  1. Cool! Welcome aboard
  2. VF-15 Banshee, I don't know where you heard that, but that is completely wrong. They were not "abroad to promote Macross". I spoke to Mari directly about this years ago and she personally told me that they were in Sri Lanka filming the promo video for Mari's song "1 Gram no Shiawase" and for her video compilation "Marron". Many of the photographs shot there also appeared in the accompanying photo book of the same name, and as artwork for her compilation album "Variee". I don't recall if Mari said that she herself was a fan of Clarke, or a staff member was, but she definitely knew of him, and so they all popped over to his house and he happened to be at home, so the took some pictures together. As a side note, it irks me when misinformation spreads so easily, and in this age of information and social media, the whole process is accelerated, so "I heard" becomes fact, and before you know it, I have to spend literally decades correcting people, like with the whole "AnimeFriend/StarPro" thing.
  3. Yeah, I never read that in any of the official interviews or anything. Uh oh...
  4. Hang on, the Shudista box set only came out in May of last year, so it hasn't been as long a couple of years ago! Stop making me feel old! (Actually, wasn't it one year almost to the day??)
  5. I have it from a good source that the Kawamori exhibition will be completely different to the Macross exhibits of the past, because they are actually going back to dig through all the stuff that's been in his house for decades and never saw the light of day in public. For example, the fabled "Kawamori Memos", the 100+ notebooks that Kawamori filled with sketches upon sketches of mecha, with each page being a subtle variant, clearly showing the evolution of one design, which Miyatake had alluded to in the Making of Macross documentary. Those things are the stuff of legends, and if that is any of the indicator of the sort of caliber of the things on display, it will be an incredibly worthwhile exhibition. Actually, this probably warrants a separate thread...
  6. Primus1X -- I think the joke is because "Pitch black" in Japanese is "Makkuro" and therefore similar to Macross ("Makurosu"); it's a pun. EXO -- Cool find! Isn't there a member here with those androids as his avatar? It's more relevant than anyone gave it credit for!
  7. Some tiny tricklings of mini-news... Superhuman Drawing Dynamo Hidetaka Tenjin-sensei has posted on Facebook that he went over to Satelight to get his designs for the new series checked, and revealed that they are "full of gimmicks". But of course, being a modest craftsman, he phrased it as "they end up being full of gimmicks.... I'm hoping to learn from K-sensei." Tenjin worked on some designs in Frontier before, but this time he's in charge of some "major ones". Not to worry, though, he also (re-)confirmed that the Valks themselves will still be handled by Kawamori, as per Macross tradition.
  8. Wow, I've never seen that book before!
  9. Yeah, I remember I took a photo of me *holding* it, but that was before digital cameras, so I don't know where that photo is now, either! Anyway, here is one of my latest acquisitions which I *didn't* paint! Just need to find a nice frame and display it now... Which is easier said than done...
  10. Yeah, I had one of those Macross Cel Painting Kits, and I did paint two of them, but I didn't paint directly on the cel. Instead, I did the smart thing and actually traced the lineart onto a blank cel of my own and applied the paint directly to that. I was actually quite pleased with the results. I did one of Minmay laughing after she and Hikaru were rescued from under Macross City, and one of Minmay sleeping with her head on Hikaru's shoulder. What's funny is that the colouring instructions actually give the wrong colours, the uniform that Minmay wears after her shower is supposed to be olive-like, but the kit tells you it's white. Well, I decided to go for the more screen-accurate one. It should be somewhere in my mother's house in the UK, but I don't know where.
  11. Oh, I forgot to mention that the main setting is the "Macross 11 Fleet"
  12. Yeah, they're pretty standard, mostly used when a series is new for people to understand the dynamics and conflcts forming the basis of the story, at a glance.
  13. As you may know, I'm far more interested in the production background and history of the series than the actual content in most cases.... In fact, knowing how some things came about greatly amplifies my interest in the way the story of each series pans out, as well as how and why certain scenes were composed the way they were. Anyway, I just thought I would put up a few bits of Frontier behind-the-scenes trivia that I hadn't seen mentioned before on these pages. In no particular order: 1) The working title for the series was actually "Macross Quarter". In fact, I did mention this a few years ago in some other discussion. I was first made aware of this in the annotations to some rough Vajra designs seen in Animage Original (I believe it was issue #2). The special MacF feature in that magazine is still one of the best write-ups, and we discussed it quite a bit on the forums. My friend actually wrote it, and he had some really interesting things to say about it. 2) Originally planned to be 26 episodes. Well, this one is no surprise, as a two-arc proposal, 26 is standard. I suppose Kawamori "figured" out that the 25 motif could be used to spare some expense and labour, i.e. cut corners, i.e. be lazy Ah well, we did get two movies (well, one and a half) so who's counting? 3) Target audience: Male & Females, teens to 30s. Well, I don't have the stats but I believe most of Macross World is out of this range. I'm not, though, I'm still hanging in there Go back to watching SDF, gramps! 4) The story is set in 2088. That's 80 years from the original broadcast. Funny, MacII was set 80 years into the future of the setting of the original show.... 5) Brera comes from the "Antares Fleet". In the finished show, he is part of the Antares Squadron, but is from Macross Galaxy fleet. I'm wondering if Sheryl and Brera actually have totally different backgrounds in this, and they decided to make them both originate from Galaxy at a later date. 6) Kazutaka Miyatake's Macross Quarter rough design looks incredible. I want a toy of THIS one! I never liked the real Macross Quarter design. I have nothing against Junya Ishigaki, but I always thought it was a bit too messy, especially that "cruiser" mode. :/
  14. Why do people love Fleet of the Strongest Women? I like it too, but I just don't understand why the people who think Basara is annoying and/or the concept of M7 is silly, hold THAT up as an exception? Should I remind you that in that almost-completely-lacking-in-story episode, Basara bitches and moans and then launches a giant speaker into a capital ship and belts out his song and the aliens then find him irresistible and so all turn into screaming groupies...? I think it's a lot of fun, but THIS is what you want?? The main series is somehow worse?? REALLY?
  15. So "Newbie and Short Questions Thread" means "Spoilers and Plot minutiae" now? Hey new guys, you should watch these cartoons so you can argue over them pointlessly like we do!!!
  16. Great idea guys! While we're at it, why don't we mix it together with episodes of G Gundam and Escaflowne? Those will certainly help improve the drama. And have a narrator that explains EVERYTHING, ALL THE TIME, because I'm sick and tired of people saying that sound doesn't travel in space, and not understanding sound energy and Project M, etc... Oh, also let's change the concept of Anima Spiritia to.... erm... I GOT IT! A TYPE OF FUEL. ...... Please let us learn from the mistakes of the past, that is all I humbly ask.
  17. Then you just throw Max in jail, too. Problem solved. This being a Newbie thread, I'm not so sure it's a good idea to go into deep analysis of each show, lest people instill prejudices into newcomers who have not seen these series. Just let them watch the show, and if they want to talk about it, then they should start the discussion. I don't think that's what this particular thread is for.

    Sunwards Valkyries

Wouldn't that have been Toycom, rather than Yamato?

The one on the left is a test shot, on the right is the coloured prototype. Is it me, or does the white abdomen piece look a little shorter on the test shot? I like it better that way. Not sure if I will get this, though. I never liked Bandai's practices of always bringing out product to compete with Yamato/Arcadia. They've been doing it since 2001 or so.

    Sunwards Valkyries

Thanks EXO!! Treatment, you're right, I meant the first generation VF-1 toys, but for some reason I labelled them 1/72 in my mind. 1/60 to me is Macross toys "Now" so everything from back in those days just got jumbled up into 1/72, even though it was really only the Plus valks when I think about it. Thanks. Mommar: They were planning to get away with it because they figured a license direct from BigWest based on the designs which were proven in court to be theirs would trump the roundabout license that HG had gotten via Tatsunoko. Maybe it would have but my understanding is HG challenged it anyway and they got cold feet.

    Sunwards Valkyries

I'm sure older members here remember the Sunwards fiasco. It was basically Yamato's attempt in the early 2000s to circumvent Harmony Gold and try to get their 1/72 VF-1 product out there without using either Macross or Robotech branding. As an interesting comparison, Bandai did just that in the early 1990s with their European version of the 1/55 Super Valkyrie reissue, with no problems. I'm looking for any archived data on Sunwards, who was in charge, if anyone has their website saved, or even an image of the ad they took out in ToyFare, etc. Thei website is long gone and doesn't appear to be saved anywhere, and I cannot find any images, either. Most of the photos they used in their PR material are the stock Yamato photos anyway, but the phrasing they used to promote the toys I recall was very interesting.
  22. To each their own, but I prefer both Mac7 and Orguss to the original SDFM series, they're pretty much my favourite anime series. Also, design-wise, the Orguss had those pointy shoulders and hip-wings before they were "hip-ster".
  23. Finally attempted to transform it. I did Gerwalk and Flyer, but not the Tank mode yet. That was quite a nerve-racking experience. I'm actually quite worried about the internal mechanisms, since there is a lot of tiny bronze plastic parts. I hear a lot of woe from TF fans who hate that because it's s brittle. In my experience, the Proto Garland by Yamato completely crumbled because its joints were that sort of plastic. I don't know if this is exactly the same material, but I'm very cautious. Other than that, I have an issue with the left shoulder pauldron, it's on a hinge that seems to have been twisted in a weird way, so it's actually at a strange angle. It's not that noticeable, though. Apart from paint issues on the die-cast parts, it's a fine toy, though. No floppiness at all so far. It's big, chunky, sturdy and heavy, and yes, I will most likely be getting an Olson if they make one... which they will, judging from all the praise this figure is receiving online (both in English and Japanese). I for one, want more.
