Fortunately, tampo can be removed. I'm planning on some rather extensive modifications to at least one of my YF-19s, including the wings, tails, ventral fins, neck, and thinning the black patch on the spine so it's not so huge.

They might not benefit from the inflated prices, but they absolutely screw with supply to keep demand high, and ensure their runs sell out.

Yeah, the CIG/Crytek mess sounded like a 30 technicality pileup. From what I understand, Crytek wasn't holding up their end of the deal by doing the work to move the engine to a 64-bit architecture. Anyhow, yeah, those videos are an amazing example of how versatile the engine they're making is, and why it's taking so long. It's got all the functionality of something like the battlefield games, letting you move vehicles and things around at will, but at the fidelity of something approaching a flight or vehicle simulator. There's just so much capability being baked into it. From what I recall, it might even be entirely possible to simulate the physical properties of mechs, and while I never expect the atmospheric mechanics to reach DCS World levels, they are separate from spaceflight. If we get enough people pouring effort into this, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be able to have a full SDF-1 simulation built in this engine.

I guess I never had mine displayed long enough. I did a lot of work tightening them up, but they've always been pretty floppy.

I'm no legal expert, but the entire thing sounded like Crytek throwing a hissy fit over Star Citizen deciding not to use Cryengine. It partly revolved around wording in the contract that granted SC "exclusive" rights to use Cryengine. Where it goes off the rails is that Crytek seems to have thought "exclusive" means "you must use Cryengine for SC." Any normal person would have interpreted that as Crytek only giving SC rights to use the engine, but there was no binding contract that SC had to run on it. When Crytek stopped actively supporting development of the engine, SC moved on to Amazon Lumberyard. There were other bits in there about how SC was turning into two separate games, due to Squadron 42 being released separately, but this was called out in the original contract, and Crytek knew about it. Anyhow. As far as seeing Wing Commander 1 and 2 built in this engine? The main reason I'm driven to SC in the first place is because Chris Roberts has remained dedicated to the idea that SC will be run more like the games of days gone by. Yes, there will be "official" servers for the game, but they've advertised it from the start as allowing private servers for people to develop their own content. There are so many styles of play available in the game, it's almost inevitable that people will want customized sets of rules for specialized play. Frankly speaking, the universe and mechanics are already nearly identical to classic WC. It's part of why I enjoy the game so much already, even in its unfinished state. Once the full game is released, and we start seeing SDKs become available? I'm fully expecting to see conversion mods for every science fiction universe under the sun. If we don't see a fully adapted Wing Commander universe mod in the next few years, I'll eat my hard drive.

I'm so torn on this, because, like the VF-0, it's not something that's changing visually in a significant manner. It's not like going between the VF-1 version 1 and 2, where you can easily identify the benefits of the new one. The joints might be better, and the transformation might work more smoothly, but those are of little benefit to a model that stays on display 90% of the time. I dunno. If they make a new paint scheme (splinter? pretty please?) I'll probably pick it up, but otherwise I'll probably just grab one. I know I'm never getting them at the prices I got the originals, either.

If the item isn't damaged, you may want to just offer to resell it on the forums here. There were a few people who missed out and might be happy to pick one up, and it will probably save you money on shipping.

As someone who's basically bought a game license and a single ship I liked (the Gladius, most WC-ish ship in the game I think), I'd say I've gotten my money's worth out of it. While the game proper isn't ready for prime time, I actually really enjoy the testing phase, and messing around with people in multiplayer to try things. Some of the most fun I've had was running a private PVP match, and loading up one of the preview builds of the giant Reclaimer salvage ship... then proceeding to play bumper cars with it. Goofiness aside though, I feel like it's been worth it just for the hours I've spent playing the pirate gauntlet arena missions. The spaceflight mechanics and physics in the game are some of the best I've seen in a very long time, and the combat is really enjoyable. Even just the fact that I can take off from a space station, fly out to a moon, land at a botanical research station, and wander around the surface in one seamless experience is probably the most impressive thing for me. It's something I've wanted to be able to do in every space game for literally decades.

Yeah, if you don't mind waiting over 6 months to get only half of your original order. I picked a lousy freaking time to finally cave and request the reduction. They made the shipping label just in time for the package to be stuck in limbo while they deal with all the delays imposed by that typhoon.

I actually think it might have been intended, but they didn't make the bump on the insides of the boosters big enough to matter. If you look inside the booster, it's got a little nodule in just about the right spot to settle into the inner hardpoint. I did notice that the boosters don't fit quite as easily into the slots on the YF-19 as they do on the Advance version though. It's almost like the wing gloves got slightly thicker. They'll still fit, but it takes more pressure to get the tabs in place.
-
I might dig out one of my Advance models later to compare (and maybe perform a foot swap if I can find an easy screw to remove), but did they maybe shift the points around to give more space outboard of the VF-25-style booster packs? I'm thinking the Advance hardpoints were only spaced so far apart as to accommodate the few existing missiles they'd made available with the VF-171 super packs. Far as hardpoints go though, I think I need to do some serious pylon design work myself. Not that Bandai would ever care enough to notice, but several of those weapons mounts impinge on the control surfaces, because they're not far enough below the wing, and not far enough forward. I'm thinking I might try and adapt some standard Hornet rail mounts from my spare parts stash to see how they look.

"Right away" is relative. I actually requested this, and they said they would ship it out immediately. All I've gotten so far is an update that the shipping label was created a week ago, with no updates past that. They also stated they'd credit my account for the second one, but I haven't seen anything about that either.

Could use little risers to give them different standing heights, but that would also depend on how much space you have between shelves. I only ever have a few valks out at any given time on display, but if I was going to put in display cases, I think I'd have everything standing vertically in fighter mode. Opening the feet slightly, and balancing them that way always felt like a nice way to display them (except for certain exceptions like the YF-21/VF-22 and Sv-51, which have oddball feet that don't work for it very well).

Made my first simple mod to my first YF-19 tonight. I started to try this on the Advance way back when, but couldn't get the plastic to pop apart before it felt stressed. This one popped open much easier. I just pushed a flathead screwdriver between the layers of the shield, and twisted until the glue at the rear popped, and let that long tracked piece slip out. I can always put it back if I want, but I always thought it was the weirdest thing to have to carry around two neck covers if I wanted to go into gerwalk mode, because the one mounted to the shield is useless for it. Bandai actually passed up a golden opportunity here, because with a slight tweak, they could have made the neck cover attached to the shield detachable for use in gerwalk, and still allowed it to store behind the shield for battroid. As it is, the neck cover on the shield does detach pretty easily, but the tabs that mount it to the sliding track mount aren't big enough to hold it in.

Your most recent Macross or toy purchase! General thread.
Chronocidal replied to Gakken85's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Something to consider is that a few of these can be a bit of an investment. I've gone way past the "I have too many valks" stage at this point, as my recent move made me painfully aware of exactly how many boxes I had to move. I have one entire room that's like a badly played game of Tetris, and it's nearly filled wall-to-wall (but not floor-to-ceiling) with a combination of model kits, Lego sets, and Macross items. I can't help much with the money aspects or willpower, but there are certain things you can do to mitigate the storage issues. If you're truly worried about space, and never intend to sell any of them, you can easily store a few VF-1s in a shoebox. They're much more compact than the packaging would have you believe. If you really want to keep the packaging, you can minimize that a bit too if you stack similar plastic trays together in a single box, and then collapse the other boxes flat. Granted, that doesn't help much with display space, but it can help reduce the impact to the rest of your living space. -
Ugh.. I dunno. I guess in the light of how stupid almost every character in TLJ seemed to be, it makes sense that all of that slipped by them. Maybe that's what bothers me so much about the storyline in general.. it feels like everything is happening because somewhere along the way, someone was utterly, incomprehensibly stupid, and sat there and watched in amazement as a giant axe flew in slow motion toward their own face.

That's the part that I can't process though. Recapture most of the galaxy with what army? Yes, it's a populous place... and we've seen nothing to indicate the First Order is any bigger than just enough to populate the single planet where they built Starkiller Base. At least ESB had that establishing shot of the fleet to show that yeah, they've got a lot of ships, and a ton of people. The Empire was big. But we've seen nothing to indicate the First Order even owns more ships than we've seen on the screen at a single time (and Holdo's calamari torpedo wiped out half of those). How big are they supposed to even be, and if they're huge enough to actually accomplish that, what the heck was the rest of the galaxy doing while they built up to that size? Did the First Order just vacate to unknown space, and start doing nothing but making babies for 30 years straight? Really though.. if the galaxy is so huge and full of people, do they just flat out not care that the heads of state and capitol of the entire republic was just photoshopped out of existence? It's not like it wasn't visible from literally everywhere in the galaxy at the same time.

If I remember what was mentioned at one point, the New Republic decided to shuffle the capital every so often, or something like that. Your second point is one of my biggest issues with the entire trilogy. It's like the rest of the freakin galaxy doesn't even exist.

I'd blame the redesigned packaging, in part, at least as far as the broken head lasers go. Far as this release goes.. I opened my AmiAmi copy, and have been fiddling with it a while tonight. I still want to bash Bandai's engineers over the head with a crowbar for how stupidly convoluted their designs are. My hip joints wouldn't move at all to start off, so I disassembled both hips entirely to loosen them up. There have got to be at least 8 individual pieces all sandwiched together in that stupid joint, and there's actually no room to loosen the screws sufficiently, because the hip won't close. I might have to resort to sanding/filing down the ball of the joint. Apart from ugly tampo, fugly heel blocks, and pants-on-head engineering, I've had no issues so far at least. The idea of filing down the heel blocks actually sounds rather appealing at this point, since it looks like it's all just a solid block of plastic.
-
They won't be included because Bandai wants you to shell out for their exclusive add-ons later on. Also, Bandai's landing gear always have, and probably always will suck. The shapes have gotten slightly better, but they still can't be arsed to paint them white, despite, you know, an entire internet's worth of evidence that they should be. It's like they just enjoy clinging to certain inaccuracies like they're some kind of trademark.
-
Elvis Draken yes please! Far as the 22 goes though, they nixed that entire plot thread from the movie (for the better, I think), so I think they really would be better off just doing the 21. And then a VF-11 with the giant booster rockets. And a Ghost.

I can't even necessarily say he's a good ideas man, just one with too many of them to organize in any coherent manner. The sheer volume is enough to blind you to the fact that they don't really amount to anything. Spray enough buckshot around, and even a blind man might eventually hit an intended target once in a while. TLJ is what happens when someone else tries to follow through on JJ's epileptic logic trees. It'll be interesting to see how JJ picks up where he left off, and whether he actually finishes anything of what he started, or just goes off in million new other unfulfilled directions.

I don't remember any premium YF-19 teaser, but I'd be sorely tempted. I admit though, after seeing all the tampo Bandai splattered their version with, I like having the clean Arcadia as an alternative. It probably could use the intake warnings, but it otherwise looks very accurate to the animation.
