  1. Thanks for the tips! So at least I have the M-II path. I don't have a problem with bikinis as long as they stay on and the wearer does not engage in outright foreplay (think Universal Bunny). And there is even a decent (or at least official) dub of that. Good enough for now, actually. M7 might wait until he can handle subs, and F.... much longer than that. Unfortunately. Hopes and dreams.
  2. After reading all this, I still don't understand how Hikaru's "first mount as leader" could be placed on board the Frontier when it was lost to Britai. Unless Britai somehow returned the wreck later and it was rebuilt to a "non-working monument" standard. The VF was not totally destroyed (hard to do that with a club) and I can imagine Britai returning it sometime after the big battle. But I can't understand why the wreck would be preserved and not dumped to space. Or do they just routinely preserve their own wrecks to cannibalize them for parts, so they applied normal procedure?
  3. Seeing as his mother (aka my wife) is a professional musician, and he's studying the violin himself, Robotech probably should not have been considered. There are, in my view, upsides to that story, but there are none to that singing. Apparently the only remaining question is how safe is M7. SDFM is safe enough, MF is firmly out. I can't really watch all of M7 so have to rely on Forum wisdom. (Besides, with M7 he'd have to do with bad pirate voiceovers until he can read subs). Ah wait - there is that other option of M-II, which by its target audience and time of making should be safe? Alternate continuity and all.
  4. I would like to request advice from the ise membership of this forum. I have a son, who has recently turned 8. As I was imbibing subitled SDFM, he noticed. But I don't think he can read fast enough to watch subtitled stuff. I found a dubioius Russian voiceover of DYRL (we're a bilingual family here, Russian and English). We watched that together, ahd he liked it very much, but had way more questions than answers. I could not help him because my reaction to the movie was the same. (Well I did find some answers by googling and asking here, yet...) I am thinking of getting voiceover SDFM for him (or the ADV 2006 dub, which is probably better than any fan/pirate voiceover despite the age discrepancy with Minmay, which undfortunately does get heard sometimes). But, what after the 36 episodes? I would not feel comfortable giving Frontier to an 8 year old. It has way too many adult themes, not to mention Sheryl "Hopes and Dreams" Nome (in the movies she becomes, for this purpose, Sheryl "Universal Bunny" Nome). What *can* I give him if he asks for more Macross, seeing as I do have it? Is M7 more child-safe than Frontier? Or should I just tell him "get these and you get more when you turn 13"? Or go the easy way and give him Robotech instead? But, Reba West. I don't want him getting the idea that THIS is the kind of culture that can impress aliens. (Yes, Minmay is pop, but she's good pop).
  5. Thanks! I googled and perhaps I found the interview you are referring to. http://www.robotech.com/news/viewarticle.php?id=15 = kurtkr Was it your intention for the Minmei character to be so annoying or did it just turn out that way? Carl Macek says: It was always my belief that Minmei's immediate popularity onboard the SDF-1 was a bitter pill to swallow. Therefore, if her "talent" was marginal - but her "spirit" was high - it could show that even misguided personalities like "Minmei" could have a positive effect on people and dramatic situations. Melodrama is made up by extremes - and Robotech was played as melodrama - remember these characters are archetypes. == Yes, "misguided" does sound over the top about Minmay - especially as it apparently refers to her singing, not her relationship with Hikaru, where the original story (especially DYRL) makes her misguided indeed. These words sound like a retcon of Reba West's limitations into the character of Minmay. I was initially surprised to find out that Minmay haters existed. Then I realized that it might have nothing to do with Misa and everything to do wth the type being something many of us have encountered. (In Frontier one could get to hate Sheryl on the same basis). So this question was really about the "Minmay fans who hate Minmei" as opposed to plain Minmay haters. But the interview reference clears things up enogh gor me not to need to wach all 36 Robotech versions (my list is long enough without that) ADDED: also - is it known what happened to Ware, Rori, and Conda? I was told they were killed in the last episode, but now I realized that the Robotech fan told me this, and this episode diverges betwen Macross and Robotech.
  6. Wel, thanks for the clarification on these ones also... Not sure I agree with that definition of "what I need to know" but that horse is apparently dead, buried, and decomposed. (And the movie retconned as an inworld movie). Now yet a different question (sorry for bombarding this thread but it's better than bombarding with new topics). I have seen, on various net places, Macross fans bashing Robotech's Minmei - apparently Robotech has changed her character to the worse. But the only differences I could find information about were (a) that Reba West is not even remotely up to Mari Iijima's singing standard (heartily agreed) and (b) that the Sentinels sequel plans had Minmei behaving in a much less mature way than the Macross path of FB2012 and assorted hints. Is that all? Or were there Minmay character changes (outside of how she sings) in the Robotech dub of the Macross animation itself?
  7. From the explanations I see here, it looks like all the stuff that could be REALLY interesting for me in DYRL is happening offscreen. Lynn Minmay explaining to Bodolzaa how culture works and teaching Britai about jokes? Offscreen. Max stuck in a Meltrandi ship with Milia and, presmably with her vouching for his skill, convincing Laplamiz to macronize him and give him a mecha? Offscreen. (Yes, the scene when he sees a Huge Beautiful Woman is awesome. But we only get a few seconds). Misa being "not the Misa I knew", and a city rising out of nowhere only to be destroyed after a song lyric is found - lots of screen time. I wonder - was the Minmay-Zentradi and Max-Meltrandi interaction - breaking the home planet, of not technically species, AND gender barriers at once - described in some supplementary material? Like novels or anything? I'd love to know more about THAT. Or did they leave it all for fans' wild imagination? Also - what happened to the Meltlandi fleet? Was it destroyed, or did Britai turn on Bodolzaa and then they left the Meltrandi alone?
  8. I'm new here and would be very interested to read it but nothing is visible in the original post now?
  9. I was reinterpreting your remark in light of the well known traits of a certain Major Roy Fokker, for whom "sucks" likely has a very different meaning, especially when spoken about such a beauty (not exactly projecting an air of purity, either) as Sheryl! That interpretation does make Ranka a dominatrix though.
  10. I just got through a rather imperfect copy of DYRL. I guess I'm about 25 years late to the party, so questions belong in this thread... even unhappy questions. Because I guess they have been asked as many times as there are ships in a Zentradi fleet. And also because some of my confusion may be due to a bad translation. What have they done to my favourite SDFM characters?! Am I alone in thinking this version of Misa is completely off the rails? The real (oops I mean SDFM) Misa took the idea that she ight be one of the two last people on Earth with grim resolve. The movie one on the other hand... There are other cases too where I just thought "this is not the Misa I know". Has Bodolzaa (yes he is a favourite character) really been turned into a traitor, reneging on his word on the whim of the moment? The peace appears to be with teh entire Bodolzaa fleet (or is it just the rather susect translation?) but then he just says fire on the Macross? I really like the Bodolzaa of SDFM, in a way one likes a cinematic pirate or gangster while definitely not wanting to meet one in real life. Bodolzaa there is a firm commander with clear aims, and is also excellent at interrogation. None of this character seems to remain in th movie - or did I lose something here? Why is the most interesting part, how Minmay actually convinced Bodolzaa to make peace, all offscreen? She got a heroic upgrade, compared to the series, in bringing peace single-handedly - and then they never show it? Just a couple of 2-3 minute sequences would not be to hard to animate - were they out of talented script writers?! Why can Misa understand what the Protoculture computer is saying? She later used, apparently, frequency analysis to translate the lyrics. Good enough (for the rather soft kind of Sci-Fi that Macross is). But she did not have anything at hand for frequency analysis when talking to the computer. What's happening with Max and Milia? I do like how they animated him admiring her beauty while she is in *macronized* form (while she admires Minmay's song... which she somehow hears despite her mecha being broken at the point?). I don't understand what happened to her after that. They were in an airlock of Macross? But if she was taken prisoner it's never shown? Or she somehow escaped - but then the Meltrandi got their backside kicked - did she even survive in this version? (If she didn't, poor Max). And finally - did anyone (Mari Iijima or otherwise) ever sing and record the English lyrics for the DYRL song, as shown on screen?
  11. Thanks for the information, Tochiro! But, preferring someone is one thing, shipping her with Alto is another. Even if he is a Grace fan, I somehow doubt Alto/Grace is what he had in mind? (Is she a shotacon?!) Also I wonder - when he said it, was the context the TV series or movies? The Grace character is significantly different between these two? Also - Alto fans? Very interesting. Are they male or female? I never met one. For Western audiences, as far as I could understand, Alto is generally seen as rather bland. But perhaps there is some cultural difference involved? Or are they mecha fans who pick a pilot if they just have to pick a main character? I would really like to understand how this works. antibiotictab: than you very much fo rthe welcome and for the enlightenment on what goes on in 2ch. And it's really sad if the "movie ending is money based" version is true. I thought it was a rather desperate Ranka-fan version. I did not know Sheryl fans in Japan were like that. The preferring vs. shipping thing is also the part I don't understand about the, specifically, Ranka fandom. I mean, "girl grows up" is not exactly a new theme in art. And it often includes learning to leave an adolescent crush behind. If she does not get Alto, so what? She saved the world, gained her adulthood and the respect of the star who she looked up to at the start. Also, Ranka is arguably a new step in human evolution (that last one even Minmay could not boast). She has left behind being an adolescent, and notably helps her rival Sheryl survive - this stays, albeit in different ways, in both the series and the movie - showing a level of maturity quite beyond her age. What's not to love and why does one require Alto-hime in the mix? Why Sheryl fans would bash the girl who saved Sheryl's life is also way beyond my limited understanding. I have not actually seen this happen, but then I don't understand Japanese and therefore can not read 2ch. (I actually was mentioned a few times on the place, under this same nickname, as I played some role in pulling sane forces together during the "Save Miku" debacle). And sorry, but reading *Major Focker* say "Ranka rules, Sheryl sucks"... I do believe you about Sheryl, Major. But Ranka a dominatrix? Wow, that's new.
  12. I sometimes play Nethack. In original text mode. Ascended 3 times, I think. How's that for retro?
  13. Even the "wallet emptying" part is done in a certain style on this forum. "Macross figures" here mean mecha. As opposed to cute little Rankas. And yes, point taken - "shipping wars" here means FedEx vs EMS (and whatever you use to ship from Japan?) - as opposed to Alto/Sheryl vs Alto/Ranka (with a good deal of Sheryl/Ranka and "all three together", though these two options are apparently the peacemaking ones). For details about shipping wars generally: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ShipToShipCombat I have probably found out some of the secret, though. I don't know how the admins bribed Google, but while "Macross forum" brings MW up as the first link, "Macross Frontier forum" does not include it in the first three pages! So one has to be interested in the full franchise, not just Frontier, to locate the place. And the ship war fodder is concentrated in Frontier apparently. SDFM is way too clear about it, with half the main cast (or thereabout) shipping Hikaru/Misa before it even happens. (Well that's how it seems now - but TVTropes says that in times past Hikaru/Misa fans actually HATED Minmay, which is... well... didn't she take enough in canon already to leave her alone? Perhaps the old timers here can explain how on earth that stuff could happen) Oh, and terminology clarification for the happy (really) Benson who asked. "Shipping A/B" means, in modern fandom parlance, "believing that A and B should be in a romantic/sexual relationship", and then either supporting it with canon or deciding to ignore canon... or deciding what's canon and what's not (Frontier TV canon, Frontier Movies made as fan service for Sheryl fans who have more money and this is why Kawamori who really prefers Ranka gave them Alto choosing Sheryl - yes, this appears to be an existing view).
  14. Wait - the one spoiler I found in another place somehow had Sheryl and Ranka both in wedding dresses in a church so I thought it was actually Sheryl/Ranka there... but BreRanka was something that did NOT come into my mind (and still does not fit in there). The thread is rather old - I wonder if any decent synopsis exists now? I am definitely not importing this stuff.
  15. Thanks - to the point and very clear. On a completely different note - Macross Plus is next on my list, but which one? I googled for OVA vs. movie but could not work out a clear conclusion. If this matters for the choice, what I want to know is everything about Sharon Apple. (No offence to mecha fans - it's just that "robot/AI character development" is my very long term interest, triggered by Tezuka's Phoenix 2772 back in 1993 and by Asimov before that). So while it seems the OVAs have an epic dogfight that the movie omits, it is not a decider in my case.
  16. Hello from a native Russian speaker. "Karyobin" is likely to be intended as "Korovin", a common Russian surname that would basically translate as "Cowson". The first "ko"is unstressd and does sound more like "ka" in standard Russian pronouciation, so the katakana could be a workable rendering of the surname, although probably not academically correct. A google in Russian did not reveal any plane designer by that name. I could, however, find two test and military pilots. both war heroes, both apparently killed in test airplane crashes, and both named Nikolay Korovin (they died in 1940 and 1957). If Kawamori was at any point reading up on the history of Russian planes, he could have encountered one of the stories (likely the one who died in 1957, he was an important person in development of jet fighter planes). It is not much of a stretch to have a plane model named for a hero like that. And "Mikolev" is probably a mixing of two real life Soviet airplane design bureaus (would be "companies" in Western and modern parlance, but in 1982 they were state bureaus) - Mikoyan and Tupolev.
  17. Okay, okay, you got me now! *ducks* As I understood from the comments here, M7 does show a significant variety of music inworld... directly resulting in M7 being so long. MF gets to the point in a reasonable amount of time... but then it does not have the time (let alone budget) to do more than two disticnt styles within the general "idol/pop" designation. You probably can't have both. What does surprise me now is that *Kawamori* created Escaflowne, with its extremely different approach to music. I was not aware of that (while I was quite aware of Yoko Kanno doing the music for it). P.S. I'm not a kid and that's the problem, when I was one, popping 50 episodes in a day would ont be a problem, except I did not have 50 episodes to pop. But I did splice together a fandub of a 2 hour film in a 24 hour uninterrupted sitting (that was just the audio processing, the speaking itself was recorded in several sessions before that, and it was a full dub with 6 voices and effects to make characters different).
  18. Wait - there is a regeneration of the Island 1 dome clearly shown in the second Frontier movie - might have been based on the technology?
  19. That should have been "were" (Macek is dead) and refers to a rumour I heard from the Robotech fan friend - that Kawamori and Macek did meet and it was amicable. However I could not find any corroboration on the Internet. And some more newbie questions, mostly re original series: - Does Macross canon anywhere actually state that Global, Claudia and any others (except, obviously, Misa) have survived the crash of Kamjin's ship into the Macross? I have seen this stated in lists of Robotech and Macross differences but is it anywhere that could somehow be caled canon? - Is there any in-canon explanation why Misa is a First Lieutenant at the start if she was fresh out of trainng and one normally becomes Second Lieutenant on graduation? She was top of her class but would that alone be a basis for instant promotion? - At one point Zentradi had to send a recon ship to pick up TV waves from the Macross. But at a later point, following the return of the spies, Zentradi soldiers are shown to be watching that same TV station in their own quarters, using Zentradi standard equipment (the TV set was too large to have been stolen by the spies - unless they can macronize technology?). How could this be possible? I really can't explain this change except if the Macross intentionally started to emit the signal specifically in the direction of the Zentradi fleet, which could have been a reasonable decision given the report of the escaped prisoners, but is apparently not shown? - At what point was any kind of faster-than-light communication (as opposed to flight) developed in the Macross universe? This relates to the disappearance of SDF-2 "without a trace" - but how could there even *be* a trace if there was no way for it to send word back to Earth? One could surmise that some form of communication existed between Britai's fleet and Bodolzaa's base, and that after Britai became allied Earth scientists could reverse engineer the equipment - but does canon (or anything close) actually say whether is happened and when?
  20. Well to be very honest, I was initially drawn to the Macross franchise by none other than Vocaloid Gumi. Another newbie question. There are sometimes fandom wars between Macross and Robotech - and there is a nice summary of differences on this forum - but am I understanding correctly that the actual creators are on much better terms? Those flowers in Forbidden Elixir seem like a shout out to Robotech to me (and more importantly to afriend who i sa seasoned Robotech fan).
  21. As a new member and newbie in the Macross franchise (albeit very much not newbie in anime in general), I found no better place than this to express admiration for the high class of this Forum. I mean, members in Japan, people who actually know stuff replying about it... and to top it all - NO SHIPPING WARS (at least none I could find, and this time I did do a search). That last one is an impossibility anywhere else people talk about Frontier. And yes even after movies settled the issue. Elsewhere, one can also find good information sometimes (notably piecemeal retelling/translation of Frontier novels at http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=88876 ) - but it is always, including the linked page, interspersed with the dreaded shipping war that would probably embarass the characters to no end if they were real. The place rocks, way to go, thanks a lot! And sorry for the newbie questions (but everyone is a newbie sometimes).
  22. Not to worry, Gubaba. My stuff is actually in Russian (I'm originally from there) so it won't contaminate your information landscape Besides, I'm trying to do my research properly, so hopefully it won't suck AS much as the average piece of fan fiction.
  23. Thanks for the loads of info! And judging by "seen May'n" you're in Japan? Judging by responses from there in several threads, this Forum seems to have more spies in Japan than the Zentradi ever had on the Macross! Seeing as you know how the Megumi Nakajima story worked... in some blog I've seen a reference to "Megumi Nakajima = Ranka Lee" being a thing. I wonder if it ever was anything more than fanon. Sure, another mixed lineage newbie star with a somewhat similar figure could excite fan imaginations, but were there hints from "on high" or herself? In another thread I learned that Mari Iijima came to hate being seen as "Minmay" so I wonder what the story is with the new generation I'll get to the podcasts so. I'm generally not a fan of podcasts but with the amount of info here, these ones should be good.
  24. OK, I am not here for Kajiura wars (I do seem to value her somewhat more highly than many other commenters, entirely a matter of taste). And I got the rest already, thanks Yes, the limitations I see are pretty much generic to pop/idol music and between Kawamori's taste and the series' positioning (with its apparent double aim at a younger general anime audience plus diehard original Macross fans) it was inevitable, and moreover within these general limitations the range is quite rich and VERY much improved compared to SDSM. And my specific Valkyrie complaint was probably because the entire thing was already overloaded at that point (just realized that the mythology nod might really be a late addition - and it is no more than a nod). AND I should just go listen to Escaflowne OST if I want some "anime music" that has little to do with pop for a change (and it's even the same composer; am listening to it now). And thus I end up impressed with the amounts of expertise around here Thanks!
  25. Thanks to azrael for linking me to this thread. I suspected as much, but did not know. (And I'll totally pass on criticism of her. Her life is her life and her music is her music. If she hates something, none of anyone else's business to say she is wrong). But still - and I do hope she is *not* reading this... would not exactly the same stuff, only worse, happen to Minmay inworld? Being typecast as a cute anime singer for 30 years apparently sucks. How about being typecast forever, history books likely included, as "the one who sang to save our ass when she was 16" by humans and "the Cute Transforming Face of Culture" by zentraedi? (I guess that is how Minmay is remembered in Frontier-verse). She got loads of laurels to rest on - and her own achievement that she has no chance of overcoming? Also - someone here supposed that Minmay's leaving on the SDF2 is a reference to Mari leaving for the US. But is that even feasible? Was FB2012 filmed after she departed for the States? P.S. I'd really love to listen to "Don't Call me Minmay" P.S/2. Added the beginning of the quote to http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IAmNotSpock so the information is disseminated more widely (and hopefully Mari-sama gets harassed a little bit less with the stuff she does not like)
