I definitely have some scratch building to attempt myself. @nightmareB4macross I get more of my paint delivered tomorrow, so one step closer to being completed. Your 1/55 "Ultra custom" also looks like it's nearing completion. Will you be going with a Roy or Hikaru color scheme? Going for TV VF-1S Hikaru. I laid down some more color to see the parts (and defects) better. The intakes are the original size, but painting them this way makes them look huge!

Big s Posted September 12 Posted September 12 3 hours ago, Papa Rat said: Almost finished with this little bugger. Besides the absolutely awful disintegrating old decals this Arii 1/100 scale VF-1S looks alright. I think that added parts like the simple sprue scraps drilled out for verniers and that reddish purple undertone came through in an interesting way. I still need to do some tiny paint details but I am ready to move along. The red gives a more painting looking highlight. Reminds me more of some of the box art kinda look

tekering Posted September 12 Posted September 12 Geez, you guys seem to have more free time than I do! Remarkable progress, especially from @Papa Rat. I'm glad to see the Alien "Space Jockey" got some well-deserved attention in between all your vintage Valkyrie kits. 20 hours ago, Mog said: It’s actually @tekering’s diorama. Oh man, Mos Eisley is kicking my ass, guys. 🤕 I went ahead and printed the rest of the Dowager Queen derelict, more-or-less as it appeared in 1977: It's almost as big as the whole cantina! 😲 As you can see, it still needs a ton of work before it's ready for paint, weathering... and a whole lot of sand, of course. 😅 I also need several of those iconic moisture vaporators... ...and even though Hasbro gave us one back in 2007, it was typically inaccurate (and pathetically small). 🙄 No matter. I can just print my own to scale, using this free online model I found. 😋 Looks perfect, right? Well, you get what you pay for. 😣 Seriously, in my 16 months of 3D-printing, I've never encountered such a poorly-designed model. The damn thing's got no substance whatsoever. Some parts aren't even attached, just floating in virtual space... and to make matters worse, the rash of heavy rains this week have caused me additional problems. Let's zoom in and do a forensic examination of this disaster: At the top, you can see where supports should have printed, had there been less humidity and more consistent temperatures. That's materials failure. I had to substantially increase the exposure time for each layer. Here, you can see a bizarre gap in the support structure, caused by a persistent glitch in the proprietary slicing program. That's software failure. I had to switch to a less-efficient file format to avoid further issues like this. Finally, this section is where supports collapsed, lacking a surface to adhere to. That's a structural failure in the model itself. I had to spend hours reinforcing the interior structure, and many more hours placing hundreds and hundreds of supports manually to ensure a successful print. 😒 Well, after days of manual restructuring, technical adjustments, and a heavy dose of trial-and-error, I finally got one assembled. I went pretty heavy on the weathering, as the Mos Eisley vaporators look poorly-maintained. I might've gone too far. 🤨
tekering Posted September 12 Posted September 12 Resin powder, to be exact. Actual sand looks more like gravel at this scale. 😉

I’m loving the print and it’s a very relaxing project to experiment with transparent layers, pushing and pulling shadows etc… Yeah I’m stuck in vintage model land. I might have a problem. Thanks for sharing the journey you have been on. The end results so far are great! Any updates to share on the USS Cygnus?

I definitely have some scratch building to attempt myself. I used Evergreen styrene. It can be found easily in model shops. The tube’s outer diameter didn’t match the size I needed, so I wrapped and glued a 0.4 mm thick styrene strip around it in a spiral to build up the diameter, using thick Tamiya Cement.
pengbuzz Posted September 12 Posted September 12 UPDATE: Still waiting for my arm to heal; the skin is mostly closed, but the veins and the tendons in my wrist were damaged. My PCP is sending me to a couple of specialists to check the extent of the damage.

Papa Rat Posted September 13 Posted September 13 (edited) All done. Had another junky stand laying around from Amazon that worked great for this little build. Bummed on those old messed up decals but not surprised at how chunky they went down. Work with what you got. Hahaha Next up is Volks 1:144 scale KOG. Super excited for this one. 🤩 Edited September 13 by Papa Rat Spelling
505thAirborne Posted September 13 Posted September 13 Hey all, while I have a post in the WANTED section, just asking here too, does anyone have a spare sheet of decals you're willing to part with for a 1/48 Legioss Zeta model kit/Jupiter Base? I no longer have my red MPC Beta or the stickers for my Dark Tread project. Thank you.

I'll have to look; I had the "Leader-1" Gobots version of the kit and the decals were for the Legioss, but I don't know how many of the decals are left on the sheet.

I have a few leftover MPC Beta stickers: Definitely missing the big Jupiter Base sticker and a good chunk of other stickers. But there may be enough, depending on what you’re planning to do. Unfortunately, I’m pretty certain I used the majority of the JB stickers that came with the red Toynami Alpha. Just PM me if you’re interested. If you need some large black JB stickers for the Beta wings, I might be able to print some up. Just would need to confirm the dimensions, as I sized them for the Sentinel Tread’s wings. And they’ll be a little more “shiny” than the Toynami stickers:

Okay, I found what I have left: some of the smaller warning ones were used on another kit, but the majority are here:
505thAirborne Posted September 14 Posted September 14 @Mog & @pengbuzz Thank you so much you two, if you're willing to part with the stickers & those decals, go ahead and PM me, let me know what I owe you and my address. I can definitely make both work for my project.

Papa Rat Posted September 15 Posted September 15 Volks 1:144 KOG D Mirage test fit is moving fast. Just need to get the arms/shoulders, and bow trimmed/built. There are few seams that I will actually need to fix which is amazing and speeds things up considerably. I’m not concerned about all of the hidden seams/details on the frame that the armor will cover up in final assembly. The fit is great! The IMS line has come a long ways. The smaller scale packs in detail and is perfect for my limited space. The scale feels a little larger than their others in the line but not too bad. Here’s a pic of the KOG No.7 in the line with Batsh which was No.1 in the line.

The small detail painting is sparse but will take some steady hands.
505thAirborne Posted September 16 Posted September 16 (edited) A huge thank you to @pengbuzz & @Mog for helping out with the Jupiter Base decals & stickers. Also, a big thank you to @tekering for the color suggestions. I have one more can of Navy Blue on the way, so I can finish this Dark Tread project. So far everything is moving along nicely. I might be attempting a scratch built front chest plate vs. just flipping down the canopy section. Edited September 16 by 505thAirborne
505thAirborne Posted September 16 Posted September 16 I think I'm going to paint this armor plates the Dark blue vs. gray, something a little different.
Thom Posted September 16 Posted September 16 My F-8 Crusader is back on the table after a long hiatus. Some Quickboost air scoops added.

Happy to help; I've had folks here help me plenty of times, so it's nice to be able assist someone else for a change! On that note: decals have been dispatched and are en route to you (as mentioned in my PM to you).
MechTech Posted September 17 Posted September 17 @nightmareB4macross It's coming along and looking good! @tekering That is a LARGE diorama! Sorry the 3D pritning came out rough, but it was a GREAT save! @Papa Rat The VF-1S came out great! Are you going to put a metallic finish like mica powders on your Mirage? @pengbuzz I'm sorry to hear about your arm and am praying that damage heals quickly! @505thAirborne I like your color choice. Thankfully Tamiya rattle cans are good. @Thom Those scoops look cool! Did the kit not have something like them on it. The Dougram will not be ready for our show in October. But since the Z'Gok is less involved, I'm giving it a shot. Gotta have that Zeon mono eye action. Got this idea from a guy on Youtube. It's a simple mechanism. Gearmotor, spur gear with ONLY 4 teeth, and two pinion gears driven by them in opposite directions as they come around. Next a pink lit eye will be made for it instead of the plastic placeholder. Thanks for checking in! - MT
