  1. Not this time - I would not go as far as to include real world stars in a Macross fan fic! But I should probably get a nice picture of a mind flayer for the avatar.
  2. On topic or not, the amounf of knowledge in several heads here (including Gubaba and antibiotictab) is quite striking. (What is the name of the lady on YT? Yes, now that I see her it does seem clear).
  3. VF25-F, where is "near you" - and is there any way to see her full schedule without reading Japanese? I'd like to know if any UK dates are planned (or Ireland but that is not realistic). It's definitely easier for me to hit London than Paris.
  4. I thought it was a part of being "like" the character Anyway - now that I think of it there does seem to be an external resemblance, certainly no less than between Ranka and Megumi Nakajima. So if Megumi was used as the model for Ranka (at least in some scenes), could they have used Mari as the model for Minmay earlier?
  5. On this topic, there does seem to be a resemblance between Minmay and Mari Iijima - though from what I could gather it was the other way around, with the actress picked because she was so like the character?
  6. I'm close enough to France so I looked. She is listed among the guests, and so is Kawamori. But I could not find them in the festival schedule. And it's only a month away. Wonder what's going on.
  7. "И вам того же." As for my 8 year old son, he is done watching SDFM and appears cool enough with "no sequel allowed yet".
  8. "which Minmei is Burira searching for?" Excuse me - I did not recognie this reference and even Google does not help. What character is Burira - in what series? Thanks! EDIT: found the answer in a subsequent reqply and now I know to dig more on Richard Birla.
  9. I do mean the TV show - in DYRL the Earth appears to be completely bombed out. (And that makes sense because in DYRL the Zentradi had a lot of time to complete the bombing). So - any idea how many people survived on Earth in the TV series? there are cities after the bombing...
  10. Googled for it - looks quite good. But as they did a working guitar, I just imagined they'd do a working Valk too
  11. When I read this, my first thought was "when are they releasing a functional Valkyrie?"
  12. There are some people in the West who can do DTM too. Here is a thread on the VocaloidOtaku.net forum with a list of "overseas producers". http://www.vocaloidotaku.net/index.php?/topic/20291-overseas-producers/ For some reason it does not list one of my favourites, MsConstantine-P (and she got the -P on Nico from someone in Japan apparently) http://www.youtube.com/user/MsConstantine91 (see "Vocaloid original" list) Unfortunately she does not seem to have GUMI yet.
  13. antibiotictab: wow! great. (And you probably recognized my nickname). Opening a Tezuka thread http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=39372 . And an "on topic" question: between this museum action and the extremely well placed Tezuka references in Sayonara no Tsubasa, is there some sort of official partnership between the makers of Macross and Tezuka Productions? When the Hyotan Tsugi appeared I went "wow". But when very shortly afterwards Ranka started talking about bugs (not just Vajra) and everything living having souls and feelings, it was an entire new level of Tezuka reference.
  14. Looks like there was no thread on Osamu Tezuka (except a 2006 request specifically about Phoenix). Now there is one Since I learned about him at all (in 1997 I think) I was fascinated by one person effectively creating a genre. And even beore that there was that 1993 screening of Phoenix 2772 on Russian TV that got me hooked and longing for years... until I got the Best Video (or something) dubbed VHS with the help of the then-budding Moscow anime fan club. Perhaps the reason I don't care much for Ranka vs. Sheryl is because, with apologies to these fair ladies, my one and only anime love is fixed from back then, Olga the robot. Well at least I got to give her some decent tribute, with the Japanese embassy organizing a screening in Moscow in summer 98 but forgetting to bring in an interpreter. I started translating to a lady I was with, cries of "Louder" ensued... I was soon brought into the booth ended up translating the movie from Japanese - without knowing a word of Japanese. I just knew the thing by heart from watching it so many times! After the screening I got a small Moscow Times interview - and found enough "followers" to do a full fandub (over the English - we had no Japanese source). Yes, I'm sorry, it was an act of piracy - but we made a point of getting no monetary compensation when passing it on. The dub was spotted from Israel to Vladivostok. (A fansub was made later when a Japanese DVD became available). I voiced Dr. Saruta in the dub, hence the nickname I use on anime-related forums. I wonder if Kawamori himself is a Tezuka fan... or perhaps I should not even wonder. He was an anime/manga fan back in the late 70s. He could not have missed it.
  15. To Takarazuka - just the revue, or also the Tezuka museum? (I mean, are fellow Tezuka fans lurking here? There certainy are Tezuka references in Sayonara no Tsubasa?)
  16. Moving from SCOOPUDA re GUMI - Ranka's voice Vocaloid - and English. V3 is, as it seems to me, apparently better at English - the V2 English ones (Sonika etc, as well as the bilingual Luka) were somewhat unnatural while some V3 songs (Oliver etc) are good. And English Vocaloid use is rising. Also, the Japanese Vocaloids have acquired a foreign following who want, speicfically, these voices. The big hit could be an English Miku but she is repeatedly delayed, probably because they can't make her sound any good. While GUMI *is* good. And in case of GUMI there are, probably, also the Macross Frontier fans who want GUMI because of Ranka. (I wonder why Internet Co did not make a May'n Vocaloid too). P.S. Regarding the terrible music. Vocaloid "producers" (anyone can be one by acquiring a Vocaloid) make all sorts of music. A very wide range exists. Then the concert organizers select the stuff to play. If the concert music seems horrible to you,. that means your taste is radically different from that of the organizers.
  17. Realized what "not a discussion thread" means, moved response to existing Vocaloid thread: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=37372&p=1051568
  18. You might already know it, but there is some happiness to be had in your computer instead - you can have Ranka sing your songs, in English. The product is GUMI Megpoid English, with the Vocaloid 3 engine and recently released. This Vocaloid is based on Megumi Nakajima's voice (they had her in for hours of special recording sessions). The character design is "inspired by" Ranka (read: a blatant ripoff; I'm not even sure how they settled character copyright issues). You do need to know a bit about music to handle Vocaloid well. You might also want to search for Gumi songs beforehand to ensure this is close enoiugh to Ranka for you. (Warning: many of these songs are not very well made, the English version is a new product and a "golden" set of well known examples is not there yet. Her more established Japanese version is known as one of the best Vocaloid singing voices - outdoing the famous Mku Hatsune when it comes to musical quality). Purchase available here: http://en.vocaloidstore.com/index.php?gOo=goods_details.dwt&goodsid=6346&productname= GUMI was a part of what got me interested in the Macross franchise.
  19. Thanks! A completely different question again (yeah..,) - what IS the size of the Macross, and does it differ between SDFM and DYRL? It if is really just 1 km long, how can it house 50000 people in a low rise city? Or are people housed in blocks, with a low rise center built just for services like shops and restaurants? Besides, it has loads of cars (not really a necessity on 1km in the absence of rain) and worse, the DYRL version even has a straight motorway-like road with heavy traffic? Is there any reason for that? (At first I thought it was uniusable in a city but if the city is strung along one main road it starts to make sense - what does not make sense is why they spent 3 days looking for Hikaru and Minmay but thatcan be written down to dramatic effect)
  20. I don't think SDFM goes too graphic (MF actually goes out of its way to say "it's graphic this time" in the first episode). Yes, the Earth gets destroyed, but the carnage happens offscreen - family walks, explosion, family ducks, camera moves away. Even in the bunker around Misa there are no corpses (unrealistic as she is the only survivor at a military base). The most realistic harm to the human body I can remember there are the bullet holes on Roy's back, but they are neat and clean and only shown briefly. There are also Zentradi skeletons in a couple of cases. I think he'll be ok with all that. The last eisode has some double entendres about "making culture" by Kamjin and Laplamiz but, again, they never go into detail. Though I suspect he might start to want to drop SDFM (whatever version) in the last few eps (33-35). The long-winded melodrama was hard enough for me to sit through. And he won't even understand what it is all about. Well, if he complains, I'll just let him skip those and go straight to ep 36. And there he will ask me how they all survived such a crash and why Misa looks completely unharmed and I'll have a red face and will have to tell him "because it's a cartoon"
  21. My problem with Robotech is Reba West. He is growing up in a musical household and an obviously bad singer pushed as a star would give the wrong message (or at least cast her as a semi-villain). I'd much rather have the shower scene, it's innocent enough.
