  1. I would agree with that. I got them for the collectability factor, but I suppose they could have used better images. If anything, I probably should have gone for the Tsutaya exclusive editions, which come with art postcards. Those would have been a pain in the neck to track down for me, though. I'd rather order them online. Technically they are the same fixed list price, though. It's just that Amazon is selling the regular edition cheaper than the list price, while their exclusive version has not been reduced.
  2. I think Tochiro mentioned the other day that they were characters from one of the Delta manga tie-up publications. Of course, he would have cleared it up long ago if he were here, so we wouldn't have to be guessing and speculating. Kind of goes to show how in the dark we all are without him... Just sayin'
  3. Thank you for the feedback! Yeah, we do talk about toys from time to time, but not regularly and not in a review format, usually it's more of a behind-the-scenes report kind of thing. We've done reports on Yamato and Mr K., on how Arcadia decides their pricing, and Save went all-out on his piece on Evolution Toys a while back. I don't know why, but I feel rather unenthusiastic talking about a toy in front of a mic, for some reason. It's probably because personally I've already said everything I wanted to say about them: if you go back to some of those old SpeakerPODcast and Veef Show episodes where we talk about the Yamato showrooms and the history of the 1/55 and the Yamato retrospective, I think that's pretty much still rather definitive, and now the new toys are really just little footnotes to add to that. That is why a lot of times Tochiro would ask, "So, you got the VF-0D, how is it?", and I'd be like, "yeah, great, whatever", even though it is a really good piece! That is totally my issue and I don't want it to reflect badly on the toys (or the podcast!) so I tend not to even try. It might be a different story if we do actual toy reviews with a camera, but then there are already MWers who do a great job, plus there's CDX, so... That said, we DID do an ENORMOUS podcast about a year ago pitting the Bandai VF-19ADVANCE versus the Arcadia YF-19, but that was never uploaded. Technical difficulties. Hopefully that will see the light of day at some point. Anyway, toy releases and news have picked up recently what with HiMetal R and Delta, so I'm sure at some point we will have to talk about the VF-2SS, VF-4 and Regults and Glaugs and Monsters and all things nice, sugar and spice.
  4. Not airing, it's a limited theatrical screening. And from what I hear, it's really tough to get tickets to. If we get in, we'll report on it ASAP, though.
  5. Fair enough. I guess at the end of the day, that's the purpose of that movie, so it served it well.

    That "dude" is Kazutaka Miyatake.
  7. Are you using that example as a rebuttal, or an acknowledgement, of Tochiro's point? I honestly cannot tell.
  8. I believe that was the entire point. To provide a larger selection of voices than the echo chamber that is MW. You'll notice that a lot of the people who contributed are not MW members, and if they are, they rarely post. There was even had one guy who had never seen any Macross, ever. Who knows, maube the reason they don't post is the overall air of negativity? I'll be the first to admit that's the reason I hardly go into the toy forums anymore, I don't know if anybody noticed , even though it used to be my most frequented one. I still remember very clearly ages ago, when you yourself had a negative reaction to Destroy All Podcasts DX episode about Macross 7 and simply posted, "I didn't get it." When prompted, you elaborated, "I just didn't get why the love fest". You'll notice those guys aren't really around in the forums any more. But they are out there, still enjoying anime. The only problems I have with the sample is that there are no women, the age range does not seem diverse enough, and there are no Japanese voices. But of course, there's obviously reasons for that. I think this has been a great experiment in exploring just how virtual spaces work. The trick is to always remain aware that there are walls around these spaces, and the general social consciousness differs outside of them. Thank you! As for the villain, I don't think the "var syndrome" is the villain, rather, I see it as simply a tool that the real villains are using.
  9. It was pretty forgettable, in my opinion. In fact, the only thing I remember from it is that cop-out ending, because they didn't have time to wrap it up. Anyway, it shows just how difficult it is to adapt something based on a long-running serial, be it manga or anime, into a 2-hour movie. That is why you would have to take MAJOR liberties with a story to make it work within the confines of the new format.
  10. The best Tsutaya that I know is in Daikanyama, between Ebisu and Shibuya. It is called Tsutaya Shoten and it is super classy, has a ton of books and music, even a lounge with sofas and a wine bar. They often do author talk and autograph signing events (I first met Yuji Nunokawa there, the head of Studio Pierrot), so I would guess you should be able to find it there.
  11. The term "Real Robot" is very problematic... I understand why it is necessary, since it helps to keep a distance from the heroic "Super Robot" lineage of Mazinger et al, but that doesn't make it completely realistic. Kawamori himself, in his book, has called the very notion of "Real Robots" being somehow realistic, "nonsense" (direct quote). Case in point. L-Gaim was on TV last night and the entire episode was about female pro-wrestling.
  12. Doing something new is lazy? Sounds to me like the laziest thing they could have done is an SDF Macross rehash. Which is what at least the first half of Frontier seemed to be to me, and part of the reason why I was never too big into it. That is certainly not what is happening this time, though, and I for one find it intriguing, at least. It's not really my thing completely, but I do want Macross to keep on doing new stuff, not old stuff. Milking transformations? More than two Valks with FAST packs? Modified VF-25? What are you talking about? It's a modified YF-30, if anything, and even then, heavily so. Studio Nue is not the one doing the CG modelling, it's Satelight. Nue has nothing to do with this.
  13. While a draft does exist, as I mentioned on the latest podcast, according to Kawamori it completely ignored everything in the treatment and instead was straight up DYRL Americano. That's OK. I only know about the term because I remember from years back there was an episode of Seinfeld where Kramer goes to LA to work in the movie business and tries to shop a treatment that he wrote around to different producers and actors, including Fred Savage. (It later ends up becoming evidence in a murder case and he is arrested)
  14. The basic gist of that tweet: It feels cheap, the transformation and articulation sucks, materials and structure are crap, bits fall off all the time, and overall it's just stressful (like, to da MAX, yo). Ah, well. It's just one guy's opinion...
  15. Haha, what?? Have I ever even posted in this thread?? The only thing that looks good to me about this release is the box design, man... Thanks, but include me OUT of this mess...
  16. Wow, that's a real bizarre coincidence, because that is playing on my TV right now as I read this thread!!
  17. Hey, dude, I love your avatar! (Yeah, that's it! I really have nothing to say about this valk. ) And Macross the First, don't forget.

Actually, I think it's around the same size as the Yamato Koenig, if I remember correctly.
  19. Whoa, nice. And it's freeware, too. I'll check it out when I get some time to go back to my BD-drive PC in my office (I don't have one at home anymore, just a PS3 ) Thank you (and Lavinrac, too!) for the heads-up!

  21. The 1980s VHS/Betamax had mono. The Stereo mix was from the 1992 "Perfect Edition". The 5.1 mix was made for the 2012 BD. The mono version was missing from the 2012 BD. This new one appears to include all three. I say appears, because it gives you the option of one of "1984 Theatrical Mono/1992 Perfect Edition PCM-Stereo/ 2016 5.1 DTS"... I have only been listening to the commentary so I cannot comment on what changes, if any, have been made to justify the "2016" re-labelling.
