  1. Seeing as the Forum has people very knowledgeable in a variety of all things Macross-related, perhaps someone is acquainted with the present views of Mari Iijima? Macross was her big break. But how does she see it at present? Does she still value being associated with Minmay, or did the worse side of the anime fandom put her off? I read somewhere of an incident when people on an anime convention refused to listen to her non-Macross songs. Some of her later work (of what I listened to, notably "Survivor") seems to fit a "Minmay later in life" narrative surprisingly well, though probably not intentionally. And when I watched her recent live footage I could not help thinking that Minmay at 40+ would look and sing exactly like that (presuming the SDF-2 survives and Minmay does live to that age). There is also a rather strange parallel of "what happens to an idol after her Big Break ends" (Minmay leaving on the SDF-2, Mari Iijima going to America). But I wonder if this kind of analysis is actually disrespectful to Mari Iijima. As I understand, the initial likeness of the real and animated singer was intentional in proven canon (at least they used a lot of her own songs). But the question is whether she still enjoys it - or repudiates it - or anything in between.
  2. Thanks. A. LOT. This is a golden source for background material, which is very much needed for fan fiction
  3. Aha, thanks - but at that time the fleet was firing a quantum cannon volley at the Vajra. The Vajra folded out just in time (taking Alto with them, according to Kawamori), so the volley has hit the planet? That means the planet now (I mean, as of the movie's end) has a significant region burnt out? Also - was Island 1 landed on the planet at the time? In the fast-paced movie progression I seem to have missed that landing. But the explosion is seen as "somewhere far on the same level" - so they were landed? Also there are holes in the dome, but the singer ladies, none of whom is a cyborg nor are they in a shelter, don't sem to have trouble breathing. So when has it landed? Or was it really NOT landed at the time? I'm not sure exactly how Aya Endo spanked you, but I get the point about having both a great singer and a great actor (even though May'n is a good actor too). That just shows how cool Megumi Nakajima is because they did NOT need a double for her?
  4. Retrying a question that went to the past pages: how could Alto breathe and speak when standing on the Vajra Queen, given that it was not inside Island 1,s atmosphere? Alternatively, if it was inside there, why did that blast not destroy Island 1? (Or if he only spoke in his mind, how did Ranka and Sheryl hear him?) And new question: why was a separate speaking voice actor needed for Sheryl? May'n appears to be quite good at acting in her live performances?
  5. sketchley: I would think that the "future idol" idea was more about visuals than music. And as far as I know, that future is not now yet. When a singer starts doing yuri shows with her own holographic avatar in Japan, please do tell me as I want to watch that video! Megumi Nakajima, of all people, would be able to do it very easily, because her own Vocaloid already exists, complete with loads of 3D models. As an aside, I'm a newbie on the Forum and it's realy cool to encounter someone actually in Japan - I'm about as far from Japan as physically possoble while remainin on Earth, namely in Ireland. I do wonder if you have seen any of the cast live (the answer is probably yes, judging by the general hardcore feeling I get here!)
  6. Well, Kajiura's more recent work includes Sword Art Online and Madoka, and her variety does increase significantly - in a way I do like, absorbing influences that are relevant. However I did find out that variety between *different* works of Yoko Kanno is just huge (not what I expected from hearing her in Frontier). Kajiura also seems to be toying with the idol idea with her Kalafina project, but it's probably a deconstruction of sorts? The expected picture-perfect looks and variety of costumes, coupled with the kind of music not usually sighted in those quarters? Or am I missing something here? And thanks for all the explanations - now it all makes sense, between "Macross generation themes" and "Kawamori's personal liking for idols" (this was the part I missed - I knew of his work on AKB0048 but I just assumed it was a money-making exercise like the entire AKB48 megaproject, I was not aware he was an ascended fan!) I still would love to hear what Yuki would come up with if given a valkyrie theme. She probably won't ever be called into the Macross universe, but Macross does not have a monopoly (though a valkyrie reference in any anime is likely to be seen as a Macross shout-out). Yes, I did get a bit disappointed with the title song of Sayonara no Tsubasa where the theme of mythological, not robotic, valkyries appears thrown in at the last moment and does not get any musical reference (it does get animated reference). But then again, inworld, the song is written on a prison wall by an ill young singer who probably heard Wagner's piece exactly once in music school, heard the teacher explaining the background in all of five minutes, and that was all she ever knew about the subject?
  7. Hello, I have watched SDFM and some of MF including movies. (Zero and Plus - hopefully very soon; not M7 though, too long.) What surprises me is the relative lack of music variety. Now, in SDFM this actually makes sense in-universe. Cute pop is exactly what is needed to keep the suddenly-uprooted people from going totally mad; Minmay was at the right place in the right time to blossom as a star, and one presumes the more various musicians are somewhere in the background, most of them getting slaughtered in Episode 27. But what about MF? Why does the universe revolve around two singers doing slightly different varieties of generic pop, complete with its obligatory restrictions? Don't get me wrong - this is not criticism of Sheryl and Ranka, or of May'n and Megumi Nakajima, they do what they do really well. At first I blamed Yoko Kanno but some research showed that she basically does what the creators tell her, and (like the singers) does it well. So the general style was likely selected by Kawamori. If it was Yuki Kajiura I suspect she would tell Kawamori that if you do a song with a Valkyrie chorus you get musical Valkyrie references in; she would then try to sound vaguely Wagnerian, perhaps. But it was not Yuki for a reason, Kawamori wants what HE wants, not the sort of disctinct composer "mark" that Yuki leaves wherever she is invited. And for his purposes Yoko Kanno is best. (NOTE: this is not intended as a Kanno vs Kajiura battle, they just create *different* things). My question is why he wants it. Cashing in on the oldtime fans, who are used to the Minmay "naive pop" style (and perhaps hated M7 for its absence)? Agreed, that settles Ranka, but why not have Sheryl more deep/operatic or something? (I don't mean "academic", I had someone like Tarja Turunen in mind). Of course "tastes differ" and all - I just feel the world of Macross Frontier, in general, seems to suffer from a lack of musical variety?.. Wait - a "fridge brilliance" idea I just got when getting ready to send this post. The idea is that Ranka and, to a degree, Sheryl can share emotions with a race that is very alien to humanity. Might be logical to assume that only simple (and strong) emotions, not subtle shades, can be shared across such an enormously deep divide. And the music that corresponds to simple strong emotions is, in fact, pop (except the aggressive emotions, but no one really wants to make Vajra even more aggressive, thus a Metal Fairy might not suit Grace's intentions). So the situation is STILL making sense inworld, as it was in SDFM? As in, there are various musicians, but Sheryl and Ranka's styles match their purpose, to the point that Sheryl might actually have been manipulated to pick her style?
  8. Thanks! And where can I find your translation of My Fair Minmay?
  9. Thanks! Your answers clear up many things, and I hope the series will clear up some more - but some stuff which is uniquee to the movie still baffles me. Notably the Battle Frontier part. As far as I could gather from the final battle (which I have now watched several times), the Battle Frontier was disconnected from the Vajra Queen (at least the cables are clearly shown disconnecting). This happens at the same time as Brera getting out of control of the Galaxy conspiracy, so perhaps he did a suicide atack on the Battle Frontier leading to the disconnection? But what next? Or were the cables actualy disconnected by the Queen herself, in which case the Battle Frontier (and Mishima and Glass and the rest of that team) were probably destroyed by a massive Vajra attack in the next instant? (In the Queen's place I'd certainly be angry at these guys and "crush them" sounds about right). And also - apparently the SMS and NUNS fired a quantum volley at the Vajra but the Vajra folded out just in time? But that means the Vajra were not inside Island 1 and its atmosphere, as said Island 1 was not vapourized by that volley. In this case, how could Alto stand there with no helmet on and even speak? (And he must have spoken not just in his mind because Ranka and apparently Sheryl heard him?) Yes, the Vajra can do a protective membrane with some air inside (like they did for Ranka when trying to carry her off) but no membrane is shown this time.
  10. Question: is there a clear summary of events in the Frontier movies somewhere? They are very fast-paced and hard to follow (especially the second movie). I have not watched the series yet or it probaby would be easier... except that the second movie appears to diverge wildly from (what I know about) the series anyway. For example, what happened to the Frontier part where Mishima and Glass were? What was the one-off reference to Bodolzaa Mobile Fortress about? Was Alto simply pulled into the fold when the Vajra pulled away or was it something else? Is Michel dead at all in this version? Who controlled the network that was actually controling Grace in tis version? Etc etc. Much of this is probably in the movie if one looks very carefully. So before asking any such questions individually I'd need to find a movie summary. I am probably far from the first to his this problem so I expect something to be written up already - hopefully not only in Japanese!
