Upgrading a classic: yet another custom Bandai/Matchbox 1/3000 SDF-1
pengbuzz replied to tekering's topic in The Workshop!
Basically, I agree with Thom and nighrmareB4macross: As they said: if you mist a light coat of white over that and then pick out various panels and do them in differing shades of white/ grey, it would remove the circuit board effect. I had a similar result on mine when I did the tiny panels in paint and had to do that. Don't get discouraged, tekkering: it's just a small speed-bump on the road to the Macross you always wanted. Been there, done that, ate the t-shirt. -
Man, that sucks! Is there anything you can do to fix them?
-
Will do! BTW: do I get the 50 bucks?

Been squeezing my brain trying to figure out what "I.H.P." means! O.o Closest I can figure, the initials represent three people who comprised this company (my guess), represented by the three characters in IHP's "VF-1 Riders" logo on their instruction sheet: Scoured the entire 'net and not much more than a translation via Yandex of one of the instruction sheets. *so much for my career as a private detective peng! :😞*

rofl!!

I wish.

Guess what I'm working on right now folks? Hint:

Now we just need one for 1/60 VF-1 replicas so they can be priced at $9.95 (plus shipping and handling)...

Happy b-day derek! Your ship is looking ship-shape (pun intended! ), and I can see why you're eager to build that shuttle!

I recommend Devcon plastic Welder (actually, a 2 part epoxy like adhesive). I found it sealed the cracks and bonded securely to the blue plastic on mine, reinforcing it from within. It will also bond plastic to metal as well, and has a tensile strength of 3500 PSI, plus cures in 4 minutes and can bear weight within an hour., -
Or you could just use peroxide on them (and sunlight)...

I had previously considered doing something with the chest on my version; I had to abandon those plans when I had blue plastic parts breaking just from handling them! The blue plastic on these does not age well at all, and cannot handle much (if any) stress. I literally had to install a solid metal bolt through the shoulders and the booms, and fix them permanently into place via a hole I drilled into the metal frame in order to remove stress from the blue plastic chest boxes. The white plastic, on the other hand, is a much better quality plastic and readily accepts modifications and handling. I found altering that to be far easier and much less risk of breakage, Tekering: this is by no means intended to be a "ding" against your SDF-1! I like the clean look and details you've put into your work! I'm just concerned overall about the long-term on all of these that each of us own. Wondering if maybe someone in the future needs to start planning replacement parts for the blue portions! O.o -
And on that note:

Nah... I just carved new ones. Seriously though: nice job! Looks very smooth and like one solid piece! -
Same; this didn't have to happen, but it did.

Look at it this way: whatever the ship's sensors are pointing at, the photorp launcher doesn't have to compensate for while targeting, and has the added benefit of the entire saucer frame to absorb any recoil!

I wonder if Big West may consider a run of posters now that they and HG finally buried the hatchet? I think that would help with promoting the franchise in North America.

WOW!!! Looking very sharp there, Tekkering! -
Thanks MT; yeah, it gets frustrating on both levels. But at least my hands are recovering and should be good to go in a couple of more days (I'm giving it a few more days just to be safe)! Thom, are you going to be putting a photorp launcher anywhere on the model? Also: nice job on the reinforcement post in the saucer!! I did something similar in my 1/650 TOS E!!

Sounds good; looking forward to it!!

Really loving this! One question though: The UN Space Roundel ("kite"): do you think a think black outline on both the white kite and red circle would be appropriate? Just a suggestion.

We're losing people left and right! O.o Nice vid by the way, Thom!
