  1. Most of the time this is what I am doing anyway, because it always feels like there is not enough knowledge. Sadly, I'm limited in what I can learn without actually knowing any Japanese. So I always have to trail the tails of people who do understand Japanese. (That can make for fun aerobatics).
  2. For understanding and working out the details of the setting. (Commonly known as "fan wanking"). Also, for enjoying the parts I failed to notice because they were too fast!
  3. Wait, finale? It does not seem to end chronologically after either version of Frontier. And if you mean "latest item produced", isn't that the M30 game? (Dubious canonicity, but so is FB7). New series is a good thing for sure, though.
  4. Read it all so far (that's up to part 5/episode 4). For me, the part about Limm Minmay being prone to sudden changes of character was always part of the point. I think thye make it explicit in episode 5 that Hikaru was surprised with the change - but this is by no means the last change. Perhaps I just like Minmay (as a character, and Macross version only) somewhat more than is common on this website. But I see her behaviour in Episode 4 as a good part of her character setup. And this "I wanna be a traditional girl" will come back, with a vengeance, in the last episodes. "I'm a strong girl and I want you to go into the army now" - to "now I am again a traditional girl and I want you by my side, to care for you, so you leave the army now" is pretty much the point of the Hikaru-Minmay arc, and Episode 4 sets it up rather well. And yeah - thanks a lot the notes make me notice some things that I failed to catch in my "watches". They are very useful.
  5. Wait, so Yot-chan bought Nyan-Nyan and made it into a worldwide franchise? what's the source for that? I sort of assumed Kaifun did it, as he would inherit, whatever his relationship with his owner parents... But I have probably missed something.
  6. I think the Dr.Tenma they mean is actually the Astro Boy character, the original creator of the robot. Urazawa's character in Monster was probably a homage to him, as Urazawa is known as a Tezuka fan.
  7. This sounds interesting because the backstory of "Fire Bomber American" albums have it located on Macross 11 - and the albums, as I understand, were out way before Macros Frontier (then Quarter) planning. So they were going to use the already-established English-language fleet?
  8. Was this story on the Re:Fire cover? I'm juts thinking of the opening to M7 Dynamite, where Basara is playing live at a Fire Bomber concert explicitly described as "FINAL". This seems to suggest that he returned for one last gig, formally disbanding the group. But if there is a different canonical statement, then the opening does not matter?.. Inasmuch as there is such a thing as a Macross canon at all. Also got a fun idea from Kawamori's statement that the Macross animation we see is *entertainment about history* from that world - perhaps M7 Dynamite is a miniseries about Basara's recent adventure, which was actually presented and sold at that final live concert? (Then again, the ending suggests Basara has reached Earth. This was never mentioned anywhere else. But logically, if one starts from a colony ship and spends years travelling the Galaxy freely, one would probably hit Earth at some stage).
  9. It's been two years since I commented on this already-old thread, but I still can't get rid of the vision of Minmay, off screen, going through pretty much the same story. I don't remember where I found the formula "Mari Iijima is not Minmay, but Minmay is Mari"; it certainly appears that the screenwriters based the character on the actor in more than just voice. And despite my usual music tastes lying somewhat elsewhere, I actually do enjoy Mari's later music - imagining it to be Minmay's later music in the Macross universe. (Yes, she has disappeared, but she does not have to be dead). "Survivor" in particular sounds like that. Post-SDFM Macross is a world of survivors.
  10. It looks like the possibilty gets mentioned now and then (the last mentioning was by Valkyrie Driver) so I'm making a thread to discuss it - and perhaps to start buulding a team? It looks like many people agree that Macross 7 has a workable plot, awesome music, interesting (if also annoying) characters - and a terible lot of filler/padding/canned stuff, making it pretty hard to watch. There are some precedents of fan recuts to rectify such issues. Might such a recut be possible for M7? It could be a series of 12 to 20 episodes. Alternatively, it could be an expanded FB7 with a runtime of 3 to 4 hours. I like the idea of FB7 (Luca's electronic antique shop = headcanon, even if the movie is generally noncanonical as the final concert does not fit the timeline... except there is no Macross canon anyway, etc). But the short runtime makes the retelling fail.
  11. Agreed. In fact the idea of a movie cut retelling the plot was a good one, I think. But FB7 should have been 180 minutes, not 90. Wonder if some cool fan will ever make a 180 minute fan version of FB7 (just add more footage from the series to fill in the glaring holes in the retelling). He changes enough to lose interest in Fire Bomber and leave M7, though? I see his story with Sivil, which may have been the cause of the change, as prety tragic. (With all the love going on in the franchise, I just had to pick that pair to care about that few people seem to notice).
  12. With Macross, honestly, I think M7 should be excluded from "production order", except for pre-teenage boys. The music is awesome but the plot is debatable and the reuse of canned battles, outright horrible. I found the battles and all still worked fine for my 9yo son (but I still did not get the courage to show him Frontier, because of all the fan service; I probably will soon enough but need to keep an eye on him for some episodes, notably that panty-stealing story). For adult viewers, I say skip 7. For those who have seen Frontier there is a rather strange "in-universe preview" called Macross FB7; I wish they made it into a decent intro/keypoint retelling at 180 min, but it is actually 90 min and, while giving some sot of a taste, fails to explain what's going on. Perhaps there should be a fanmade expanded FB7?.. (As in, just cut more 7 footage into the sequence).
  13. I'll go against the trend and say I actually like Minmay as a character. I mean, I like the way she is written and, yes, played/voiced. I still wonder how much of the day-to-day writing was actually based on Mari Iijima - though, yes, I get the point Mari Iijima is not Linn Minmay, because Mari never wanted to be an idol... while Minmay did want just that for a time, then grew weary of it. And the weariness (combined with bad management and outright immaturity) is played for all it's worth. I do mean SDFM here. Music-wise, Ai Oboetemasuka is the best Minmay song, but I don't really "get" Minmay in the movie (and I'm outright unhappy about what the movie did to Misa, with that joystick-grabbing coming out of nowhere as it seems to me). Would I want to hang around Minmay? Nah, Ranka is best for that. The Mary Sue and at the same time the very realistic teenage girl - hey Kawamori, just how DO you write a teenage girl character in the way an actual teenage girl would write one? (By asking one, perhaps? I can easily imagine that being the case, btw. At least that is exactly how I worked out most of my questions - by asking a teenage girl, who happens to love Frontier and also to be a really good singer, to explain Ranka's actions to me). So I end up without a clear favourite because I do like Sheryl too - a character just a year older than Ranka but, I think, much more adult-thinking (perhaps one needs to disregard Kiss in the Galaxy for this conclusion, though). Also her music is awesome, especially what the movies add. Of the Macross ladies (so without Basara) I would see Sheryl as the musical leader, perhaps tied with Sharon Apple. And Sharon Apple is... well, I'd want more of her. As she is in Plus, she is a rather pitiable robot character who acquired self-awarenss for a short while, never really had any time to "grow up", got lost in emotions inherited from Miyung, ended up screwing everything up including herself and getting destroyed. (There appears to be an unused sequel hook with her chip being preserved; I did use it for my own fan fic, wonder if anyone else gave that one a shot). I do have a thing for robot girls and Sharon's story is one of the more depressing ones. And then (according to what I could read online) in Macross 29 a Cyberoid girl walks around and sings too and no one, as I understand, bats an eyelid, despite the story of the Sharon Apple incident being known. I do wonder what happened in between, how the technology matured if Sharon herself did not have a chance to. But I guess we'll never know. Can't really pick one! But if by "favourite idol" one just means "whose concert I'd attend", it's Sheryl. Movie version of the concert, too. Because her holographic tech and her music just work perfectly together.
  14. Thanks - looks like I overestimated her level of military training.
  15. Now I don't get it. Keiko has some sort of telecom on her, she was chatting to the others in her team a moment earlier. Why is she not reporting that she is being attacked?
  16. That may be a very interesting setup. Keep the musicians safe in the city or at least on Battle Starlight - sort of like how Sheryl was in the last episodes of Frontier TV. Try to get that song energy channeled through mecha piloted by proper miltary. The question is whether radio transmission is going to "cut it", or dilute the energy too much like recording apparently does. If this is happening post Frontier, someone knowing what happened on Frontier might get the idea of using fold crystal to transmit the energy, but this must be someone in SMS; only SMS has the knowledge and, more importantly, the actual crystals. Whether SMS acutally want to tell about this could be a plot point. Also, broadcast. SDFM appears to have an outright plot hole when they suddenly broadcast successfully to Zentradi ships, without knowing Zentradi communication technology. (In my Macer saga I drive a coach and four through this one). You, however, have direct descendants of the Britai fleet. They might know the broadcast tech that Zentradi ships use. Could be useful too.
  17. Well yeah, that was the idea. It should be their take on it, in your own concept, but they should still have the raw information that a few years ago on another fleet a Sound Force existed and made certain achievements against an enemy who used brainwashing. They don't have to like the way Sound Force operated. Looking at this "inworld", not from a "rule of cool" perspective, *I* would not like the idea of musicians piloting their own mecha while also making music. And never mind that they can and that one of them is ex-miitary and another is the daughter of two ace pilots. Concentrate on ONE darn thing, it's World War II vintage news. Like Ranka did - she sang in a Valk piloted by someone else and even continued through the landing (and through getting out of the Valk). That's a pro, and she did not have to pilot to be one. I guess the military on Starlight will have somewhat more to say about it... But still they gotta know that it was somewhere out there.
  18. I think the only constraint with Macross 11 is its size. It is a New Macross class fleet, roughly similar to M7. http://macross.anime.net/wiki/New_Macross_class Frontier is a much bigger Island Cluster class fleet. http://macross.anime.net/wiki/Island_Cluster_class Everything else is really a side story. You don't have to use the Vajra in the main plot at all; they appear in the skies at one point in 2059 and disappear within an hour or less, folding out without firing a shot. And by 2059, Fire Bomber American is a blip in history and Kaifun has most likey left (it appears he should have a fat load of Nyan Nyan stock, whether or not he is involved in running the corporation). Some points to consider in that era: - The SMS exists on a lot of planets and fleets. It would logically have either a presence or a reason not to have a presence, like a ban from the fleet's authorities. If a ban exists I suspect Bilrer would obey it; there are many other places where one can make money. SMS tends to have the newest "toys" because of close links to manufacturers; I guess Starlight military can still order Valks all right, but would not have access to the experimental models. Starlight might have its own maulfacturer too if you want to play around with non-canon mecha? - Sound Force is a matter of record and known, at least, to military professionals (ref Macross FB7, where Ozma did not know the whole story, but did know what Sound Force was). Also, Dr. Chiba is likely to be somewhere out there (possibly Professor Chiba by the time). - If brainwashed humans and Zentraedi are encountered, someone (scientist or military analyst) is likely to draw a connection and to attempt to use song energy to break the brainwashing. This attempt does not require a Basara clone - no need to put musicians at Valk controls (the idea runs counter to proper division of functions among staff, anyway). In fact, it is likely to be tried in a lab first, rather than in space; that's what happened on M7 too when things started to get organized. I would not put it past them to try and contact Chiba personally; unlike the elusive Basara, Chiba is likely to be reachable and not even retired.
  19. If you have brainwashed humans/Zentradi as enemies, the key question is whether the stuff happens before M7 (perhaps contemporary with Macross Plus) or after. Before M7, brainwashed enemies are not known or expected. After M7, they are known and expected, and there would be suspicion that another group of the same Protodeviln bunch is around (triggering involvement of Dr. Chiba and a search for Basara?) Isolated Zentradi fleets appear to be curb-stomped if "Fleet of the Strongest Women" is anything to go by; note that HQ wants M7 to engage the Zentradi fleet because they are pretty sure it would lead to military victory. The reason for the curb-stomping is not entirely clear, though. And there might be a "mega-fleet" of Boddol Zer proportions out somewhere. (One might even go with the DYRL option of Zentradi commanders as organic parts of ships). One interesting question about the kind of fleet you envision would be the kind of music popular there (it's Macross after all). Of course one has galactic radio, so the current top stars would not be unknown (that's Sharon Apple or Fire Bomber depending on exact timing, one has to mention them to keep context, I suspect). But if they pride themselves on keeping older traditions they might have something more old-fashioned, like jazz, as their principal entertainment? You might also want to play around with whether Nyan Nyan managed to gain a foothold. By the way... perhaps your fleet might be Macross 11? It's a canon English-speaking fleet; I think the only place you can see it in canon is a brief moment in Frontier where controlled Vajra appear over it. It is also known that Lynn Kaifun hung out there for some time and ran the "Fire Bomber American" project there, but apparently was not very successful. One can see the makeup of the fleet in the animation but no details are known so it could be known as "Macross Starlight" just as Macross 25 is "Macross Frontier".
  20. The idea does sound interesting, but if you want to model things around the relationship to war. you gotta have a war. Who do they fight? Rogue Zentradi are usually isolated operations, as opposed to full scale war. As for anti-UN, my view of them revolves not just around national ways but more importantly around mistrust of the UN. There are many cases in current politics where, according to the views I subscribe to, US-led wars were and are based on lies. (Particulars would be off topic here but in general the view is well known). And so the anti-UN, as I see them, saw the announcement about the alien menace as just another lie. It was, in fact, not a lie. But it was like that boy who cried wolf. This dovetails nicely into canon. In the events of Macross Zero, it became obvious that an alien menace actually existed. Canon says that's when the principal leaders of the Anti-UN side pulled out. Also, canon has the UN government as quite prone to lying - remember how they announced that the Macross was destroyed by Anti-UN terrorists (even though in fact they were dormant for a year by that time).
  21. I think the creators will want to provoke one because they bring attention and money. Whether the provocation will be successful is another question.
  22. I wonder what version of Isamu one gets in Macross 30. The modern-day (as of 2060) seasoned SMS pilot, or the young soldier yanked from the 2040s? (EDIT: young one apparently - so that means two versions of Isamu are alive for some time in 2060?) I also really really want to know the story of Sharon Apple in Macross 30 - sadly the one thing skipped in the podcast. Someone please spoil as I don't have an intention of getting a PS3 ever.
  23. "Zentradi traditions" is an interesting question. It appears that their only native tradition is liking war - and that would be war as such; I would imagine a Zentran does not even mind being killed in batle all too much as it's their natural way to die. It also appears that they are swept off their feet by human culture with an emphasis on music, and that the majority, but not everyone, tend to find peaceful ways thanks to it. There is a distinctive minority who, instead, manage to find a connection with the warlike parts of human culture. They are shown in the later episodes of SDFM; to a certain extent they reappear in Frontier with Temzin, but the "connection with warlike human culture" part does not really resurface there. You might want to explore it more - it's definitely "underdone" in canon as later SDFM was rushed and they apparently did not want to go deep in that direction in Frontier. (In 7, the topic is entirely skipped). But whatever Kawamori's suggestion (perhaps biased by being post-war Japanese?), in reality *very much* of human culture is warlike, so I guess that minority - the Zentradi that latch onto warlike culture - would tend to reappear over and over again even after the first wave got themselves killed under Qamzin. I get to it to some extent in my Macer saga; he gets himself a Meltran girlfriend who later defects to Qamzin. Perhaps I should start my English version with that part - it's pretty self-contained and was originally published first. (I had to use Robotech to find her a name though - not many Meltran names known in Macross) BTW, I've realized we're likely on different sides of the politics game with the Kosovo thing. This is completely off topic in itself, but mirrors into fan fic when I tend to see Anti-UN forces as sympathetic. Thankfully Kawamori was well on his game in making things balanced, following a well established amine/manga tradition. There are enough reasons to see the UN govt as jerks in pretty much every Macross title, and the one time we meet Anti-UN characters in Zero, they are believable and multi-dimensional. (Still trying to remember whether Nora Polanski's white hair being due to torture is actually canon; the torture or rape itself seems to be canon anyway: http://www.mtranslation.host-ed.me/MCRcharacter/ZeroAua02aNoraPolanski.php ).
