  1. Am I alone in feeling that Hayate and the grumpy mercat are going to end up as friends?
  2. I lost track after Ep3 for a couple of weeks. Watched ep4 yesterday, 5-6 today. #TeamMakiReina and they seem to be getting "official". I hope Kawamori would slip a word in somewhere that yes, they are. Up to ep6 I was thinking "okay we'll do without fanservice-y interaction", then came the face-and-breasts touches, so now we have that too. Not a kiss, but we did not get any kiss at all so far. Re main triangle I'll go with #TeamFreyja , which seems to be absent in this thread so far, mainly because I don't think it's time for Mirage to "settle down". She is a soldier and she and Hayate seem to be working increasingly well as a tactical pair and I'd leave it at that without bringing more into the mix. Freyja, on the other hand, is working as a tactical pair with Mikumo (possibly displacing Kaname, but Kaname does not seem to mind). I don't think Mikumo/Freyja is in any way realistic (if she gets into Windermerian kids at all I'd say it would be Prince Heinz). So I would propose that both Freyja and Hayate keep their tactical pairing separate from their romantic pairing. (That, and let's mock the F...rontier out of shipping wars). I still think Mikumo is headed for the pineapple salad. Possibly she and Messer might have a grand exit together, perhaps with Heinz too? But before she is out I really want to know WHAT she is. In ep4, under rocket fire with no force field drones, the others went down at her order - and she stood up. This is not reckless "kill me now" bravery, no, she is not like that. So she seems to be relying on some abilities here. I do find the Knights are getting somewhat less two-dimensional. The next episode will probably tell us more. My only disappointment so far is that the "idols are forbidden from dating" thing does not seem to be played at all. Perhaps it was removed from this world. There were two mentions of dating so far, though both might have been mere jokes. (Plus, Mikumo seems to be pushing Freyja towards Hayate, but that's probably pragmatic).
  3. I got Neko Atsume a couple of days ago. And immediately wondered whether they might release a Macross Delta version. That would have to have a pier instead of a yard, sea-themed goodies, and of course, mercats.
  4. Found a hint of this on Reddit by chance, looked up in Wikipedia - looks interesting to me but I really know nothing about planes. So question: is the maneuver that Hayate Immelmann has stumbled upon thanks to a mercat related to something previously, in 1918, known as the Immellmann Maneuver? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immelmann_turn#Historical_combat_maneuver (Apologies if this was discussed in the podcast - I never got to it yet)
  5. I wonder if Ragnans post lolmercats online. And if there are "draw Walkure as mercats" contests.
  6. This is a thread about "umineko", known as mercats or seacats in English (depending on the fansubber). I guess we'll be seeing more of them, so we could as well discuss their behaviour, suggested lineage (Protocatture? Genetic engineering?) and other things here, not just in episode threads. Oh. And pictures. And memes. And anything else umineko/seacat/sealcat/mercat. And wanting A MERCAT NEOW. Human(oid) Delta characters have a thread. Mercats also have a thread now. Macrossworld, never speciesist! (first image is a gif, not sure how to make it show the moving part better)
  7. So looks like we still won't know what happened to him after the presumed final concert after events in Dynamite (the one shown in the opening). Is it another Macross tradition to disappear lead characters by this point? Minmay, Basara, Movie!Alto.
  8. A take on classical music in the Macross universe? I'd read that! (But that's not enough to make me learn Spanish).
  9. How about this - Protoculture had pet Protocats and decided to seed them along with their own genome, because the Protocats had some sort of important role in culture stuff or fold wave stuff or what not? (Hmm, there was apparently a catgirl spotted in Episode 2 - so on some planet the genomes got mixed up?)
  10. Well, some canon comics apparently do talk about the grim side of colony ships (M7 Trash? that prequel about Sheryl, whatever it is called?). Which just means you are going with canon tradition. I really liked the design and the idea, and hope to see the comic sometime Maybe she'll have "brushes with fame", like a glimpse of Basara or a one-night stand with having-fun-away-from-home Isamu?
  11. We are talking about idols and dating because 4 to 5 of the main characters of the show are idols, in an idol group too (and I want Kawamori to deconstruct this rule to heck). Also, there was AKB0048 (which, for all I know, ignored the issue, but that's par for the course, because great anime creators have to make money too). I wrote "4 to 5" mainly because I am not really sure what Mikumo is. I suspect she might not be interested in dating, rules or not. She seems to be a confirmed artificial lifeform or cyborg, based on the opening (reattaching screenshot which I already attached in ep2 thread) - and while Sharon Apple *was* interested in dating (in a rather, er, spectacular way), no one says this applies to all artificial creatures.
  12. Hmm - does AKB0048 really get to the bad parts of being an idol, as opposed to just those of being a soldier? If it does, I might reconsider not watching it. (I am not fond of the music, and honestly skipped it as a "Kawamori needs to earn" thing). The dark part did happen withg Minmay and Sheryl, though it was not about dating restrictions. Minmay was burned out and later her popularity fizzled out because of terrible mismanagement, and Sheryl was swindled by her manager - pretty common things in the respective eras (burnout is eternal, bands fizzing out after a peak did happen in the 80s and later too, and I remember reading some gory contract stories in the 2000s). And, was "idols can not date" even a thing at all in 1982? I thought it was borrowed from Takarazuka somewhat later? (It surely was a thing in 2007 though... I really really hated the way pseudo-fans piled up against Aya Hirano a few years later - that's the story that awoke me to the restriction thing). Also, Fire Bomber were not idols. They were an indie rock band that struck gold. I don't think the rule ever applied to them. (I might, of course, be badly mistaken somewhere - apologies in this case).
  13. I thought mercats were native to Ragna, not a genetic experiment? Inworld that can work, but from the outside I'd see that as a copout. Much of the hardness of RL idol life is exactly that and Kawamori was pretty good at capturing such references in the past. And being revered is not exclusive with not being allowed to date.
  14. Got to it now. (Had to wait for Eng Sub to become not just available, but easy to find). - MakiReina seems to be near-canon, what with them living together? - Makina is still wonderful with her "kyaa" approach to technology, while also serving to point out exactly what VF model is on display to the kind of viewer who can't recognize one on sight (me). I guess she's getting the highest waifu score all over the world, especially since Mikumo has shown her aloof/kuudere colours. (Which were expected to start with). - MERCATS! Especially that fighting one. Judging by the fact that nobody took a gun (or harpoon) to it, this game is well known. - Hayate is getting less Hikaru and more Isamu by the screentime minute. He has not (yet?) learned the Isamu way of treating girls, though. - The elephant in the room about idols, the fact that they can have no personal life (can't date, etc) seems to be politely ignored for now, with Mikumo even encouraging Freyja's link to Hayate (though she has a clear reason, making Freyja's rune work). I really hope this is temporary. In a few past Macrosses, Kawamori has done a great job of showing the "grim other side" of popular singers' lives (what with Minmay's burnout, the betrayal of Sheryl by the only person she thought she was close to, and Basara getting terminally bored). And to top it all, money made Kawamori do a "happy" presentation of idol groups in AKB0048 (or am I mistaken about the happy part?). I really hope he RIPS INTO RESTRICTIONS ON IDOLS WITH THE POWER OF A THOUSAND MERCATS. But then, he's not Gen Urobuchi and his ripping generally starts somewhere mid-series, not at Episode 3. - Mikumo throwing off the towel to an immediate change of scene is a very nice "take that" to fanservice seekers. In fact the series seems to be *less* fanservice-oriented than Frontier, if one means erotic stuff by fan service. (I really hope no bra-stealing happens this time - that one darn episode, pretty meaningless as it is, made me keep Frontier away from my son for a couple of years now, though he's hitting 11 and probably gets to watch the thing soon with me sitting in on the episode). Delta is, instead, filled to the brim with the other kind of fan service, with mecha and old Macross references and real life aviation references. - Music is still just okay. - Captain Ernest Johnson kicks ass. (The "ambulance and firefighters" call when everyone else was dumbstruck). - Mirage is a bit too much of a formulaic tsundere for my taste. - Where was that Fire Bomber reference? I missed it:(
  15. Thanks! Apparently most sources spell him "Raizou" which is why I failed to find him. (I did watch M0 but it's my least favourite Macross, so I lost track of minor characters). While I, of course, thought of Megumi Nakajima when I read of Makina Nakajima, her being a descendant of Raizou would be a cool inworld thing. And yes "family stashed somewhere" - perhaps in the same kind of shelter as the Saotome family or the young Mao Nome?
  16. Could you enlighten me as to who Raizo Nakajima was/is? Google did not work.
  17. But should one not compare like with like when talking about PMC uniforms? I mean...
  18. In the context of previous Macross instalments this seems to be a likely scenario. Macross seems to shirk from "bad guys", with some exceptions like Grace in Frontier. But the fight with the apparent Big Bad is very likely to be a misunderstanding.
  19. I think so too. This was not a real emergency, this was a specially equipped carriage for Walkure purposes. I have a different question though - what race is the green captain from? He seems to be about 4 meters tall, which is only half Zentraedi size.
  20. watched Episode 2 too. (The sub with mercats; encode seemed pretty nice to me). Apparently, Mikumo's artificial origin (or significant enhancement) is confirmed in the OP: This brings me to peace with the antics of the Walkure in Episode 1. I still suspect Mikumo is in for a heavy dose of pineapple salad, though. She is overpowered and Freyja needs to shine in the story. So she might be the mentor whose loss will propel Freyja's character development (as happened with Roy and Hikaru). Hologram tech has improved to the point of working on a person in normal clothing, not a special body suit like what Sheryl wore. Worked even on Freyja who definitely had nothing special on. Also seems to be able to provide full invisibility? Pushes disbelief boundary a bit, but Overtechnology is so Overtechnology. The music is... nothing special. Not the charming oldtime simplicity of the original Macross, not the powerful art of Yoko Kanno in its various forms, and not the sheer rock badass of Fukuyama in M7. I have to say I learned to appreciate Frontier music more in comparison. Ikenai Borderline is catchy, though. (My dreams of seeing Kajiura in, now that Kanno left, have not materialized, but I don't think Kajiura would be compatible with this setting anyway). The story is getting interesting with just the right amount of quotes. Mirage is channeling both her granny *and* Misa in a compelling mix. Freyja - Ranka on emotional steroids (who would think that were even possible...) with a few pieces of badass that the original Ranka missed? (Freyja's animation gets OTT periodically but this mught be justified). In the triangle I'm probably rooting for Freyja simply because I don't want a repeat of the first Macross, where Misa won. There isn't much of a triangle yet though, apart from the opening. It's sure to come in force soon enough. (That, or a yuri resolution, because a bit of yuri is always good - but Frontier was better for main triangle yuri, as Hayate seems much more stable and less likely to be seen as redundant than Alto. So I guess I'd better ship the Walkure girls instead, some fuel seems to be provided intentionally). EDIT. Just realized the umineko/seacats might be partially, along with the Japanese, inspired by the Russian language, which calls seals "sea cats" ("morskoi kotik", and "kotik" is a dimunitive of "kot" - tomcat, so more like "sea tomkitties" or something). The seacats seem to have seal-like limbs.
