It's great to be able to enjoy them, and then pass on the enjoyment. I'm going to need to do a similar reduction in the future, once I get my hobby room organized and setup some cabinets to display things. My original plan ten years ago (a whole decade wow) was to avoid duplicate paintschemes, but not necessarily duplicate characters, as long as they were unique (ie, a Max TV VF-1J and VF-1A were fine, but I didn't go for both his DYRL 1A and 1S.. I've since filled that gap with a kitbash of another 1A and a Roy). That went up in smoke as sales abounded, and then Bandai threw another wrench in the works with supply and quality issues. I've gotten to where I buy two of every release as a rule, to make sure I at least get one good valk out of the pair. It's begun to hit critical mass now though, and I need to start thinning the duplicates that I never needed in the first place, and don't have room to display. Fortunately, I've got a younger brother who appreciates valks as well, so I may pass him a few as gifts in the coming years.

Being on this site and trying not to spend money are generally mutually exclusive activities.

They've had some supply issues with Calibre in the past actually, I had to cancel and re-order my VF-142 F-14 from another vendor because they just never got that one in stock for whatever reason. I don't know if that was just a uniquely in-demand product, but it stuck in my mind as being annoying that I had to specifically email them to request a refund when they cancelled the order, rather than it happening automatically. Seemed very clunky for a modern webshop.

I'd just like to mention that your new profile pic gave me a good snorting laugh. Thank you. But yes, bring on the VT-1!
-
I really really hope so, since this is the one I've been wanting a second of since I got the original. Getting a premium version would make it just that much sweeter. Now I just need duty uniformed Hikaru and Misa to put in the cockpit. You listening Arcadia? The HMR beat you to it, but that doesn't mean you can't catch up!
-
If you're not averse to modifying the wings instead of the pylon, just cutting out the pylon stubs and mounting the magnets in the wings would probably be the best option. Then you could replace the mounting plates on the pylons with bits of metal, and they'd probably mount incredibly solidly. If you could get small enough diameter magnets, you might not even have to modify the wings at all, just insert them into the center of the mounts.
-
They're talking about the fact that all the Arcadia PF releases come in a plain black box with plain white text, and no graphics to speak of, as opposed to something that actually tries to show off the product, or has an opening cover flap.
-
There's really nothing to "try" there, you'll have to heavily modify the pylons to work. They're shaped like actual ordnance mounts, with large flat plates that would bolt under the wings, and they're meant to be glued in place. On the other hand, if you made some custom pylons, it shouldn't be hard to mount the Hasegawa missiles on them. Shapeways is nice for making fully formed shapes, but you could almost just cut pylons out of some thick styrene sheet, and stick the missiles on them. What I do love about the Hasegawa set is that they treat the weapons mounts like actual pylons, which is something that Bandai generally doesn't even attempt. The pylons are modular, and you can tell the dual RMS mounts are built out of the same pylon used for a single mount, but with a dual adapter bolted underneath. Technically speaking though... the RMS mounts don't make sense, and wouldn't have mounting lugs in more than one location. For the markings to remain oriented sideways, they'd need a dual mount that attaches on top, which is what most VF-1 weapons sets seem to use. They would probably mount on something either with a flat side-by-side mount like these. Strictly speaking, anything used in space would probably be primarily rail-launched, but I think the RMS missiles in more recent material are shown ejecting a short distance, and then thrusting forward. I forget if that was ever shown in DYRL, but I'm pretty sure that's how Frontier treated them. For clearance purposes, the top-mounted RMS pylons make more sense for them to eject downward, rather than sideways. I'll be interested to see how the sizes and positions of the Bandai missiles compare with the Yamato ones. The concept art/renders seemed to use slightly wider spacing, which should help avoid the triple clusters looking quite so crowded with the wings partially swept.
-
Those ones are by someone else, but Xigfrid has similar missiles in his shapeways shop. Personally, I've got my 31A loaded with all the longer dual-packs of sparrow/amraam looking missiles from the YF-19 set. They look beautiful on it. The belly pod though looks like one of the ones that came with the Yamato/Arcadia VF-0s.

Yeah, it was one of the surprise last minute releases before Yamato shut down, amid 30th releases of the other most popular designs. I was hoping we'd get a VT-1 as well, but it didn't happen. I was thrilled it happened, because I'd never gotten around to getting one the first time it was out, and was able to fill that particular hole in my collection.
-
After collecting so many of the Yamato/Arcadia ones, I'd really prefer Bandai just stick to the TV versions, but we know that won't happen. What I really need to do is thin out my duplicates of older valks, and make room for what's likely to come.

Your most recent Macross or toy purchase! General thread.

I wonder how many people got accidental doubles from AmiAmi that day? -
I might pick up one of these and sell my old Yamato one, but I've also toyed with the idea of outfitting one with an EW combat load: no dish, with missile packs on the boosters and arms, and ECM pods under the wings. Mostly I just love having the booster markings printed. Honestly, if Arcadia would issue a PF vesion of just the fast packs, I'd buy a dozen of them.

Most of the characters were barely characters, but that hasn't seemed to have much impact on which ones sell well. Bandai does need to adjust the color settings on their eyes though. The only colors they seem to be able to hit correctly are blues, blacks, and whites.

STAR WARS Merchandise Episode - 2
Chronocidal replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
To be entirely fair to Resistance, I'd buy toys and models of the ships we see in there any day of the week over any of the other crap getting shoveled out for the new movies. I love me some in-universe kitbashing. Come to think of it.. Bandai/Hasbro/Revell could probably really make a killing if they capitalized on the "Uglies" as a thing. Release an Armored Core style kit/toy series of ships that have interchangeable parts... bits of X-Wings, Y-Wings, A-Wings, B-Wings, Z-95s, Ties, and whatever else, and then let you mix and match the parts to build custom ships. You listening out there marketers? I'm giving you a freebie here. -
Solid fins would actually be a really simple part to make, and I'd love a pair. Just might be tricky matching the paint and body color.
-
People usually paint the starboard marker lights blue because they generally look blue when not illuminated. That varies by aircraft type though, because certain aircraft will use clear lenses with blue-green bulbs inside, rather than white/yellow filaments inside blue lenses.

STAR WARS Merchandise Episode - 2
Chronocidal replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I don't have any actual numbers to back this up, but I'm under the distinct impression that the only SW merchandise that consistently sells worth a damn is OT stuff (and maybe the odd new design rehashing an OT one). Sadly, I think this is partly due to a pile of completely fugly designs coming out of the main franchise, and leaving toy makers with the impression that new SW stuff doesn't sell well, while the good designs from the offshoots languish on drawing boards. Edit: I hadn't actually watched the video before posting this, and it seems they do have the numbers to back it up. Bottom line here I think? They need to make something good enough that people actually want to buy it. Whether that's the movies themselves, the merchandise, or both (I'm voting both), I don't know, but the current situation really sucks. I know they have a history of oversaturating the market with crap no one really wants to buy, but now you're oversaturating the market with things that people actively dislike because of the source material, not just because they're boring products. -
.... why in the hell would you ever remove something that fundamental? How does targeting even work then? What do they expect you to do, point with a mouse and click on them?

You have no idea how happy it makes me to see that Bandai actually made this thing reasonably possible to disassemble. Guess there's a first time for everything. Also yeah, those pilots look a great deal better, Xigfrid. The really obnoxiously bad part about the Bandai pilot isn't really the size itself, it's just the horrible mismatch between the pilot's microscopic hands and the monumental wad of plastic they molded in for the stick.. I'm tempted to cut it out and replace it, because it's just incredibly fugly. I'm wishing they'd gone with the DYRL cockpit in general, and wondering how hard it would be to replace the instrument panel and seats with a Hasegawa set. Could even paint it, for good measure, since Bandai couldn't be arsed to bother with that.

You won't regret that Advance, it's a beautiful bird. I think my only recommendations for it would be to take the transformation slowly, since it's a quantum leap in complexity compared with the VF-1, and to act quickly if you want to acquire any sort of official under-wing weaponry for it, since sources for those are few and far between. If you want everything and the kitchen sink for add-ons, it might be worth tracking down the Macross Plus YF-19 version as well, since it comes with a boatload of extra missiles and weaponry to add. It's very much up to you and your interests though, because digging into the various lines of Macross merchandise can get complicated and expensive very quickly. I don't expect Bandai to overwhelm the 1/60 market with 1/48 releases, but I do expect them to release at least a few. It would take a significant effort to produce a line as extensive as Yamato/Arcadia though, since the current 1/60 VF-1 mold has been in near-constant production for over a decade now.

I wasn't even planning on getting the whole group, but my inner completionist got to me (x2 even). If only the series was as good as the toys that came from it.

Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII
Chronocidal replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
So, something to keep in mind when you talk about fitting modern avionics into old airframes. Modern stuff is ridiculously processor intensive. Not in the sense of how much hardware you need to fit, but in terms of how much heat all of that stuff generates, and how different digital systems are compared with older hardware. Old tube-powered hardware would run just fine at high temperatures, but without some extensive reworking of the airframe to evacuate all of that heat build-up, those systems are going to melt themselves. Another thing to keep in mind is the rapid response angle. Stories about the F-20 usually mention how it could be started, up and running, and in the air within something like 5 minutes. That was back when everything was just purpose-built hardware. By comparison today, a lot of hardware is generalized, and individual functionality is software defined. It's more flexible, but you pay for that flexibility in response time, and the more computerized you get, the longer and less predictable your startup sequence becomes. The comparison to Windows 10 is apt. The more software-intensive your systems become, the more complex the boot-up procedure becomes, the longer it will take, and the more likely you are to have minor failures that require a reboot. -
Robotech and REMIX by Titan Comics
Chronocidal replied to Old_Nash's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
On the other hand, at least giving everyone identical bodies keeps the characters consistent from frame to frame. This comic looks like they keep rotating through an endless supply of stunt doubles, and forgetting to edit them out in post production. Seriously, some of the more recent covers are really not bad at all. They just can't seem to consistently make anything inside the comic look anything like them.- 1934 replies
