I believe all of the Hikaru VF-1J and CF VF-1A versions had the fins and tips painted red. The older ones are all white for the most part, but checking the vermilion platoon versions and those have red back there. intro for the show only has white, but in a couple scenes it shows red and others I’ve seen are white by the fins. It’s very inconsistent in the scenes I was just checking Quote
Papa Rat Posted Thursday at 03:45 AM Posted Thursday at 03:45 AM This Hasegawa set has the white. It’s sort of all over the place. 🤔 Quote
Chronocidal Posted Thursday at 03:51 AM Posted Thursday at 03:51 AM (edited) For Hasegawa to focus on the mainly white versions makes sense, when they got around to making the weapons sets they were mostly focused on DYRL designs, which tended to adhere slightly more closely to realistic weapons markings. Not that the black and red markings on the missiles was unrealistic, it just wasn't the type of marking you'd see on a production air-to-air weapon. I'd still like someone to actually detail the seeker tips with a sensor of some type, rather than just giving up and going "I dunno, make 'em blunt." Edited Thursday at 03:59 AM by Chronocidal Quote

I can’t remember which have made an attempt, but I do remember one with a little hole in the front. Maybe one of the recent kits, but I think it was one of the toys. As far as kits, you could basically take either a small drill or maybe a needle point file and make a small hole. Then some red or clear red for the sensor Quote

pengbuzz Posted Thursday at 08:24 AM Posted Thursday at 08:24 AM (edited) UPDATE: What you've all been waiting for: First, how to rescue 31 year old decals: Soak them in very hot water for 30 minutes, then carefully slide them onto new decal paper (used backing) and swish around with plenty of water to get rid of all the old, yellowed glue (as seen in the first pic!). And now, the pictures: With flash: Without flash: More pics: Wing positions: Helmsman had too much blood wine: Stay tuned... Edited Thursday at 08:28 AM by pengbuzz Quote

Or another adhesive to make the decals stick? Great Build. Quote
Papa Rat Posted Thursday at 09:47 PM Posted Thursday at 09:47 PM Going to experiment with some complimentary underpainting on this little Valkyrie. So I’m thinking blue under the orange and a purple under the tan. Might look like 💩in the end but why not. Quote
MechTech Posted Friday at 12:28 AM Posted Friday at 12:28 AM @pengbuzz THANK YOU for the tip on the glue. I always thought it was the film that yellowed!? GREAT looking weathering and paint. I don't imagine they're the type of people to take their bird to the car wash!😁 - MT Quote

I thought the same thing, then I decided to test one of the "decals" that was just the copyright info for the set (Ertl seemed to be big on that back in the day). It turns out it's the glue for it! On that note: in a pinch, if there isn't much glue left on a used decal sheet, just use a little watered-down Elmer's Glue. And keep in mind: PLENTY OF HOT WATER when trying to get the decals to release and to move around. Also: mind where you have your Micro-Sol bottle. I just lost half a bottle when I accidentally knocked mien over, and that's all I had left in the bottle. I'll have to replace it in 3 months; everything is so expensive now, even white bread is a commodity. O.o Quote

I first put them on a used decal sheet to pick up the glue from that. Then, I used Micro-Sol to make them conform (repeated applications, then a hair dryer on low for a few minutes). You can use Elmer's Glue if needbe (watered down a bit). And yeah: it's just the glue turning yellow from UV. Once removed (and new glue applied), they seem to work fine. On really old one, you might want to use Micro-Clear liquid decal film to reduce the risk of shattering. Edited Friday at 04:00 AM by pengbuzz Quote

The old models are the “Oh Cool” part Althogh, if you got a fun group of friends, some drinks, some snacks and have fun with bad films, then it might end up worth it then again, make it a double feature and watch Psycho Goreman right after it for some real fun. derex3592 Posted yesterday at 04:06 PM Posted yesterday at 04:06 PM I uncovered and uncluttered the paint bench this morning! Cleaned up and 99% ready to paint with my new NO NAME compressor! Just need an adapter for the hose I just don't happen to have 🤨 The kit stash under the bench is only temporary, until wife and I get the back room closets emptied out of boxes from the renovations. Stay tuned! ACTUAL modeling shall resume......... soooon..... ish... 🙄 😂 Quote

Chas Posted yesterday at 04:51 PM Posted yesterday at 04:51 PM (edited) That's a great tip for old decals @pengbuzz and a nice job on that Bird of Prey. @derex3592 that new space is looking better and better, but I suspect it will feel best when it's all cluttered with parts trees and pieces from your first build! Anyway, updates on the mods to the Hase SDF-1. Just about done the build phase for the mods. Had to make some compromises with the details, but overall I'm happy with the progress. Pics. It took me a bit, but I finally got it to work! Now I just have to find/ print ones for the 22 inch (1/537) cutaway TOS E that I'm working on. The ones that came with it are the wrong font and the wrong size; since this was a find 2nd hand, I cannot get replacement ones without paying a chunk for them. ANd that's also not counting a replacement dome for the split one they included for the one war engine that's cut in half (trying to build a whole one). 5 hours ago, Chas said: Anyway, updates on the mods to the Hase SDF-1. Between both modes, the details flex and fluctuate quite a bit (ran into this when I was rebuilding my 1/3000 Matchbox SDF-1). Quote
Thom Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago Looks like a prime painting station, @derex3592. Have to agree that the 1/100 VF-1 is looking very sharp, @Papa Rat. Those mods were well worth it, @Chas. Quote
Papa Rat Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago (edited) Thanks so much. I’ll post a finished pic tomorrow. @Chas @derex3592 @Big s @Thom Next up I will be rocking out some IMAI Orguss kits. Papa Rat Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago (edited) Well that’s a wrap. My first aircraft build is complete and I want to do more. It was a blast! Sun came out so I got a few photos. There are some things I messed up on which is a given for me, leading to plenty of learning moments In this simple kit. It was fun painting over a darker/colorful underpainting. That might have been my favorite part. I also added a few minor details here and there and I’m so happy with how it turned out. Edited 5 hours ago by Papa Rat Quote
