at the recommendation of a friend. Although I doubt there is much of a difference. ArtWanted strictly forbids depictions of any genetalia (for legal safety reasons), whereas DeviantArt will allow what is considered "tasteful nudity" in the traditional sense. Both are about the same in price with DeviantArt costing you a $.05 a month less, although ArtWanted lets you sign up for a year at $38. I'm not sure if DeviantArt has that same type of deal.

I think one day Bake Art and I will meet somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. He draws his valk-gals with unnaturally long legs, and I draw mine with unnaturally short legs. It's all about style, I guess. I'm fiddling on my new Wacom tablet with an Armored VF-11 for my next valk-girl.

Kevin/Hamill Involved In Star Wars TV?
the white drew carey replied to EXO's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
True, but I sincerely believe that, before SW books started getting written again in the late 80's, the ones that were written during the OT were probably very controlled by Lucas . Books like SitME, the Han Solo books and, of course, the novelizations of the films. Remember that Lucas was quoted as saying that in reference to the new crop that started with Timothy Zahn's books. As for Smith- Smith rocks! You suck, Mechleader!!! -
Yeah, I missed that aspect of him. I hope he begins to lighten up in the sequels.

McFarlane files for Chapter 11
the white drew carey replied to Jolly Rogers's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Tell me about it. This is kind of crap is what allows people like Spike Lee to sue networks over a name. Remember, though, Spike Lee lost that case. ...but the fact that it even went to court and held up SpikeTV's launch date and costed them millions is beyond comprehension. BTW, Spike Lee was instrumental in taking black cinema beyond what it was in the 80's and far beyond the blaxploitation fares in the 70's. So the fact that he's an egomaniacal tool doesn't mean he's talentless. He also discovered and rediscovered a lot of the talents we see regulary today. But of course it went to court. From what I understood of the case, Spike Lee made no attempt to persuade TNN to NOT change their name to SpikeTV. He simply went to court and filed a lawsuit. Since no out of court solution was sought after by either side, TNN made the proper decision to wait until the matter was settled in court before changing their name. Therefore, no out of court agreement means that, of course the matter went to court. Judges rarely, if ever, throw out even the most frivolous lawsuit without hearing the arguments and seeing some preliminary evidence. In fcat, IIRC, the Spike Lee vs. TNN matter was closed fairly quickly by legal standards. Remember that non-criminal matters in court take time. This McFarlane vs. Twist matter has been going on for well over 4 years now. -
I'm curious what plotholes you're referring to? I had no problems with plotholes, but then again, I'm familiar with the sotry. But both my wife, my friend and his wife understood it perfectly fine. The only thing I needed to explain to them were certain words and phrases which have specific meaning in the Appleseed universe.

Kevin/Hamill Involved In Star Wars TV?
the white drew carey replied to EXO's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Crap- I forgot to post on the thread itself!!! Anyhow- What I would really want to see is something in regards to a mixture of X-wing and Jedi-related stories. But I wouldn't want the show to stand-alone episodes at all. If there's one thing 24 has taught us, it's that it's not hard at all for a dedicated team to do a season long story arc. That would be cool- Event takes place, Jedi investigate, fighter pilots investigate, everyone goes to town in a big old multi-character adventure. That would rock. -

No, I'm afraid that the books override any fanfiction you can muster, despite what the guys on Stardestroyer.net might have to say about it. Yeah, I was always under the impression that it was some type of star system- either forming, or the opposite, throwing matter out into space as the star rotates (not an unknown phenomenon even in '80). Secondly- 1BRD, you may call the books wrong, but the Director's Commentary? How can the director be wrong? -

Meh... no skin off my dick. Frivolous lawsuits don't bug me as long as they 1) Don't directly and adversely affect the public interest, and 2) aren't paid for out of the public's pockets. For all the people who are saying the lawsuit was BS, let me ask you one thing: Have you all personally viewed the evidence which allowed the court to make this decision, or the evidence which caused the U.S. Supreme Court to throw out McFarlane's appeal. Do you think this lawsuit would be less frivolous if the situation happened to be that McFarlane created a character named Michaelino "Michael Jordan" Jordano? Regardless of who it was, I'm guessing that adequate evidence was presented in order for the courts to rule in Twist's favor. -
Well, I just finished the movie and I say "Two Thumbs Up!" Although there were some wonky moments in regards to the animation I think, overall, it was visually astounding. I really had no problems with the cel-style characters in conjuntion with 3-D backgrounds, I think they look great and am very pleased with the final results. As to the story: Yeah, they packed details from about all 4 volumes in and added some stuff that Shirow hasn't even included yet or simply made it up, but I still think it works well. What I think works best is that it blends the existential treatment that so many directors try to portray in Shirow-derived works with lots of well-choreographed action. If you looking for a visually-stunning mind-blow, with little action, see one of Oshii's GitS movies. But I'll be the first to readily admit that they tend to be boring as hell if your not in the right mood. Appleseed, on the other hand, encompasses both aspects fairly well. As for the music, I had no problem with it. I actually liked it quite a bit and wouldn't mind getting the soundtrack. Unlike others, I didn't feel it was a distraction to the scenes. In my opinion, I think it worked so well because it wasn't your typical crappy action music. Appleseed: 4 1/2 out of 5 Bonapartes.

Scratch that, I got the subs working.

I've got it, but I'm not seeing the subs. I'm running it on my Mac 10.3.6 using VLC 0.8.1, which is set to autodetect subs and I'm just not seeing them. Any ideas?
