  1. Because Yasunori Honda and Shoji Kawamori wanted it gone. They said the opening strands of the DYRL song had more impact without that BGM playing beforehand. I disagree, but they did explain it. In fact, I went into detail on this subject several times here, mostly in the previous DYRL BD thread. Oh, actually I even made a whole news post about it: http://www.macrossworld.com/the-men-who-made-macross-special-airs/
  2. VF-11 is the perfect Valk. That's why he hasn't updated it. ANYWAY... In other news... Calling Operator 7G! MEGAZONE 23 will get an all night screening -- all three movies in full on the big screen-- on November 7th to celebrate the release on BD of the entire trilogy!! Details: http://animeanime.jp/article/2015/10/07/25214.html I expect the SPEAKERPODCAST crew to be there like the dutiful zealots of Bahamut!
  3. I'm the only one who prefers the Yamato version, huh... I like it because it looks more like the Koenig Monster lineart to me. The Bandai looks a bit like a more deformed, cutesy version of the Koenig. And the legs/feet are just wrong on the Bandai. I will agree that the Bandai one seems much more solid, though.
  4. Kawamori was on TV today talking about his new "pretty girl" -- it's Thunderbird Shadow! What better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of possibly the most influential thing on Tokusatsu and Japanese mecha design than to invite one of the most eccentric creators in Japan onto the franchise?
  5. I don't think Tatsunoko has anything to do with it. AFAIK they don't pay Tatsunoko a dime for VF-1 molds, because Tatsunoko was only contracted to do the animation. And even if they did, the case of FB2012 is actually infamously different, because even though technically they used Tatsunoko animation in that OVA, they never got a credit, so FB2012 has always been a major point of contention. If you think about it, Tatsunoko could have sued BW back then in 1987. They waited until much later, though. With regards to the toy itself, I welcome it.... provided it's not too far out of my price range. The original VF-4 came out at the same time as the VF-19P so I had to make a choice and the VF-4 lost out. While I never regretted my choice, I was always hoping for another chance at the VF-4, and now I might have one, so I'm happy.
  6. We had to drop that section for time. There's just too much Macross stuff happening!! I'll tell you what I've been watching recently: Aquarion Logos: At this point it's almost nothing like the other shows, so worth checking out if you didn't like them; if you did, well, still might be worth checking out for the concept, it's rather clever. Shimoneta no gainen ga sonzai shinai taikutsu na sekai: Superbly over-the-top satire of censorship Lupin III Part 4: Best thing on TV right now, anime or otherwise Tico of the Seven Seas: One of my favourite of the "Masterpiece Theater" series. Also Space Cobra, Steins Gate and Patlabor are on reruns now. EDIT -- It's finished its run already a few months ago, but the best TV series was "Shirobako", if you haven't seen it already stop whatever you are doing and watch it right now. We totally should do an entire non-Macross podcast just on that!
  7. I'm calling it.... VF-4G LIGHTNING!!! PLEEEASE!!
  8. As I explained in the other thread, the official Bandai Visual product description says that the HD master has been "brushed up" to give an even higher picture quality. And we already know it is not a straight reissue of the previous release because it is not a Hybrid disc, plus it has an all-new audio commentary. https://bvc.bandaivisual.co.jp/shop/itemdetail/BCXA-1058/
  9. If you have time to listen to it, VF5SS and I covered the whole range of Yamato Macross toys up until they went under. It's a decade's worth of toys, so it goes on for a bit. Hope it helps: http://www.macrossworld.com/podcast-retrospective-on-yamato-macross-toys/
Animate Exclusive edition will have "Jacket-sized illustration cards", Amazon will have the special case (I looked into it, it's actually just going to be an outer box, not really a "3-fold case" as I described earlier, sorry), and Tsutaya will have an original "bromide", which is basically a high-quality image on photo stock paper. I already ordered the Amazon version of DYRL... Not sure what to do about the others. I love that M7 movie, but one half-hour BD... I'm quite on the fence about that. Frontier doesn't really draw me in and MacPlus is somewhat bland at this point. Or I might just break down and get them all. I don't know what to do!!
  11. Recent interview with Miyatake on working on Orguss, that came with the Megahouse Hi-Spec toy. http://www.macrossworld.com/kazutaka-miyatake-interview-from-megahouse-variable-action-hi-spec-orguss/
  12. Last weekend's talk event write-up (in Japanese) http://macross.jp/news/?id=81
  13. The content is the same. It's one of the incentive editions. The Amazon exclusive version comes with an 3-fold case, the Tsutaya exclusive comes with some other stuff, etc.
  14. I translated another Miyatake interview, this time focusing on ORGUSS. I put this up on the front page, but the auto-link discussion thread that is usually created ended up being buried in the "Collectors" forum for some reason. Anyway, check it out: http://www.macrossworld.com/kazutaka-miyatake-interview-from-megahouse-variable-action-hi-spec-orguss/
  15. Yeah, it's nice, but why does Sheryl have a Sailor Moon tattoo? I mean, obviously I know why, but that kind of breaks the whole illusion.
  16. Me too. We have a couple of hints, though. 1) It is not a "Hybrid Pack", meaning it will not be marketed as a game this time, and therefore perhaps standards are different dictating content. 2) It has been announced as having improved visuals, as the "HD visuals have been even further brushed up to give a better high-quality image!" If they're going in and changing things yet again, then that tells me there's a possibility that they have removed the censoring. Wishful thinking at this point, though.
  17. Huh. That's weird. Basically, that says that neither the second Frontier Movie "Sayonara no Tsubasa" nor the Macross Plus Movie Edition will have English subtitles. How did you phrase the question? Did you only ask about those two titles? If not, is there any reason why they would pick those two in particular instead of simply stating that none of the five will have subtitles?

They're a little small, but I think they work just fine. That's a Revoltech Max for good measure.
  19. I actually don't care about good story and great characters. All I want is great animation that will make me gasp in amazement and fantastic music that will make me groove out! For me, the story and characters would be the cherry on the top.
  20. VF5SS and I podcasted on the history of Yamato a couple of years back (not really part of the SpeakerPODcast canon, though, this is The Veef Show on CDX). It might help? http://www.macrossworld.com/podcast-retrospective-on-yamato-macross-toys/ Hmm. I know what you mean, but I don't think that would work... They actually lip-synched the animation to the songs they used, so replacing them would be very difficult... At least if you wanted to do it to a convincing degree.

Just build half of the army you were planning.
  22. That wasn't a model, it was a toy. It was 1/60 scale. And it wasn't 1990, it was around 2001 (Yamato didn't exist in 1990). Those were marketed as 3-step transformation 1/60 scale VF-1 valks. You needed to parts-swap the heatshield and remove the legs to transform. A couple of years later, they released the 1/48 VF-1 series, with all of that integrated. From 2007 or 2008, they released a totally new VF-1 mold in 1/60. It transformed pretty much the same as the 1/48, with all the integrated features. The official product name this time was "Complete Transformation 1/60 VF-1 Valkyrie", often translated as "Perfect Transformation". Arcadia has been re-releasing these recently. I hope this helps. You should ask in the Newbie Toy Thread in the Toy forum for more info.
  23. Listen, if Macross toys were anything but super-niche items, I would have in my possession an Ozma type YF-29, and that's coming from someone living in Tokyo. I never saw one on the shelf or even online that was not sold through a jacked-up reseller (read: scalper), which I refuse to pay. Kotobukiya, a major store in Akihabara got like THREE or something. We are talking about the inner sanctum of otaku culture on this Earth, and *three* in that shop... yeah, any more niche and you're basically asking Kawamori himself to sculpt one for you.
