General (1/12, 1/18, 1/24 Scale) Action Figures Thread
tekering replied to no3Ljm's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The cloth, the accessories, the sculpts, the skin tone, and especially the paint work on the faces is far beyond what I've ever seen on figures at that scale. Hell, these look better than most 1:6 figures do! The price might even have been justified, if only the likenesses resembled the actors more than their stunt doubles... -
The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread

I did consider adding a tattered cloak, actually... but that would be gilding the lily. ๐ Although, now that you mention it, the last toy I dirtied up so extensively was a Bayverse figure: I suppose a more realistic paint job will automatically dredge up associations with the live-action films.- 9411 replies

The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
tekering replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
So, as someone who collects Transformers as character merchandise, this was an extremely atypical purchase for me: Toys Alliance Archecore ARC-02, "Frost Light." Basically, I bought it for the bad-ass vehicle mode. It has a distinctly Mad Max-vibe to it... ...or rather, it would, if it weren't so clean. So I spent a couple hours with an airbrush, a sanding sponge, a bottle of panel-lining solution and a Q-Tip... ...and I think the results speak for themselves. It's actually kind of exciting, having a figure with no established identify within the Transformers franchise. He could be a good guy, a bad guy, or just a mercenary with no allegiance to any specific faction or ideology. So now I want to add more similarly-scaled armored vehicles to this new collection I've begun. What other D-list Transformers (or unique third-party figures) fit this "post-apocalyptic wasteland "aesthetic? I'm thinking Hunt for the Decepticons Axor, or Reveal the Shield Lugnut, perhaps... ๐ค- 9411 replies

So... the entire purpose of that teaser was to spoil the climax of the first film... ๐คข ...only to retcon the hero's death like a slasher film sequel? ๐คฎ

Jean-Pierre Jeunet... Darren Aronofsky... even the Wachowskis would be a solid choice, I think. I generally prefer relative unknown actors to casting big stars (and all the baggage from previous roles they bring with them).
-
Seriously? Waititi seems like a wildly inappropriate choice to me, akin to asking Kevin Smith to do The Ten Commandments... or Rob Zombie to helm the next Dora the Explorer movie.

Amazing as always, @Mog! I made this knife out of foam and sheet styrene for my costume: However, it didn't survive the evening's activities.

That yellow is striking, but completely inconsistent with the color schemes Tatsunoko employed with the Zor... or even what Sunrise had done with Mobile Suit Gundam (its most obvious progenitor).

I keep everything. I can already see this eventuality. It'll become impossible to find (or even access) many of the boxes, I'm sure... I would never dare show my wife. The attic remains safely inaccessible to her. ๐

Good for you, Noel. Imminently practical. I'm afraid ErikElvis has only about 1/4 of the collection I have... ๐ฌ ...if that.

So, has anyone seen the new Star Wars animated series? The lighting and production design looks a lot like The Bad Batch... ...but the character designs are closer to the early Rebels episodes... ...and the droids are distinctly Clone Wars-era. Funny thing is, despite the reference to the Outer Rim, a hologram of Janeway shows up in the last 16 seconds of the episode...! Silly show thinks it's Star Trek or something. ๐

Regrettably so. Even more regrettably so. Like, say, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Like, say, Jupiter Ascending. My expectations were probably too high going into this (despite my lukewarm reaction to Blade Runner 2049) because of my familiarity with the source material, the marketing hype, and all the praise heaped on the film. I agree the cast is uniformly strong -- unquestionably the film's greatest strength -- but Jason Momoa felt a little out of place, bringing too much 21st century sensibility to the 102nd century setting the other characters seemed to inhabit. Of course, we knew that from the trailers (and presumably, his Duncan Idaho was deliberately written that way). In fact, virtually everything fresh and different about this version -- casting, production design, even the new bits of dialogue -- was present in the pre-release advertising, leaving very little novelty to the experience of actually watching the movie. For a film over two and-a-half hours long, I was expecting more content than what the trailers presented... and there really wasn't. It's a footlong sandwich with delicious bread, but surprisingly little meat.

The wand is $125... The backpack it attaches to is $400 (provided at least 7000 people pre-order one)... Presumably, the hose to connect the wand to the backpack will cost an additional $75, and will be a Hasbro Pulse exclusive.

Villeneuve's Dune is a lot more restrained than Lynch's vision. While it shares (and often exceeds) the epic scope of the '84 film, the production design is considerably more muted in its color schemes and architecture. It's a much more convincing future world, but it's not nearly as striking or memorable as how Lynch envisioned it... particularly given the absence of a monstrous third-stage Navigator. Think of it less like Star Wars and more like Blade Runner. Knowing the film was only covering the first half of the book -- and thus had twice as much run time to tell the story -- I was actually shocked at how much material was excised, far beyond the mere absence of characters like Princess Irulan, Feyd, or the Emperor himself. While I was happy to see a lot of awkward dialogue removed ("mood is a thing for cattle and women," "no woman-child ever withstood that much," "the sleeper must awaken," etc.) I was equally dismayed by how much exposition and backstory was sidelined, if not outright ignored. As a sci-fi geek, I know full well about the Butlerian Jihad, but isn't the average viewer likely to wonder why there's no artificial intelligence in Dune? Or what a Mentat is? What about the Navigators, or the Spacing Guild? The art of Kanly? Suk Imperial Conditioning, and why Dr. Yueh would've been above suspicion? Hell, they barely even mention the function of the spice, the central concept that drives the plot. I'm surprised viewers like @mikeszekely weren't left cold and befuddled by the lack of proper world-building.

So they are. Cheers, dude! I stand corrected. Yeah, and now that I've ordered one I'm sure it'll turn out too small to scale with the 1:10 figures...

1:10 scale? One-TENTH? ๐คจ If it were 1:12 scale, like my Justice League Batmobile, my Animated Batmobile, and my R/C Tumbler, I'd have been all over this. It would've scaled with Mattel's Batman figures from The Dark Knight trilogy... It would've scaled with McFarlane's retro Batman '66 line (and Mattel's, too, for that matter)... It would even have scaled with Hot Toys' massive replica of The Bat from The Dark Knight Rises.

New Robotech Blu-ray coming soon from Funimation
tekering replied to fifbeat's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
With all due respect, the resolution and clarity are far beyond what DVD upscales are capable of: While I prefer the contrast ratio on the Japanese BDs (which were clearly struck from higher-quality prints), these Robotech Blu-rays are clearly true 1080p remasters as well. But what of the Southern Cross episodes...? -
This is about as heavily-weathered as I'm willing to go: I don't imagine any other areas will show nearly as much impact damage.

STAR WARS Merchandise Episode - 2

Thankfully, Robot Kingdom often sells Target and Walmart exclusives through their Hong Kong-based Web site, so those of us outside the US don't always have to rely on the secondary market. I see they have the Target-exclusive Droids repaints available now: https://www.robotkingdom.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Droid+Animations -

That's precisely why I asked, see. That's how the kit was designed; those light grey parts are molded in that color, just as the two-toned yellow boxes on the hip skirts are, and the vac-metallized silver on the back of the knees, and the shiny gold of the vulcan cannons on the head... If he did paint it, he painted every part exactly the same color the kit came molded in! ๐คจ It doesn't reflect the animation, or any of the video game renders, or any other Gundam reference material. It's a distinct color breakdown unique to the Perfect Grade Unleashed, intended to provide depth and detail without requiring any actual painting. That's exactly how the stock kit looks -- with all the stickers applied -- and painted versions I've seen locally don't look like that. I mean, if you're happy with the aesthetic, I suppose it doesn't matter if anything was actually painted or not... I just want to make sure you're getting what you paid for. -
