  1. I don't remember any premium YF-19 teaser, but I'd be sorely tempted. I admit though, after seeing all the tampo Bandai splattered their version with, I like having the clean Arcadia as an alternative. It probably could use the intake warnings, but it otherwise looks very accurate to the animation.
  2. The Yamato 1/48 had that too, actually. It was a shorter curved antenna that slid into the backpack. It even had a waist swivel, but it was much more limited in range. The swingbar was hinged at the base to pivot back and forth with the nosecone. Frankly speaking, what Bandai have developed is basically a v.2 1/48 VF-1. All the same features as the original, in a newly refined design.
  3. The 19 is the only valk I have almost as many of as I do VF-1s. After this newest release, I might actually have 19 of them. I really do hope the 21 gets some love soon, it's long overdue.
  4. So, some small update about my 31A order. I sent a third request for information about the delay, and offered to reduce my order to a single 31A if it's becoming too difficult to send me the pair I ordered. I got a fairly quick response, with an almost immediate "in preparation" update for the order, followed by a message that they would credit me for the second 31A. I'm pretty okay with that, since I'll be able to put those credits forward the eventual super/armor packs. Much as I wanted two of them, I'll probably never take this one out of fighter mode anyway. So the weird part is that after a week, I haven't seen any change to the original order quantity, or the refund credit. I guess I'll have to wait for the box to arrive before I find out if I got both my 31As.
  5. Wasn't the Enterprise in the Kelvin-verse launched significantly later though? I don't know the exact timing, but I feel like I remember Kirk and crew all basically getting posted to the Enterprise fresh out of the academy on its initial launch. Or had Pike already been in command for a while, and they were joining an established crew?
  6. Course that never stopped anyone from making that non-existent version. Can't really blame them, it's a good looking combo! I've only got a single 1/48 Hikaru 1J with super packs, and I think it's always been my favorite design. I admit though, I'm not sure I'm a fan of the sliding/flipping shoulder design. Might be more screen-accurate, but if that joint ever loses tension, the shoulders might become useless in gerwalk mode, because they'll just flop around. The old Yamato pivoting design has had its share of problems, but it works in gravity's favor. I'm hoping they limit this release to the TV variants, just so I can pick up the main six I mentioned earlier (Trio of 1Js, Roy, CF, and VF-1D), and call it a day.
  7. Have to admit, I'd love to see kits of the assorted ships they've got running around there. They look like the classic EU "ugly" type, mis-matched kitbashes of existing ship components. Also liking the designs a lot better than anything that's come out of the new trilogy. I'm cautiously optimistic, this looks like it has the potential to be pretty good at filling in the backstory to TFA.
  8. Actually, the packaging for the Advance was entirely different. It used the standard cardboard-covered styrofoam tray that Bandai had been using since the Frontier valks came out. This one's got the new style packaging used on the Delta valks, with a molded plastic cover over the foam, instead of using small blocks of foam to hold the valk in place under the cardboard sheet. I'm fairly sure that the plastic cover is going to be less forgiving than the cardboard covers, if the head laser pokes it. I just got my first copy delivered from AmiAmi, but I'm holding off opening it until later this weekend.. going to be the first new valk I open up after settling into a new house. Edit: Second copy just arrived from CD Japan about an hour after the first. Will be sure to inspect them thoroughly as soon as I get settled!
  9. For those of you with broken laser tips, keep in mind, if the part is in the box, it's a very easy repair. Since the break seems like it tends to happen along the engraved detail line, you don't even need to sand/repaint anything. You'll just need a very fine drill bit, and a matching piece of metal pin that you can attach the pieces with (I tend to use small segments of a paper clip for that sort of thing). Drill into both halves of the laser, and depending on how rough the pin is, you may not even have to glue it. I also would not sand the joining edge unless absolutely necessary, since that will reduce the width of the line around the break, and may actually make the parts fit together worse.
  10. The really annoying part is that the studio models are not even consistent with how big the ships are portrayed in the movies, and all the popular technical specs given by the EU don't even reference either of those sources! Sadly, Bandai's fallen prey to that issue in a big way as well, because despite their non-sensicality, they're adhering to the old published sizes for the ships. That's why we now have 1/72 X-Wings and Y-Wings, 1/48 A-Wings, and 1/100 B-Wings all labeled as 1/72. The only reason the X and Y-wings are consistent is because they have the externally visible R2 units to scale them by. And, unlike the A and B-wings, they existed as life-sized props for filming. ROTJ only used matte paintings of the other two. You can absolutely reverse engineer the scales of the filming models based on the components used to build them, but even that gives some wacky scaling for the A-wing, because they used a severely oversized pilot figure for that model. Otherwise though, beautiful work all around! I've got a nice little fleet of Bandai kits ready to begin now, so I hope to start painting and detailing them soon.
  11. Actually, that's a great idea. I don't think the toes come off as easily, sadly, but it would make a nice matched set so you don't have to worry about color-matching the existing toes.
  12. Doesn't have to be a plastic issue if the engineers don't have their heads screwed on straight (which was another issue the 171 had). I never took a good look at the internals of the VF-19 Advance leg.. the fact that the entire leg is held on by the forward lip of the intake is making me think it was designed to fail catastrophically. Looks like we have another release that needs out-of-the-box maintenance to alleviate Bandai's pants-on-head engineering. As far as the ugly feet go, can anyone confirm that the heel blocks are attached in the same way as the Advance? I'm not going to swap the feet, but if the actual heel block just attaches with a single screw, it should be easy to make a part to replace them with something more streamlined.
  13. Actually, now that I think about it, now might be a good time to see if you can't find a way to request parts from Bandai, via someone from Japan. I know we have members there, and with the YF-19 just being released, it's probably the most likely time for them to have spare parts in their inventory. Bandai does not have a good history with those kinds of requests though, and they tend to refuse replacing anything but the entire figure. Certain 3D printed materials might be strong enough to replace that, but printing something with that precision and detail might not be easily done.
  14. The problem with Bandai valks is basically figuring out how to disassemble the darn things. You're not going to get replacement parts from Bandai, unless you live in Japan, and it'll take time for someone to make and test-fit a replacement with 3D-printing, if it's even possible. First thing I'd do is clean up the junk left from the first repair attempt, because you're not going to be able to repair in that shape, even if you did have factory replacements.
  15. This is true for just about 99% of all macross aircraft, but that particular hip always did scare me. I don't know why it's so hard for people to keep designing simple workable hip joints..
  16. I forget if I said this about Star Trek or Star Wars, but the movies' issues really have nothing to do with the SJW angle. I think it's a bait-and-switch criticism topic that's being overblown across the board. So what happened? We got a movie that was badly written, that just happened to have a fairly diverse cast. Correlation does not equal causation, but no one gives two flips about logic. Consequently, the people criticizing the movie for absolutely legitimate reasons are being completely drowned out by the people blasting the critics for being racist, because there's no possible way they could have reasonable criticisms of any other aspect of the film. Loudmouthing on the one side starts a shouting match from the minority on the critical side that may actually be sick of hearing about diversity, and it just gets louder and louder, until any semblance of legitimate criticism dissolves into a SJW hissy conniption fit that no one can hear themselves think over. Diversity has nothing to do with why the movie was bad, but since it's the hot topic of this generation, every valid criticism gets drowned in the pissing match. I mean, why should anyone accept that the movie had problems, if you can easily dismiss everything as the critics being racist?
  17. I'm actually thinking this might be a failed endeavor, only because most of the people I know can still play PS1 games on either a PS2 or PS3.
  18. Ok, that box is gorgeous. A part of me does wish they could be collapsed down more easily like the Yamato/Arcadia ones, but I'm not sure which packing material is actually better. The fact that Bandai always wraps their valks makes me think the styrofoam can be reactive with the paint or plastic.
  19. When and if we ever get another YF-21 release, I'm going to need a bunch of them to balance out my collection.. Between this release, the Advance, Arcadia, and Yamato, I'm going to have 9 of these birds sitting around. Counting all my other VF-19 molds, I'll be up to 21 of them.
  20. I though I'd heard that that Boba Fett was never properly released at all? Guess a few pre-production samples may have gotten out. Speaking of Star Wars, I've been catching up on a few of the Vintage collection vehicles.. will photograph them when I get them together, but I grabbed the Tie Interceptor, a Toys-R-Us Y-Wing, and the standard paint B-Wing. I actually was going to skip the Y-Wing, but had an amusing mix-up on Amazon, and the seller sent me the Y-Wing instead of the B-Wing. When I mentioned I was thinking of picking up both anyway, he gave me a nice bulk discount. Now I just need to pick up pilots for them, and find one of the new standard Tie Fighters.
  21. That's a pretty low bar to set, considering 4, 5, and Zero had something like 50 each, and 6 had 15.
  22. See.. this is where I'm always curious how the PC release will go. HAWX absolutely belly-flopped into the market, and forgot to actually incorporate the DLC into the PC release, so when people online began to realize they could just tweak a text file to unlock all the paid add-ons, Ubisoft threw a conniption fit, banned anyone who spoke of the issue, and the PC release got quietly shuffled under a rug. I might still pre-order the PS4 version to get the content, but I'm going to be following the issue closely. If it looks like you can unlock everything by screwing with the game's files on the PC, I might skip the others. (incoming short rant) I'm sick to high heaven of this freakin DLC crap in every single release now. Putting a plane you featured in your cinematic release trailer as a DLC exclusive is the dickiest of dick moves, and I'm tempted to just say screw the franchise until I can unlock everything on the PC manually, without paying extra. Not that the F-104 is actually extra to start, but you can bet they'll add it to an online shop later for people who buy the game later. (end rant)
  23. I'm just making assumptions, but it seems like they tend to do that on designs someone else has already done, as a way to differentiate them. Obviously there are some mixed results. It feels like mostly the changes come down to different ways to interpret the same design, based on emphasizing one or another feature. Bandai took a very different approach to the YF-19 design than everyone before it, changing some shapes and proportions in ways that make the design unique, and sometimes offer better features (like the waist swivel), but also can negatively affect the overall appearance (all that freakin tampo).
  24. That's part of it, but Bandai badly mis-proportioned the entire foot. The toe is far too chunky, and the actual foot is far too high on the ankle in fighter mode. The heels on the Advance only work because they're so skinny. If you drop the exhaust down to the centerline of the leg where it's supposed to be, and make the toes not so overly thick, the whole thing would line up great.
  25. True to battroid animation maybe, but stick out on fighter mode like the 19's developed a crippling case of gout.
